View Full Version : Dharma has a Submarine AND A PLANE! Captions don't lie
eggbeater 05-10-2007, 12:33 AM I always watch lost with caption turned on. After the hostiles attacked and roger was arguing with horace in the house, roger said "We were coming back from the PLANE and the hostiles attacked us."
This may be foreshadowing but who knows. They didn't destroy the sub so maybe they kept the plane also.
jennylee27 05-10-2007, 12:39 AM I have to rewatch, but I don't think I heard that. The problem with close captions is that someone is typing them as they watch. They aren't working off a script, and they've gotten a lot of words noticeably wrong before. Maybe someone can relisten?
Sawyers Mojito 05-10-2007, 12:40 AM are you sure he didnt say Plaine ? as in a prarier or valley?
Artie 05-10-2007, 01:04 AM I heard that line during the show... the word is "Flame" as in the Flame Dharma Station which they were returning from.
eggbeater 05-10-2007, 01:06 AM So captions DO lie. Drats. sorry guys
art_lipchalk 05-10-2007, 01:10 AM Hmmm... I thought he said they came back from the Flame, not the plane. Maybe the captioner did screw up the text?
imaaronsmom 05-10-2007, 01:10 AM I always thought that closed captioning was done by voice recognition technology. That's why its so far behind at times, and why it misses things the lists [inaudible] so often when I can hear what was said.

it's mostly done by college students in Boston. kidding, but there really is a large team of court stenographers doing captioning in Boston for WGBH. there is no voice recognition software that good, it's people.
thedudeinokc 05-10-2007, 02:15 AM I took it to be plaine also. Didn't Ben's dad take him there to celebrate his birthday?
lostgurl 05-10-2007, 02:29 AM I could have sworn I heard "plane" also.
Finally, can we all just agree that the submarine worked at least while Dharma was in control of it
Dublin Dilettante 05-10-2007, 03:35 AM I definitely, 100%, heard "Flame", through the trusty headphones.
Tom Chaney 05-10-2007, 05:48 AM I heard "flame" also.
On a related note: I understand the need to closed-caption a live show like local news, CNN, FoxNews, etc. "on-the-fly" (which often produces some amusing captions) but shouldn't a produced show like LOST be able to supply a script to the captioners and produce this stuff ahead of time... accurately?
bakerboys 05-10-2007, 05:56 AM If they provided a script it would get leaked.
promeneur_solitaire 05-10-2007, 06:06 AM I clearly heard "Plane" as well.
Also, the captions have elucidated some vague points in the past. I'm pretty sure that they do use a script for most shows. If they did not, there would be a lot more mistakes.
Tom Chaney 05-10-2007, 06:12 AM If they provided a script it would get leaked.
Give me the script. I'll caption the show...accurately. Pay me enough moolah and there's no way I'll leak a drop. My gauntlet has been tossed.
VoyagerCSL 05-10-2007, 06:15 AM I live in the heart of Hollywood, and can tell you that Closed Captions are generally transcribed by people who make $12 an hour and are unaffiliated with the shows that they caption. These people are also under enormous pressure to get as much captioning done as quickly as possible, and so numerous errors do occur and are frequently not caught or corrected before they hit the airwaves.

Normally this might be true but not with LOST.
After live transcription during the "incident" (lol) with Boone and the radio transmission in the Beechcraft - where the viewers heard AND the captions recorded, "There were no survivors of Flight 815" TPTB announced that the captioning was wrong.
After that they DID submit scripts to the captioner, who types them in before the episode even airs and double-checks it for accuracy. I use captions for every show I watch and have noticed many errors even in scripted shows - but never with LOST. Those captions are professionally handled and if this is an error, it would be the first I've seen on LOST since they did away with live captioning.
bakerboys 05-10-2007, 06:46 AM I went back and rewatched (its up on ABC's site) and Roger clearly says Flame.
No all we can agree on is that we saw people disembarking from it.
ugh, I figured :undecide:
Fierro 05-10-2007, 07:27 AM I heard "flame" also.

