View Full Version : The Satellite Phone
imaaronsmom 04-26-2007, 12:17 AM Mikhail was there to retrieve that phone. My theory is that this women was there to help restore communications to the island, not to rescue our Losties (as Desmond had hoped). That is what the phone was for. What do you think?
Halcyon 04-26-2007, 12:22 AM I like that idea, and it certainly sounds plausible....the Others probably knew that a new communications device was en route and they assigned Mikhail to be on the lookout for her arrival and watch for the signal flare. They need that phone to re-establish communication with whomever is pulling strings off the Island and find out their next orders..
DarkReality 04-26-2007, 12:29 AM That doesn't explain the picture of Des and Penny.
CharliesHoodie 04-26-2007, 12:30 AM I don't know...I'm almost 100 percent positive
she was sent by Penny. But maybe Penny has something to do with that...?
Diesels Blitz 04-26-2007, 12:34 AM That's an excellent theory, but the Des/Penny picture is the only thing stopping me from believing it. Wouldn't it be crazy if she was sent by Penny, not to help the survivors, but to actually help the Others? That would be a crazy twist!
johnnywishbone 04-26-2007, 12:41 AM Mikhail was there to retrieve that phone. My theory is that this women was there to help restore communications to the island, not to rescue our Losties (as Desmond had hoped). That is what the phone was for. What do you think?
I mentioned this theory in another thread and totally think it makes sense.
And now i'm also thinking that Widmore knows alot about this island. Penny somehow found out that her father was involved. She also knew the parachutist, maybe even was friendly with her and when Penny found out that the parachutist (i sure wish they would have used her name so i didn't have to type that every time, lol) was going on a mission to the island to help restore communication, she asked the parachutist to look for Desmond there and gave her the photocopy of the picture to help her recognize him. Then she could return home and inform Penny that he is alive and well, and Penny may be able to figure out a way to get him out of there.....or maybe even take Des back with her.
That doesn't explain the picture of Des and Penny.
It could explain it if what i mentioned above happens to hold any water.
silverlegend 04-26-2007, 01:04 AM That is exactly what I was thinking, actually
MagnetMan 04-26-2007, 02:25 AM I like this idea. Maybe the different languages she spoke was not only used to communicate with Mikhail, but also to give us a clue that she was there as a "communications" expert.
Billy Shears 04-26-2007, 03:02 AM The first word she spoke was "Desmond". That and the photo says she's there to find him.
Or maybe Widmore sent her out just to inform Desmond he lost the sailboat race?:)
WestsideP-Stone 04-26-2007, 03:55 AM its pretty clear imo that she is there for Des and was sent by Penny as already alluded by TPTB in an earlier podcast. the portuguese book, the picture, saying Des' name.....all obvious indicators.

Johnnywishbone...your theory satisfies me! I think this makes the most sense regarding our parachutist with an unmentionable name, and the reason for her arrival.
GaleForce 04-26-2007, 05:43 AM Or ... the picture can be explained by the following:
The Others simply grabbed Desmond's original print and made a copy. Wasn't this the same picture in the hatch? The Others have a undeniably sneakiness to them, so this wouldn't see too far-fetched.
This would support the theory that Parachute-Down was simply a plant, and the indestructible Mikhail an accomplice.
Just a thought.
Colonel Sanders 04-26-2007, 06:52 AM I mentioned this theory in another thread and totally think it makes sense.

