I was just thinking what the reasoning was behind that...
Did Alpert make Ben prove himself to them by doing this? (and later Ben required Locke to kill his father)..... Otherwise, his father could have been killed with the rest of the Dharma clan.
Ben's birthday was chosen for the mass killing because??? Payback is a b!tch I guess if your dad forgets your birthday and blames you for your mother's death!
I think it's very possible that this was part of the gesture of commitment that the hosties talked about in the previous episode.

True. I just think it's strange that it was Roger who approached Ben and got him on the van ride and not the other way around. So maybe watching his father die was just a gift from fate for the twisted little weasel.

I'm certain that Ben thought of this as a "this is between him and me" matter. Being able to privately do his personal part in the purge must've delighted Ben!

He wanted his daddy to KNOW he was being killed by his own son. Ben wouldn't have gotten the perfect thrill of revenge if Roger had just passed out and died in a pool of nasal blood with everyone else. Ben wanted him to know who was killing him, and why.

I think that Ben is really a sick puppy. It's not even funny to me anymore, I used to like him. I think that he wanted to kill his father in a more intimate setting if you will. He wanted to say a few last words to him as well. Alone. He is so demented.

I didn't even think about the connection between Ben and Locke having to kill their fathers. Very cool twist. Good catch!
