Juliette said she lost nine patients. She must not be including the babies/fetuses, right? Do the babies live outside of the mother? Is it just the mother who dies? Or am I opening up a pandora's box because of the moral implications of this question? Juliette said that the moms only made it to the second trimester. Can fetuses born in the 2nd trimester be viable? I think so because preemies can survive after a certian number of weeks and the island has its healing properties.... any thoughts?

No, that does not include the babies. 9 patients in 3 years is only the mothers, the babies/fetuses were lost half way through the second trimester and no doctor would refer to an unborn child as a "patient."

I'm sure she's referring to the women. Even if somehow a women made it far enough for the fetus to be barely viable, we were told that the woman's body attacks the fetus, seeing it as foreign. If this attack is strong enough to end up killing the woman, I'm sure the fetus gets essentially completely destroyed. The immune system is a strong thing when it seen something as foriegn, and basically attacks and destroys it, cell by cell.

Just wondered, ( I just had a baby--luckily I didn't even miss a lost epi), because some of the babies in the NICU are born really, really early and they still make it...

(And I'm glad you didn't have to miss any Lost, lol.) Yeah, if the women got far enough it would theoretically be possible, sometimes it happens with the really intensive care we have now. I just think the fact that the women's bodies attack the fetus would give this no chance to happen.

I can't imagine the women wanting anything to do with getting pregnant, unless maybe they weren't told the truth in the first place. I'm assuming the nine patients were all pregnant mothers.

There are babies that can survive pretty early, but Juliet said that the woman die halfway through their second trimester, that is 4.5 months. Even in the best neo-natal units around babies cannot survive if they are born before 5 months. Even babies born at 5 months have a super-slim chance with all the wonders of modern technology at their fingertips. No doctor would count a non-viable fetus as a baby.

9 is an odd number. Does that answer your question?
(Ok, ok, I guess there could have been dead twins in there somewhere.)

If a baby is born alive then it is considered a patient as well. It would have been 18+ (perhaps some multiple births??) patients.
But as said, 2nd trimester babies would be difficult to care for under these circumstances... I mean 24 weeks is 2 trims. Halfway through the 2nd trim. would be 18 weeks... That's right on the edge of spon. abortion vs. fetal demise.
I just wonder though if some of the children did survive?? Could explain why there are so many children running around the Island!!
In regard to whether the Mothers were lied to... What happens to the fathers?? Are they folks on the Island or "contributions" from donors? Wonder if Pickett and Colleen were next?? Maybe that's why he was so upset.
