This episode almost made me cry too many times, and one moment in particular really choked me up: Jin's father wiping his hand on his shirt before he touched Sun's face. :bawling:That small action speaks volumes about this man and is such a sad statement on rigid class systems.
:sun::jin: But, honestly, I wasn't expecting much more from their story going into this episode. Jin's biological mother having been a prostitute was a :jawdrop:, and I never would have guessed that Sun had met Jin's father.
More than anything, the entire episode showed how sometimes, even with the best intentions, you just can't win.
Jin's dad tried to protect him from the shame of knowing his mom was a pro ... but that secret raises it's ugly head years later ... leading to Sun to ask daddy for $100,000 and forcing Jin to be Mr. Paik's henchman ... which drives a wedge between Jin and Sun ... causing her to seek solace in Jae's arms ... on and on and on. One lie begets another, begets another, digging the hole depper. Honesty truly is the best policy. And trying to fix someone else's mess sometimes only makes the problem worse. But what do you do?
But back to Jin's dad and that moment. Here is this man, trying to protect his son, who might not be his flesh and blood, from the shame of knowing how his mother made her living. He hears from his son's wife, a stranger, that his son is telling everyone he's dead. But later, when Jin comes to him, he welcomes him with open arms and had that beautiful monologue about Jin being his son and it doesn't matter what he's done.
I already liked the character, but now I simply adore him. For me he is the best representation we have had on this show of pure, unadulterated love. And I feel badly that Jin is compelled to be ashamed of his father and has missed out on a profound relationship with this man.
Man, all of that from Jin's dad wiping his hand on his shirt before he touched Sun's face.
