View Full Version : Didn't Ben look totally crazy talking to the chair?

I believe there was an "entity" of some sort sitting in the chair, but didn't Ben look absolutely, terrifyingly psychotic? It was creepy, and kind of funny at the same time. I was freaking out, but I was kind of laughing, thinking of what that must've looked like to Locke.

ROFL I totally agree, I was watching with my brother and we just looked at each other and laughed. I must say it was beautifully done!

Ben looked totally out of his mind. The first thing I thought was that Ben had "The Sickness" that Danielle talked about. But after John turned on the flashlight and heard Jacob, I don't think that's the case.

I was laughing. I thought, "OMG he's a total nutcase"... and then, the voice. I think I almost fell off my chair.

For a second there, it was as close to jumping the shark that the show ever came.

I thought that Locke was going to walk out with nothing happening....and then...."HELP ME".......

Great show, I will never doubt it again!

Hm...yeah..about that...I was 100% convinced he was a total nut job, still seeing things like he did his mom...and I still am..

Why? Because he shows all the signs, he was already an odd kid to begin with, throw in his father and growing up on a freaking island? And its obvious something happened to his little girl friend that was also traumatic..and you still cant forget that he was seeing his mom...so yeah, crazy.

As for the voice? Could be real, the island, whatever. But if Ben ever heard the voice its because whatever it is is toying with Ben, and now hes totally lost it after shooting John.

Ben IS Norman Bates. No doubt about that. I don't know if it was a ploy to get Locke to leave being satisfied that Jacob didn't exist. It was by accident that Locke enraged Jacob.

I was thinking the same thing and Ben was just demented during that scene that was one of those what the fetch moments that makes your skin crawl and freaks you out

That scene was so freaky. I didn't know whether to laugh or be scared, but I am still certain that Ben is totally psycho.

I totally thought that too. Awesome...I'm gonna have to go with him as the best actor on the show.

The very best part of Locke's death is that he finally developed a sense of discrimination.

Locke didn't buy a minute of Ben's BS. This was a major step forward for Locke, one that I've been waiting for, for three seasons.

Good for you, Locke, you finally figured it out. RIP, you lived as a sucker but you didn't die as one..

I always liked the crazy Ben with the psycho sense of humor from S2 a lot more than the rational, calculated leader he's been in S3.

If he doesn't fall victim to Danielle's explosives, maybe he can develop into a total nutjob once his control of the Others starts to dissolve.

It was kind of humorous to me, but then got really creepy, because I decided in my own mind that Ben wasn't faking the whole thing. then when Locke heard him it just was instant goosebumps! Of course I still liked Ben at that point and now hate him and wish him all sorts of harm.

Yup - especially the nice touch of a rocking chair.

Good for you, Locke, you finally figured it out. RIP, you lived as a sucker but you didn't die as one.. Finally Locke decides not to be gullible. Personally I think Locke will "miraculously" survive but I see there's another thread for that.

I thought the one-sided conversation Ben was having with "Jacob" was ridiculously stupid. How he got "interrupted" by Jacob. Despite the poltergeist antics and the voice, I still don't believe any entity was there and Ben had engineered the whole thing.

It was an 'entity'. My guess is since the natives/hostiles don't seem to age, perhaps they evolve beyond this plane. Which is why Jacob, possibly the oldest native, can't be seen by everyone. Of course, Ben is bloody cracked, we saw that at the Dharma ditch....

Pretty gruesome wasn't it. Ben is a killer and a bold faced liar. Oh yeah and he's pyschotic too.

I think I know what happened to Annie. If you can recall way back to the begining of the season when we were just getting to know Juliet. There was a scene (sorry, I don't remember the episode) where there was a woman who just died from childbirth. Juliet apologized to Ben and that they lost Annie. At least I think that's what I remember.

One of the best bits of TV I've ever had the pleasure to witness. Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emmerson have without doubt made this my favourite season of Lost... so far.

***MOD EDIT for rudeness***

. That was just four episodes ago, in "One of Us", Juliet's second flashback episode.

And her name was Sabine, not Annie.

I didn't really think "crazy" first, I though he was faking. Trying to string Locke along. We all know that Ben is a good actor, so I really thought he was just putting on a show. Part of my was thinking... but what if there's really something there, now that would be really interesting- and there was.

Well, I guess I can tell by your screenname, Mulder, that you "want to believe". I'm more on the skeptical Scully side. :)

Totally Norman Bates. Totally! I think thats why the Hosties are so dirty. They're afraid to get in the shower if you know what I mean.

Somebody else posted on another thread, wouldn't it be funny if it was Ben saying 'Help Me' out of the corner of his mouth when Locke turned away? I got a visual of that and it cracks me up.

Yes Mother! And he really did see his dead mother BTW.

Maybe Jacob will be played by Anthony Perkins. Nice!

the fact that Ben was so concerned about what Locke heard, right to the end after he shot Locke, makes me think that it wasn't all a show for Locke's benefit, that Jacob really was there somehow.

Funny, the way Locke initially thought it was a hoax but then had it backfire on him reminded me of when he thought he knew the Swan station was a hoax and then that backfired on him too. In both cases he looked soooooo scared when he realized it was for real!

Jacob was there, I saw him. it was for a spit second. i had to rewind the dvr cause I thought I was seeing things, and sure enough there was a guy sitting there with like a beard and long gray hair. but thats all I could see.
but yeah that scene was freaky all the way. Ben is psychotic. he is just so calm and collected. Even as a kid he looked freaky. lol

WOW - very well said! I couldn't have put it better.

I loved that Locke wasn't putting up with any of Ben's crap! Go Locke!

Michael Emerson is incredible. IMO he's the most talented actor on the show.

So was Ben just faking the dialogue with Jacob?? I'm guessing he was, after all we know Jacob is real (sort of:) ), but if Ben wasn't faking it why was it such a big deal that Locke heard him??

How can Ben take orders from Jacob if he can't hear him?? For that matter, how does Jacob summon him?? It seems to me like Ben is aware that there is some entity that lives in the house, but has actually never been able to communicate with the entity, so he just kind of took matters into his own hands and interpereted Jacob's manifestations as he saw fit.

What do youall think??

Agreed! Hes truly captivating on screen. He was a scene-stealer right from the beginning as "Henry". Him and Terry are my two favorites, so naturally I was loving every minute of last night's episode. (Well, except the ending!)

I'm not sure whether I think he was truly talking to Jacob or just acting. If he was talking to Jacob, it is kind of weird that he didn't hear the "help me."

Maybe Ben could at one time talk to/ see Jacob, but is losing or has lost this ability. Kind of like his cancer- like he has lost whatever makes the island heal you. This could explain why he was ultra-threatened by Locke hearing Jacob.