They use scripts. Many many times we have learn about things (like character names) much earlier they are introduced in the show. Does anybody remember The Galaga?
When they mentioned that word, it was inaudible for most of people. But there it was on the captions. Despite what many people say, CC is pretty reliable in TV Series, when they are not being typed in real time.
By the way, Galaga is the name of the SUB...

I agree. Greg Nations just answered a question relating back to Season 1 where the name of a character was typed wrong on the cc. He was even surprised and didn't know where that error had come from because it was clearly not what was in the script. If the cc said Flame, then it was Flame.

To be precise, closed captioning used a character name where there was actually NO NAME mentioned at all.

NO.. "We were on our way back from the Flame"... this is what my captions said.

Wow, I coulda swore my captions said "plane" too. I remember reading this thread and thinking, "he said Flame???" Considering that I try to listen but mostly rely on captions (I'm hearing impaired) I can't believe I misread that. I think I'm getting confused!!! :dizzy:
I want to go rewatch that part right now but hubby fell asleep on the couch and I don't want to wake him with the tv.
Quinch 05-12-2007, 08:59 AM I clearly heard 'Flame'.
nj_lostfan 05-12-2007, 02:07 PM It was Flame. I watched and rewatched and rewatched on ABC.com. I first thought is was plane, but it is flame - which makes sense because there is a Flame Station.
Esrin Schumacher 05-12-2007, 02:24 PM Flame.
Plus Roger just went there before the attack to deliver stuff.
Paroled_From_Oz 05-12-2007, 05:28 PM Closed captioning is NOT done by someone listening and typing in real time. There is a script. Except of course for live broadcasts.
I could have sworn I heard "plane" also.

totally agree. I heard plane also. But if it is true, that would be huge! It could support the theory that the plane was supposed to land on the island but Desmond messed everything up.
Im Puzzled 05-13-2007, 08:51 PM I heard him say the Flame as well. But then in the ending I heard Ben say original Inhabitant not Inhabitants. Dispite someone saying it was Inhabitants on CC I keep replaying it and still hear it as only one original inhabitant. Thats what I am going to believe too. If I am right that would make a major change in the plot. Might mean that the Hostiles were originally part of Dharma and went awol. Can anyone shed more light on this for me? I think CC just might have missed spelling one little S on it.

Im Puzzled... (for sure)

Sometimes an s at the end of a word is difficult to hear in regular tv speakers. Check the volume and/or connect your audio output to a high def surround system. Or use headphones. He said inhabitantS.
MegletTX 05-13-2007, 11:30 PM So I'm confused...did the CC say plane or flame??
FWIW...it's actually "plain" not "plaine"...just in case that makes a difference. I mean it does because when you say plaine I'm not sure if you mistyped plane or plain lol!!
DonWidmore 05-14-2007, 12:46 AM NO.. "We were on our way back from the Flame"... this is what my captions said.

I watched my captions about 2 minutes ago and my east coast US captions said "Plane" and a week later they still say "Plane."
however when I listen to it, I hear "flame."
Don

Don
I am SO CONFUSED!!!!
John Burger 05-14-2007, 06:15 PM He said Flame
He also said it again later in the show
and Dharma has nothing now :)
the subs destroyed. ..but there has to be a plane dropping food from somwhere--dont know if its the island
nextone 05-14-2007, 06:29 PM it's mostly done by college students in Boston. kidding, but there really is a large team of court stenographers doing captioning in Boston for WGBH. there is no voice recognition software that good, it's people.
Ohe's noes! You know what that means:
CLOSED CAPTIONING!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S MADE OF PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Yea you got it right, it means its time to quote a Charlton Heston movie.)
EdMuse 05-14-2007, 06:52 PM I took it to be plaine also. Didn't Ben's dad take him there to celebrate his birthday?
Nope, mesa, not plain. And although it was Ben's birthday, and they did go for a beer together, he didn't take him there to celebrate his birthday. He had forgotten again. But I digress.
I heard Flame, too. And BTW, I heard "inhabitants," not "inhabitant," but I'd have to check again now to be sure. That would sure be a trip if he said "inhabitant," as that would mean he wasn't referring to the Hostiles.