I too think along this line.....I believe that the mention by the parachutist that she was "not alone" will play a big part in tying Penny in with all this.
Mikail was probably sent to retrieve the parachutist and bring back the phone. I'm a little confused as to why he gave the phone back without a fight. My bet is he will try again to take the phone....
Finnster 04-26-2007, 08:00 AM ok. It is my belief that Ladyship Down is there from Penny to find Desmond. To me the picture is evidence enough along with her muttering "Desmond" in the last eppy.
Mikhail is a different story though. He did move like he had a purpose when he saw the flare. Why? He faked his death and was lying in wait for something to happen that was planned out...?? hmmm... Gotta wait to see how this one pans out.
Maybe, just maybe, he saw the red flasher and thought it was a re-supply drop. Another Other found the drop point and sent up the flare. Mikhail did not know about the phone until Hurley slipped up and mentioned it. Mikhail's easy release of the phone is a little suspect I agree..... but again what was the plan?
This next question is a little OT and actually goes back to the last episode, but I don't remember seeing a thread or conversation about the distance between the helicopter crash and Ladyship Down's position.... Anyone care to offer a suggestion as to how she wound up over hte island while the helicopter was WAY OUT over the ocean????
Just musings this morning before I have my second cuppa joe...
coupons 04-26-2007, 08:05 AM It also makes one wonder. Hurley knew what it was. He multi millionaire did not have one one himself?
bdrewery 04-26-2007, 01:48 PM Thanks for the spoiler ***.

Fierro 04-26-2007, 01:58 PM why not just dropped the phone with the small parachute in the barracks ?
johnnywishbone 04-26-2007, 02:04 PM Thanks for the spoiler ***.
and where exactly is the spoiler in this quote?
I certainly hope that '***' of yours isn't what I think,
because there is certainly no reason to be rude

I read and reread the quote and I also couldn't find any hint of a spoiler either. I'm not sure where that is coming from, but I do like your speculation on this subject.

Yep. I'm sure Mikhail came running as soon as he saw that flare...but he realized he was outnumbered and took off. He gave the phone back because he was afraid of getting Tae Kwon Do'd again. My guess is he'll get his hands on the phone again...right after he kills Sayid.
imaaronsmom 04-26-2007, 07:17 PM Two points that scottnews brought up in another thread:
1. Actually, she was not carrying a picture of Des. The picture was in a backpack and the backpack was not on her. It could have been anyone's backpack - like Penny's.
2. In another thread they translated her Italian conversation with Patchy. She told him "I am not alone."
I think that both of these points scream that this gal was there to restore communications to the Others.
johnnywishbone 04-26-2007, 07:25 PM I read and reread the quote and I also couldn't find any hint of a spoiler either. I'm not sure where that is coming from, but I do like your speculation on this subject.
thank you.....i thought i was missing something, because i read and reread just like you and couldn't find anything. It was nice of him to be so polite about it at least, lol. :rolleye1:
Halcyon 04-26-2007, 07:33 PM I agree that the parachutist was speaking in different languages in an effort to find one the Losties couldn't understand but Mikhail could. I think that Mikhail surrended the phone so easily because he knows that the parachutist will never fix it so that the Losties could use it.
Jeff Jensen from EW.com mentioned that She wasn't Penelope, but since she did mumble Desmond's name; maybe she works for Penelope and has been searching for him. Perhaps she'll regain consciousness and tell us more. (And having already seen next week's episode, I can tell you that she will. And that what she has to say is pretty...well, deadly.)
I am beginning to think that she arrived on the Island thinking she would only encounter the Others and assist them with restoring comms. When Hurley told her that they were the survivors of 815, she said that was impossible because they found the plane and everyone was dead. I think that it suddenly dawned on her that someone must have changed something in the past which resulted in the Losties crashing on the Island rather than somewhere else and everyone dying.
lostgurl 04-26-2007, 07:37 PM Maybe, just maybe, he saw the red flasher and thought it was a re-supply drop. Another Other found the drop point and sent up the flare.
That's a possibility too. Maybe parachute girl hitched a ride with the supply drop in order to help restore communications, but the helicopter crashed. Still doesn't explain why she had Desmond's photo though.
Hardy 04-26-2007, 08:16 PM My theory is that the others have only just learned about Desmond existance on the Island and did not have enough info on him prior to the hatch going boom, and as the others have no contact with the outside world the woman we saw is sent with a phone for the others to make contact, and dossier full of info about Desmond (the book and Photo etc) ....
She's just a courier...which is why she was greeted by patchy so quick, patchy is the info gatherer and as the others info gatherer he was collecting Desmonds info from her...
That also explains how she recognised Desmond, being as that was part of her mission..
:)
Quinch 04-26-2007, 08:22 PM its pretty clear imo that she is there for Des and was sent by Penny as already alluded by TPTB in an earlier podcast. the portuguese book, the picture, saying Des' name.....all obvious indicators.

