View Full Version : Little Dorrit - Naomi Dorrit
South Shore 05-03-2007, 12:28 AM When Naomi (hooray, she has a name!) mentioned that her last name was Dorrit, I thought of the Charles Dickens novel 'Little Dorrit'. I never read this one, but my quick look at the plot and theme of the book found one interesting things loosely relating to tonight's episode.
The book dealt with a debtors prison, and Dickins own father was imprisoned for debt. Desmond saved a Dickins novel to read right before he died. Does anyone else have any information about Little Dorrit?
LostLaura 05-03-2007, 12:30 AM Are you sure that's how it is spelled? Do you know the spelling from casting information? Just curious, cause spelling is relevant for Google searches. :)

No, I certainly haven't seen any casting information, nor have I done a Google search on the name. I just heard Dorrit, and thought about the book. It certainly could be Dorritt or some variation.
scottnews 05-03-2007, 12:42 AM Naomi Doritt is how Wikipedia is referring to it, for what its worth.

jennylee27 05-03-2007, 12:42 AM If it helps, her last name has not been given on press releases, just her first.
I think it's a good bet that it relates to the Dickens book, though, since he's been so prominent on Lost already.
LostLaura 05-03-2007, 12:45 AM Cool, thanks. I'd never heard of the book, so I didn't make the connection, and I didn't even remember her name after she said it. So I was curious how we knew it was spelled. Thanks.
Islandprincess 05-03-2007, 12:51 AM Closed captioning listed the name as "Naomi Dorrit".
devenproject 05-03-2007, 12:57 AM In the podcast - they said it sounded Dicksonian or Dickensian.
I didn't know if that was a spoiler or not.
rabidranger 05-03-2007, 01:08 AM Debtor's prisons was a sore subject with Dickens, as his own father was held in such a place. Talk about a Catch 22! You have a debt that needs to be paid, but can't work to make the money to pay the debt because you're in prison. Sometimes wealthy benefactors would step up to the plate and arrange a relase, which is the angle I think is being taken with Naomi.
If what she said can be taken at face value, she was working for Penelope Widmore, someone she had never met. My guess is Naomi was a career criminal/terrorist/etc, who was in prison. Bue to her unique talents, she was selected by Penelope Widmore, or at least someone who works for her (ala La Femme Nikita) to head up the search for Desmond. As a result, she was set free from prison due to the Widmore connection, but with the qualifier that she was on a tight leash with her ultimate freedom guaranteed only if she recovered Desmond (or perhaps found the Island if Penny turns out to be unsavory).

I like this idea of Naomi as a career criminal ala La Femme Nikita. She said that her "company" was hired by Penelope. That's one specialty company! Anyway, this theory of Naomi being hired by a wealthy benefactor, and her freedom being guaranteed upon the delivery of Desmond provides great motivation.
Great connection too of a debtors prison being the ultimate Catch-22.
