I am starting to get very nervous about the amount of security Dharma or the Others seem to need on a deserted Frickin' Island. I could totally understand if they were located in the middle of a metropolitan area and housing bars of solid gold, but "God can't even see us here." So why the hidden rooms, blast doors, & sonic death-fences?
The Swan blast doors would not have protected any residents against the fail-safe activation.
The fence was seemingly created before Smokey was created/arrived/went crazy ("it doesn't seem to like our fence," not "we made this fence to keep it out.")
And a nursery is hidden behind another foot-thick blast door.
Dharma appears to have built these precautions, but what for? Is there something indigenous to the island intelligent enough to need to hide from? Why choose this island if these were the precautions needed?
I think someone or something is hanging around that will make us appreciate these defense systems sooner rather than later...

I am betting they chose the island because of it's mystical and huge scientific properties. Although I'm not exactly sure we have been given a full explanation of those components yet.
I think the precautions arose much like a lot of our buildings have- to keep out nature or an unruly element. I have yet to see any structures that are meant to keep someone in like a jail. But maybe I haven't been looking at the buildings and gates in the right way.
I do think something big is going to be revealed that will answer your question. It has to do with the monster. What else would a group of people need that much security against? And the monster is huge!

Let's not forget the medical treatments being administered to all Dharma employee's. Daily injections with some serum designed to do jacob knows what. Perhaps, the original inhabitants forced them to take such a defensive posture. That four-toed statue looked to of been on the Island for quite some time and the fact that it was broken seems to suggest a mighty force was/is present on the Island. Perhaps all these percautions are related, then again, they could be individually explained. The blast doors in the swan were a backup if the station was ever breached. The Flame had some elaborate computer program setup up to defend against "Hostiles", perhaps this is evidence that the original Inhabitants have a low IQ... hmm ok probably not.
IMO. the dead DO stay dead. unless Smokey recreates them or you hallucinate .

I still can't figure out if Dharma was preparing for some kind of attack...I'll buy monster protection for now, until we learn more about where it can and can't get to from the vents, but it just seems like, to both hide the nursery AND give it the blast door, it verges on overkill based on what we've seen so far.
It seems that Dharma was expecting a human assault from somewhere and needed to protect that nursery for some reason.
If I'm correct and the fence was created for something other than smokey, I can't wait to find out what a concrete barrier with barbed wire at the top wouldn't have stopped.
