Why did Rousseau need dynamite?
Did anyone else notice that there were only like 20 others total?

I was caught by surprise too because I thought there would be a lot more Others. Did anyone notice if Karl was there? I wonder what happened to him. Heck, I don't remember seeing Alex either.
Anyway, I hope TPTB show continuity and use the same background Others it has all season long. For example, the Others that were at the dock at the end of "Live Together, Die Alone" and the ones that were around when Kate and Sawyer were digging and hauling rocks.
And yeah, what was Sayid digging? A grave? :eek2:

GettinLost 05-03-2007, 01:30 AM Why Didnt Sawyer Put On Shoes???????????!!!!!!!!!!
You know,, I've been thinking about that since he said he didn't have any on... I was trying for "theological"... A sign of innocence? A sign of penance?
This is from Wiki:
Going barefoot is also a common form of mortification, often combined with others such as pilgrimage, either as penance or ascetism.
Symbol of innocence
This largely American literary tradition dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, when going barefoot was a standard part of childhood play, especially in rural areas.
The journey itself to me represented a walk of penance in Sawyer's life. The being barefooted was like he wanted to be innocent again.
That's why I can't be completely mad with him for killing Cooper. It's like he prepared himself to do the thing he had to do. Penance - then innocence.

I think Rousseau was either laying more traps OR she had followed Locke and wanted to see what he was doing, knew the dynamite was in there and used that as a good excuse.

That was first, second and third thought. He was on latrine duty! :)

I'm 99.9% sure that I saw Alex in the crowd when Ben was telling the Others that Locke was not the man they thought he was. They focused on her for a few seconds, but it was dark.
Deadshot 05-03-2007, 03:47 AM I dunno about the barefoot thing.
I mean when we saw the others walking through the jungle back in season 2 weren't they barefoot?
I thought that maybe Sawyer would walk back to the camp wearing Coopers shoes.

I am fascinated by Cyndi's character and her role in all of this, but that may just be the fact that I leave in two weeks for flight attendant training  I definately think she has been working with the Others since before that flight left Sydney. I can't wait to see more about her story.
LostApril 05-03-2007, 04:34 AM Question:
Did Sawyer ever get to "take a leak"?????
Ok, had to throw that out there. :D
Cindy bothers me. She is too acclaimated. (I am sure I spelled that wrong.) Anyways, something is up with her. I posted this on another thread but Locke is told by Ben that he has to do something to prove he is ready to become one of them. Did Cindy have to do something as well? If so, what was it?
Lady EKO 05-03-2007, 04:47 AM I really want to know about the radio/phone that Naomi has. It seems very high-tech. I am surprised Sayid was not familiar with it.
I'm wondering about that giant post that Cooper was tied up to by The Others campsite. It seemed a little ancient looking to me. It wasn't one of the "electric" fence posts, was it?
Kanikazi 05-03-2007, 05:01 AM Sawyer being barefoot is no mystery. How many of you put your shoes on when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet? He was in bed with Kate. She got up to leave and woke him up. He felt the call of nature and dashed out to the tulies barefoot to pee. Enter Locke. The end :).
maverick06 05-03-2007, 09:09 AM the barefoot thing could be a long stretch of a tie in with the foot statue... but lets face the facts, sawyer didnt think about putting shoes on... thats all..
very-lost 05-03-2007, 09:21 AM We also know that Ben is getting better far faster than he should be in the "real" world.

riles9999 05-03-2007, 11:08 AM Why Didnt Sawyer Put On Shoes???????????!!!!!!!!!!
He thought he was going to play the part of 'Paul' in the recreation of the Abbey Road cover shot... he still needs a cigarette, and the VW bug in the background with the license plate ' 28 IF'.
Locke could be 'Lennon' leading the procession
Hurley is 'Ringo' presiding over the funerals
Sayid is definitely 'George' as the groundskeeper digging and filling graves.
Hey! What if this is just one big story based on Beatles songs and albums... ;-)

No, I don't believe it was. Clearly an ancient ruin, like the four-toed foot.
The interesting thing is that apart from some primative megalithism among Polynesians, there are few civilizations who could have built them. A more detailed analysis is warranted, but off the top of my archiological head I'd say the pillars were likely Indian or Indionesian. Unlikely to be Chinese or Muslim.
Of course, that still leaves Mu and Lemuria as candidates, too.

Ed Finnerty 05-03-2007, 12:12 PM it seemed to me that Sayid was digging something up purposefully and that he seemed a little annoyed when Hurley didn't go away so he could continue.