I agree - but why was Patchy hanging around that area of the Island too? It was apparently 8 hours hike from the beach camp and probably in the opposite direction from the Other's barracks (where we last saw Patchy). So what was he doing out there, at that time?
Tom Chaney 04-27-2007, 05:32 AM Slightly off-topic regarding WHY she brought the phone, but since this is the Satellite Phone thread, perhaps appropriate:
I'm a little concerned about the fact that the phone doesn't work. Really, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. One would assume that if the parachutist set out with a satellite phone, it would have a good battery and be functioning properly. When Hurley turned it on... rather easily with no fumbling about, I might add... it goes right on, then goes off and he announces that it's broken.
It went right on at first try! Again, why would she set out with a phone containing a weak battery. OK, perhaps it was damaged in the fall, but a parachutist landing in a tree doesn't seem to rise to the occasion. It wasn't damaged to the point of not working at all... only to the point of just being able to come on for a few seconds???
I have no idea why Hurley would want everyone to think a fully-functional phone is faulty (or even if that is what happened)... or how he could "accidently" pull the trigger on a flare gun. But... it gives me pause.
-calypso- 04-27-2007, 05:37 AM Mikhail was there to retrieve that phone. My theory is that this women was there to help restore communications to the island, not to rescue our Losties (as Desmond had hoped). That is what the phone was for. What do you think?
Agree with you..
Maybe she has a photo of Desmond because Charles widmore works for all this and Penny ask the girl to find Desmond for her??
Hanso Founder 04-27-2007, 09:42 AM I too think along this line.....I believe that the mention by the parachutist that she was "not alone" will play a big part in tying Penny in with all this.

I can only assume that when she said 'I am not alone" and Hurley told about the Sat Phone, Mikail quickly inserted a chip into disabled phone, send message that other Comunication expert had arrived and then removed chip....making it useless agian......easy to give back.

kotw32 04-27-2007, 10:33 AM One thing for sure about this show is everything has been a pretty strait forward answer. Yet everyone deviates and thinks the most outrageous stories. From what we have seen so far I think she was sent by penny to try and locate Des. Patchy was in the area becasue of the Wire that leads into the sea. Maybe there is a substaion near by for commuication or a way to turn on the pinging so the outside contacts can find there way in safely. If commuication is lost with the island there must be a back up plan. e.g. a certin amount of days after commuication is lost they would send a team out to investiate. So someone needs to turn on the sonar so they can get in.

When the island's "shield" is able to make a helicopter or a plane crash and a compass to give false bearings, then why didn't they anticipate the fact that a satellite phone wouldn't work after confronting the shield ? They should have known..
factual 04-27-2007, 12:06 PM Did Mikhail steal the phone's antenna?
In "Catch 22" when Jin first picked up the phone it looked like a Motorola Iridium 9500 sat phone with the antenna folded down on the back.
The close up, in Hurley's hand, showed a face that looked similar to the iphone, not the standard Iridium key pad.
In "D.O.C." after Mikhail steals the phone, when Charlie grabs it and Hurley pretends to call his mom, it looks like the Iridium 9500, but with the folding satellite antenna removed from the back.
Was Mikhail's plan just to deny the use of the phone from the survivors?
Or did TPTB just decide it looked closer to the iphone version without the antenna?
imaaronsmom 04-27-2007, 04:24 PM I can only assume that when she said 'I am not alone" and Hurley told about the Sat Phone, Mikail quickly inserted a chip into disabled phone, send message that other Comunication expert had arrived and then removed chip....making it useless agian......easy to give back.
100%
That would explain why he gave it up so easy.
It's just too coincidental for me that he seemed to show up out of nowhere, he's the comminications specialist, and this parachutist just happens to have a satellite phone on her.

If he removed it, it would have been with the intention of giving it back, no? He walked away with it, so what purpose would it have served to remove the antenna if he planned to keep it? Jin happened to notice he took it, so are you suggesting that he removed it while Jin was running after him? I'm intrigued by this...any screens?
