View Full Version : Mikhail knew about Charlie's hearing loss....

When Charlie confronts Mikhail and threatens to take his other eye, Mikhail leans forward with his hand cupped around his ear and says, "Oh I'm sorry, what did you say?" It wasn't an aggressive fight comment like "bring it on, poser," it was a snarky personal insult just like Charlie said to him about the eye thing, revealing that Mikhail knew a lot about Charlie.

So how did Mikhail know Charlie suffered some hearing loss due to the hatch explosion? If they actually have cameras pretty much everywhere and he was watching what was going on, why didn't the Others try and stop what was happening - especially considering that it knocked out their communications.

This makes me think Ben/Jacob/whoever WANTED the disaster to happen, specifically so that the Others would be cut off from the rest of the world. I don't understand his reasons yet but I'm sure those will become apparent soon.

Anyway, I felt like that little gesture of Mikhail's was very telling. He was making it quite obvious that he was very much aware of who the Losties were and what they were going through - even something like Charlie's hearing loss, which he hasn't spoken much about and which wouldn't be commonly known even among the other Losties.

Charlie was absolutely right to be indignant about letting Mikhail go. He realizes how dangerous they are, especially after Mikhail revealed such personal info about Charlie.

So I am a little slow & totally missed that. Now it all makes sense...well as much as things can make sense with this show. Thanks for that!!

this is a good point

if ben/Others could access mikail and his surveilence, and knowing one could watch the swan, then, why did they not use someone from within their own group to operate the 108 machine

also, the pearl was used to watch the swan too.

The task of this station, according to its orientation video (http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Pearl_Orientation_Video), is to monitor the Swan (http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Swan) station and possibly other stations via a remote viewing (http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Video_surveillance) system.

im not sure the Others are responsible for the crash

speaking of mikails body language, when hugo brings up the fact of locke killing mikail, mikail gives a small smirk. then, a few seconds late, he smirks more when that event is
again talked about

Well, that is a good and interesting idea...but personally I think he was just making a reference to the whole bleeding-from-ears episode..as in I'm sorry...one of your people did something that damaged my hearing...would you repeat that and SPEAK UP!!

That's what I thought too. Patchy was just pretending not to hear him because of the whole blood spurting from the ears thing.

I wasn't talking about the crash, I was talking about the hatch explosion. :)

Well, that's an idea. I just thought it was a snarky gesture from the way Charlie went berserk after he did it! ;) It seemed like Mikhail knew it would really irk Charlie. I mean, for a musician to lose their hearing is like their worst nightmare....

Interesting about the hearing loss snark, but I can't quite buy it yet since we've seen no evidence that Charlie's hearing loss lasted past the S2 finale.

This makes me think Ben/Jacob/whoever WANTED the disaster to happen, specifically so that the Others would be cut off from the rest of the world. I don't understand his reasons yet but I'm sure those will become apparent soon.
I've always thought Ben was specifically manipulating Locke into a state of mind where he wouldn't push the button. That was too much of a mindgame going on.

Charlie was absolutely right to be indignant about letting Mikhail go. He realizes how dangerous they are, especially after Mikhail revealed such personal info about Charlie.
I always love how Charlie's always the sane voice, and no one ever listens to him. Reminds me of "Homecoming".

There's also the small facts that They killed him, kidnapped Claire, threatened him, and killed Scott. I can understand why Charlie doesn't exactly like Them.

Charlies indignation and exasperation was so funny in this episode. I kept expecting him to throw up his hands and say - "I'm SURROOOUNDED by IDIIIOTS!!!"

Not sure about Mikhails taunt. It would be cool if Mihkail was retorting to Charlies snark about him being partially blind with a snark about Charlie being partially deaf, but mostly I think Mikhail was just mocking Charlies attempts to be threatening.

Has there been any evidence that Charlie suffered permanent hearing damage from the hatch explosion? I don't think it was about that, but I can see why you might think so.

as a rock star, charlie could have suffered some hearing problems/damage before he came to the island, which could be what mikhail was referring to.
it seems they know a lot about the losties before the crash.....

I missed that too, and I agree it's more likely he was just acting nonplussed at Charlie's indignance and threatening posture, or he's having trouble hearing himself because his eardrums were busted. If we had seen Charlie deal with prolonged hearing loss since LTDA then I might agree, but we haven't.