Eight 05-03-2007, 01:28 PM I found it interesting that Hurley was questioning Sayid while he was fixing the GPS phone just like he did with the radio before.
linerk 05-03-2007, 01:54 PM Most of us don't have to wander through an overgrown jungle to get to the toilet.
No but I camp a lot and I will get up without shoes to go...granted there are probably lots of things you could step on but I think if you are just walking up the beach a little and then ducking into some bushes - bare feet is understandable.
It's possible it was done by the writers for some symbolism though.
So hasn't Kate noticed that James is gone?? I mean it's day again when she's talking to Sayid and Jack. I was very disappointed in Kate this ep...hoping for better from her soon.
So back to all the little things...no one is going to comment on a big thing like the island not being an island or did I miss something???
Oh and I wanted to say that I thought there were more than just 20 others there and I don't think we saw them all...they were fairly scattered about.
GottaWatchThatAgain 05-03-2007, 02:00 PM What was Sayid digging a hole for?
Isn't Sayid ALWAYS doing some kind of manual labor when he is approached by one of the losties? This has to be like the third or fourth episode where that's happened. I keep thinking that either:
1. He's digging a hole to the other side of the world to find rescue; or
2. We'll suddenly have an episode where we find out that Sayid has built this elaborate underground tunnel system or communications device...
I feel sorry for him - everyone else sits around staring at the ocean while Sayid digs holes.

I doubt that Cooper saying that ties to J.G. Ballard's book Concrete Island but I couldn't help but think of it that way. Basically this guy gets into an accident and marooned on a big traffic island. He can't get off because the walls are too high. Passing motorists can't see him because of the walls as well. He only has what is in his car to survive. Very interesting book. Maybe it's tied to LOST in a philosophical way? With all this stuff about the island not being visible from the air and only traceable during certain times?

LOL, Since Damon, Carlton and Co. are really good at throwing in easter eggs as a result of Fuselage message board talk I can see it now....
Sawyer is walking near the beach and sees Sayid-what else?- digging a hole.
Sawyer mouths off something like, "Hey Captain Arab, (or feel free to insert any one of Sawyer's other Sayid nicknames), the sand castle contest washed away a long time ago."

Thank you, my sentiments exactly. I was starting to think I was some kind of savage for having traversed the distance to take a piss in the middle of the night without the appropriate footwear. Sawyer had to piss, Locke came along, Locke started to leave and wasn't going to wait for Sawyer to go back and put shoes on.
applecrush 05-03-2007, 06:02 PM Why is Jack so shady?

maybe the shovel was from the Flame or Otherville. i remember in season 2 when the losties were digging graves (i think for shannon & boone (or was it A-L & Libby?)) they were using bamboo or branches with garbage can lids attached at the bottom.

And Locke's bite on the hand seems to have healed remarkably quickly. They made a point of showing that. Plus the 'fast healing' was referenced very obviously. Maybe Locke really is special. Maybe he actually is Jacob and doesn't know it - as in some sort of prophecy (though I still believe that Jacob is a lie perpetrated by Ben).

Ah, on this island I would go pee without shoes but I would bring a gun - you never know who's wandering around in the dark...and he had that run in with the boar too remember. Oh right, there were no bullets so that doesn't work...well it would work on a person anyway.

Maalstrom Aran 05-05-2007, 12:16 AM Well first off I think that Cindy is part of the conspiracy to crash the plane. She along with the pilot and rest of the crew (perhaps?) knew that they were going to end up on the island. This could possibly have been her test for joining the others. She also does seem very comfortable with them.
Sayid is digging a hole, one that I expect will be large enough to imprison someone, just like Anna Lucia did. I expect he may try to put Juliet in there if things go badly with Jack. Or maybe both :o
Coopers references to the island not being an island was made because he thought he was dead and in purgatory or hell itself. He wasn't scared and I doubt if he knew much at all.
There has been lots of symbolism in LOST before, I imagine that Sawyer traveling without shoes is just another attempt to add depth to the setting and characters. I hope they keep it up.

