Hm, I think this is his belief, not the reality. TPTB said they're not dead and that they're not in purgatory. Cooper also mentioned the plane and the fact that there were no survivors. So what Naomi said to Hurley must be considered as "fact" in the "real" world.

John allowed Sawyer to rid himself of his demons, thereby helping John too, by doing what he needed to do for so long. But this is going to have repercussions for Sawyer as he did the death by hand...no weapon but his hate and his hands. This will undoubtedly change James for sometime to come. I hope Kate will still be able to reach him through his pain.
