View Full Version : Alice in Wonderland
South Shore 05-10-2007, 12:33 AM When Ben spoke with his mother across the barrier of the sonic fence, it struck me just how much she looked like an illustration of Alice in Alice in Wonderland.
It also reminded me of the twins that Danny encountered at the end of the hall in the Overlook Hotel when he was driving his Big Wheel around during The Shining.
Anyway, the Alice resemblence stuck out for me, considering that the season finale is titled Through The Looking Glass.
Locke's Mom is also named Emily.
Fiver 05-10-2007, 04:14 AM When Ben let that white bunny go across the fence line, the first thing that popped into my mind was Locke's reference to Alice in Wonderland and his saying "follow the white rabbit..." (also a Matrix reference) in the first season. That scene and the one where his mom shows up at the fence makes me wonder if the land on the opposite side of the fence is somehow an altered dimension - through the fence is through the looking glass? Then we have the Others saying "Don't cross this line!" Anyway, just a theory.
shanzy288 05-10-2007, 04:16 AM oooh, I like that. never thought of it
MPmom 05-10-2007, 04:27 AM Ben's mom was Emily, his girlfriend was Annie.
Locke's mom was Emily Annabeth Locke.
Strange.
luckylittleshark 05-10-2007, 04:32 AM Emily and Anne are common names, though.
bakerboys 05-10-2007, 04:37 AM She did looka lot like Alice in Wonderland standing on the other side of the fence. And why wasn't Alpert surprised when Ben told him he talks with his dead mother?
Shannon's Next Fling 05-10-2007, 05:07 AM Emily and Anne are common names, though.
True but TPTB wouldn't use the same name unless there was a reason.
Fiver 05-10-2007, 05:36 AM She did look like Alice. And then Ben followed his WHITE RABBIT across the fence line...looks intentional.

Good theory. :) That white bunny definitely is symbolic of something & I like to think there's a reason for the word Portland to be so prominent. (portal land ? )
But being an animal welfarist myself, the 1st thing that popped into my mind was what a little ghoul little Benny is.
JThree 05-10-2007, 09:06 AM That might also explain something else I thought was really weird. That too short and out of place blue dress his mother was wearing. Most modern Alice's seem to wear blue as well.
Betsy 05-10-2007, 09:14 AM Remember when Emily told Ben, when he wanted to cross under those pylon thingies, that it wasn't his time yet? Like Alpert, she told Ben to be patient. I got the impression that she wanted Ben to join the Hostiles...I don't know why, unless it was to get revenge on Roger for blaming Ben for killing her.

You just totally freaked me out because I'm stupid and never got the connection. :eek2:

Good points on both theories.
Ben being born near Portland would have given him the chance of being run into by someone who works for Dharma, if as Alpert seems to suggest, that Dharma has a place near Portland. Of course, this would also infer that Dharma/Hanso and the hostiles are working together in some form. Maybe Dharma/Hanso saw the purge as being part of the natural order of things?
Ben definitely has a different take on the value of life, that's for sure.
Haggis 05-10-2007, 01:09 PM Ben's mother with her long blonde hair and dressed in her little blue frock reminded me of Alice. And the white rabbit was back.
I thought it was a subtle reference, but seemingly purposeful. Anybody agree / disagree?
South Shore 05-10-2007, 01:13 PM Sure - it's being discussed in a couple of threads here actually. I was immediately reminded of Alice in her blue dress. Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz also sported a blue dress.
Haggis 05-10-2007, 03:09 PM Good point. I had forgotten that Dorothy also wore a blue dress. Guess I always focus on the ruby slippers. And Ben's mother was barefoot ... I think.
nofaith 05-10-2007, 07:09 PM Did anyone else notice how scared the rabbit seemed after it cross passed the fence (ears back, not moving, almost shaking)? The camera seemed to pay extra attention to the rabbit as if it was particularly significant. It's often said that many animals can sense things that people cannot, so I thought this was worth noting...

alwaysI'mlost 05-10-2007, 09:47 PM I was wondering if it was a vague reference to the "White Rabbit" episode where Jack sees his father on the island.
KingMe122o 05-10-2007, 09:59 PM Good observation, but I don't think that rabbits can be trained to act. The rabbit "actor" was probably just scared in real life.
You could be right though.
scared? hehehe
I have had pet rabbits for 30 years, and I do rabbit rescue. That rabbit is PISSED OFF not scared :)
Basically it's very difficult to get a bunny to "pose" we have a lot of trouble taking pictures of bunnies for our adoption photos. They will only put their ears up if they are a. happy, b. alert, or c. trying to get the heck out of there. Bunnies with their ears back like that and giving you the "you suck!" look are generally pissed off, and they often grunt at you when they are in this mood. Someone obviously posed the bunny for this shot, and he's none-too-happy about it.
A scared bunny would be flattened as far as possible to the ground, in the grass, with his ears back but also a complete pancake, generally stomping his back feet in fear.

Hehehe, they're so cute when they do that!
LostIslandBaby 05-10-2007, 10:19 PM I thought of Watership Down. The rabbit was basically tharn.:)
msrosie 05-10-2007, 10:30 PM scared? hehehe

It probably had reason to be pissed off, given some scenes have to be done over and over and over again. Maybe it was mad from being handled so much lol. In the second picture in the links a few posts above, the eyes look pissed off, too.
bangklachic 05-10-2007, 10:31 PM I thought it the shot was a reference to following the white rabbit, a la alice in wonderland. Was it the same rabbit used in the inplant 'trick' they played on sawyer earlier in the season? A very long life for a rabbit is about 10 years. ps. i have rabbits too and that one was definately pissed!

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Slightly off topic: it seems like a significant lack of compassion on the part of young Ben to send his pet rabbit over the threshold to test whether or not it would be killed. I had to yell a little at my tv about that.

Yeah, but this is coming from the same guy that gassed his dad as he sat right beside him and didn't bat an eye. And that was a truely horrible death. Maybe an implication of Ben's morals/emotional state even at such an early age...just my opinion though...noone needs to be messin' with the poor fuzzy bunnies :(
SmokeMonster 05-10-2007, 10:56 PM I thought of the "Sawyer implant rabbit" too. Richard and bunny are drinking the same water perhaps?

That's what I was thinking...even at that age he was somewhat sociopathic and self-centered.
linerk 05-11-2007, 01:49 PM Ok back to topic...I started a thread but now I find this one - damn, thought I was first.
Anyway I totally noticed the Alice references. The looking glass could be the sonic fence or possibly Ben's window since he first saw his mother there (wasn't she in white)??
I was also thinking of Jacob appearing suddenly and it reminded me of the cheshire cat...
There is also the bird from I forget which ep but the one that says Hurley's name or so we think. Could be the Jeb Jeb bird?? The Jabberwocky is smoky??
Just some thoughts...
Ok this is OT a little but the follow the white rabbit as someone mentioned is from the Matrix also and again a reference to Alice but maybe the hostiles thought Ben was the "Neo" of the island and now they realize he's not, it's actually Locke. Locke is the chosen one etc.
Someone's probably mentioned it somewhere but no search right now - if there's a matrix thread already can someone kindly point me in that direction??

I've been wondering why there isn't a "smokie is the jabberwocky" thread.

Are you sure there isn't?? I didn't look :)
I'm wondering what happened to this thread...I just got into it and then people stopped posting. There's so much more to talk about isn't there?? No one on the bird?? It looked very unreal and kinda prehistoric to me...
ourcrazycatlady_of_the_island 06-16-2007, 03:25 PM Yes, I did a search for Jabberwocky. This is what I found. :)