I also agree that Ben wanted that hatch implosion to happen. I'm guessing that his people were starting to get a little too rebellious with all the easy communication and travel that they have. Juliet's desperation to leave represents this rebellion. He may even have done it to keep her here specifically because she is that determined to find a way to communicate with someone and leave. Ben told Locke he needs his people to stay, so the communication may have been an issue. I think he manipulated Locke into letting the button go for that reason.

I think you are all on point. I think it was a reference to both charlie's hearing loss, the fact that a fews days ago we saw blood shoot out of his ears, and it seemed to imply that where they are, even if you did take his eye that might not blind him. He probably lost his eye long before he came to the 'eyeland' (couldn't help myself). Wasn't he a rough and tumble soviet soldier in the desert?

I disagree. Saying something like "Sorry, what did you say?" when you obviously heard what they said is a common way of insulting someone; I think Mikhail was just winding Charlie up.

I think it could be true that Charlie is deaf in one ear. I seem to remember him walking round clutching one ear after the explosion in the hatch. Patchy snarking about Charlie being deaf in one ear would be a great comeback to Charlie snarking about him blind in one eye.

And it would be creepy if Patch somehow knew about Charlies having a hearing imparment if Charlie hadn't even told anyone about it.

I'm glad someone brought up Mikhail's comment. I thought it was kinda odd at first too, but I think Mikhail was just jerking Charlie around. After all, Mikhail could smoosh him easily...Charlie's a scrapper, not a trained fighter. And since Mikhail's ears were still bloody, it'd be easy to play the "What did you say?" card to set Charlie off.

Since Charlie's made no mention of it or displayed that he has been having some difficulty hearing, I'm guessing he got healed. Post-implosion, we had the three monkeys very briefly... Charlie and his ears, Locke and his voice, and Eko and his eyes (while not explicitly stated, Eko seemed to not focus at all when talking to Locke in FI).

I agree that it would be cool if Patchy was making a crack about Charlie not hearing very well. But, I also feel that since there has been zero reference to hearing loss past the hatch explosion epi, it was most likely just a taunt.... a very effective one at that!

Yeah, it was definitely taunting. If Charlie & Co. knew that Locke had pushed Mikhail through the fence, then Locke must have told them that he died, blood shot out of his ears, etc. You could still see the stains on Mikhail's earlobes (watch it again and look closely). So Mikhail holding his ear and claiming to not have heard what Charlie said is just a way to get Charlie worked up, sort of an "I'm sorry, my ears are damaged, I didn't hear that" with a smug look on his face.

If the island can cure Mikhail of the sonic fence inflicted damage which include ear hemorrhage, it should also have cured Charlies ears of similar damage resulting from the Swan Implosion. I think it was just a sarcastic putdown of Charlie by Mikahil.

Verily - Loved the 3 monkey insight!

Yep, that's what it was. I knew there was some message in tha scene but too many things were floating around to be able to pick it right out.

I never tought for a second that Mikhail was referring to Charlie's hearing loss and I still dont, I think he's referring to his.

Some people seem to forget that he had blood coming out of his ears not so long ago.

I also think that the reason the girl looked scared when she saw him is because she wasnt expecting someone other than Desmond to be on the island.

I don't think that Mikhail has any hearing loss. He heard whispering, murmuring, Italian speaking parachute lady just fine. I like the theory though about Charlie suffering from a hearing loss. It's hard to imagine it being true since there has been no signs of it but still, great theory!

He certainly wasn't seriously indicating that he didn't hear Charlie. He said it in a mocking tone, but the impression I got from the remark was that Charlie's threat didn't scare him and he was no more of a bother to him than a pestering fly.

maybe de Others don't need video cameras. maybe they have someone (spy/infiltrate) inside Losties group. someguy who knows what happens Charlie's after the hatch "make a big-bagaBUM"

Why didn't Mikhail start running, when Jin came after him, when he took the phone? Watch it again, he acts as if he is unaware of anyone coming after him.

That's an interesting theory but I think it's more likely that Mikhail is alluding to HIS OWN hearing problems - those caused by his contretemps with the sonic security fence.

On this show, we know, that one action can have many different meanings.

I doubt the Others even knew about what the hatch would do. They were as surprised as everyone, and the podcasts hint that they didn't.

And remember that the island is good at healing. Maybe it helped with Charlie's eardrums.

On this show, we know, that one action can have many different meanings.

Can I adapt that statement? On this board, one simple fact can have many interpretations. However it can frequently prove tedious having to wade through the ill-informed and trivial speculation.