She does but I don't buy the whole conspiracy to crash the plane so much anymore... I don't know what to think of that. I have a suspicion that Cindy is brainwashed.
Sayid is digging a hole, one that I expect will be large enough to imprison someone, just like Anna Lucia did. I expect he may try to put Juliet in there if things go badly with Jack. Or maybe both
This is possible and seems likely
Coopers references to the island not being an island was made because he thought he was dead and in purgatory or hell itself. He wasn't scared and I doubt if he knew much at all.
While this could be possible - I don't buy it. I don't think Cooper thought that at all. And this could explain it if Naomi hadn't said the same thing.
There has been lots of symbolism in LOST before, I imagine that Sawyer traveling without shoes is just another attempt to add depth to the setting and characters. I hope they keep it up.
This is possible but I still think if you wanted to go pee in the middle of the night you wouldn't take time to put shoes on. The symbolism fits too but then shouldn't he have forgiven Cooper and not killed him. I am not up on my symbolism so I could be wrong. :undecide:
jheadington 05-06-2007, 12:39 PM Sawyer initially going to pee barefoot is perfectly logical (middle of the night, nearby, etc.). The big thing that kept him barefoot was the fact that he basically had to chase down Locke after Locke told him, "I made a mistake coming to you," and then walked away. Sawyer even looks down at his feet twice before telling Locke to wait up.
efbeyi 05-06-2007, 05:33 PM Sorry for being daft but what does this mean? I've never heard this. Was this on the show?
As part of the Lost Experience, a book was actually published, "authored" by someone who was on Oceanic 815. The book is called The Bad Twin and I do believe that it's dedicated to a Cindy (am I right about that? I own the book but I'm too lazy to go look it up!). You can buy the book at pretty much any bookstore. It's a quick read and may or may not provide clues to the show. It came out around the time Michael "went bad," so if I remember correctly there was a lot of speculation about whether or not that was really Micahel, or maybe his "bad twin."
Anyway the book is worth reading, I think.
Exodus666 05-06-2007, 06:38 PM You know,, I've been thinking about that since he said he didn't have any on...
Very good catch, but this is not part of the plot this is a Meta-plot item.
The Story behind the story, same reason why the original Hatch had the hieroglyphs for the underworld, same reason why Ana Lucia had meaningless sex before she got killed etc... Writers like to put in Meta-plots of symbolic reference into their stories.

Locked_In 05-06-2007, 09:20 PM Isn't Sayid ALWAYS doing some kind of manual labor when he is approached by one of the losties? This has to be like the third or fourth episode where that's happened. I keep thinking that either:
1. He's digging a hole to the other side of the world to find rescue; or
2. We'll suddenly have an episode where we find out that Sayid has built this elaborate underground tunnel system or communications device...
I feel sorry for him - everyone else sits around staring at the ocean while Sayid digs holes.
Hey. Maybe it's symbolic. Sayid dug himself a hole by torturing all those people.
Allright. Quit rolling your eyes. I haven't had any caffeine today.
John Burger 05-06-2007, 09:39 PM that attention was taken away from due to the whole locke/sawyer/cooper thing.
For example,
What was Sayid digging a hole for?
Why did Rousseau need dynamite?
Did anyone else notice that there were only like 20 others total?
Rousseau is planning on getting alex back..I think that is clear.
Yeah..I was surprised they didnt show more others
The real funny thing is how they went from 1980's bright Gap shirts to crazy Other green and brown. That should be a new style.."Crazy Other green and Bown burlap" is in this season.--at the Gap.
wintermute 05-07-2007, 10:26 AM Sawyer being barefoot is no mystery. How many of you put your shoes on when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet? He was in bed with Kate. She got up to leave and woke him up. He felt the call of nature and dashed out to the tulies barefoot to pee. Enter Locke. The end :).
Ok, but how many people wake up to pee, get approached by a bald, middle-aged, knife-throwing walking miracle, asked to go kill someone and THEN not put their shoes on? :p
ScottNotSteve 05-07-2007, 10:37 AM This is from Wiki:
Going barefoot is also a common form of mortification, often combined with others such as pilgrimage, either as penance or ascetism.
Symbol of innocence
This largely American literary tradition dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, when going barefoot was a standard part of childhood play, especially in rural areas.
Potential vicious irony...the literary character Tom Sawyer (which turned out to be one of Cooper's aliases -- "the girls really loved that one") often went barefoot. I think a combination of Sawyer's eagerness to follow Locke and irony (what Sawyer did was hardly an act of innocence or penance), and/or perhaps a hint by the writers. Nice catch...
eko42 05-07-2007, 06:05 PM What was Sayid digging a hole for?
For the record, I'll say that he was digging up Shannon.

-Exodus
Exodus, I don't know if you saw my post about this a few weeks ago, but Desmond (or at least the guy who plays him) IS Jesus! At my church on Palm Sunday, the minister was telling the Passion story, which was illustrated by photos on the screens in the sanctuary, and lo and behold, there's Desmond as Jesus, right at Hosanna Lutheran Church! When he popped up on screen, my husband and I both said "Desmond!" a little too loud, and got some nasty looks..........:hypocrit:
One more little thing to add to the little things thread.... Why wasn't Kate alarmed when Sawyer went to pee and didn't come back for a whole day?
heppamies 05-08-2007, 05:19 AM Others are digging a hole because they are excavating the ruins. Goal is to find more useful information about the island.
Rousseau is an another and she is helping the dig with dainamite.

Kate had gone back to her own tent, so she wouldn't have noticed straight away. As for the next day, well, they don't seem to hang out together - she has her adventures (saving Jack), he has his (killing Cooper). They don't even seem to check in with each other, really.
