I was really surprised that Charlie knocked Des out like that, but it really was time Charlie's time to step up and be a hero (although we saw that he was already a hero to Nadia once), and to do something for the rest of the camp.

What did everyone think of their relationship in this episode and what happened at the end on the boat?

I loved the scenes between Desmond and Charlie. The fact that Charlie made the hard choice to go on the mission himself was great. I think that if Charlie does in fact die now, it was free-will that led to it, not that it was fate. He had a choice and he chose the path that would ultimately led to his death. IF he dies, that is. If he doesn't die, then I can also see it being that he broke the "curse" by accepting it and not trying to change the outcome. Anyway, that final scene between Desmond and Charlie was excellent.

I think they bonded closer than they ever have in that moment. Desmond finally acknowledged that just as he's been trying to get back to Penny, Charlie has someone to live for as well. Until now, it's been all about Desmond and Penny with little regard for Charlie and Claire. It was a scene I needed to see. Perfectly executed by Dom and Ian. I'm such the Chesmond shipper. I hope they both make it so the friendship can continue.

Yes, I was really proud of Des for seeing that Charlie has someone to live for too. I was really hoping that Desmond would say that Charlie has Aaron to live for too, though.

I was so sad to see the DS ring left behind in the cradle. :(

I really liked their scenes too. You could feel how much Desmond wanted to take care of Charlie, and how he accepted that death might have been his fate, and not Charlie's. I was really happy for Charlie that he made it under the water - I was so tense the whole time he was swimming!

Here's hoping the friendship is able to continue...

I just want to thank Charlie and thank Charlie and THANK Charlie for NOT letting Desmond make that sacrifice!

But I think his mission just got harder. In fact, I wonder if he'll ever turn off that switch AT ALL.

I really hope Charlie and Des survive. They work well together, and I'd like to see MUCH more of them as a team!

Yup - they were perfect tonight. I've always adored Des, but we really saw tonight the strain that this was taking on him. It's been, of course, terrible for Charlie, but imagine what Des has been going through (undoubtedly feeling guilty for having these flashes, for not being able to do anything about them). I saw the weariness and sadness in his eyes tonight. I couldn't believe Charlie was just going to let Des go down in the hatch for him, so although his hitting Des shocked me, I was glad.

Pace, I agree about Des and C/C as well. I think Des would love to see Charlie and Claire happy........not many Losties ever really acknowlege how important C/C are to eachother. I guess because Claire and Charlie individually hardly ever get much notice ,the big 4 being what they are.

Thank you Desmond!!!! Stupid misleading previews that made me think that Desmond demanded that Charlie sacrifices his life. Couldn't have been further from the truth.

That scene in the boat was so well done. As it was mentioned before, LOVED that Desmond mentioned that Charlie had someone to live for. And offering to take Charlie's place was so brave as well. I heart Desmond and Charlie so much. Hope they both make it to season 4.

Did anybody notice that Desmond wasn't there this time when Charlie was playing wonderwall. Is there any significance to that?

It was cool that he saved Desmond's Nadia though.

While this episode was chockfull of excellent scenes, the boat scene was my favorite of the night. It was nice to see Desmond finally acknowledge that Charlie's death will affect others after his one-track mindedness of Catch-22.

I'm guessing God doesn't really intervene if Isaac has to beat Abraham upside the head in order to carry out the sacrificing of himself.

But despite that, the previews give me hope. Lots and lots of renewed hope. But I'll leave that for the Previews thread.

ETA: Did anybody notice that Desmond wasn't there this time when Charlie was playing wonderwall. Is there any significance to that?I did notice that...but since he said he was in Covent Garden and Widmore's building is probably not located there (CG is a theatre/shopping district), I figured it was a different day. His clothes were different too.

Cappy's going to love this, doncha think? We were all so worried that Desmond was appearing so selfish lately and this just renewed the Chesmond love for me. Desmond was never going to let Charlie go to his death, it could only have happened with Charlie clocking him one. Totally redeemed Desmond for me, he wasn't just throwing Charlie to the sharks like he had nothing to live for. He would have gone in his place. And the previews show that Desmond wakes up, realizes what happened and goes down to help him. That's my boy! I hope they both make it.

I think the only reason Charlie would die is perhaps because he knocked out Desmond and Desmond wouldn't be awake to help him up out of the water fast enough... Charlie sealed his own doom.

But then I saw Desmond down in the hatch in the preview, so I guess that doesn't work out anyways.

I loved the Charlie/Des boat moment for reasons that have already been mentioned. One thing that pleased me was Desmond saying "Maybe I keep seeing you die because..." I have been waiting for Desmond to actually analyse why it is always Charlie he sees.

I don't buy this course correction rubbish. If that were the case he would have seen Ekos, Paulos and Nikkis deaths too. There is something special about Charlies fate. Maybe death really has nothing to do with it. Just the thought of dying has transformed Charlie into a better braver person. Maybe Charlie needed to grow and conquer the fear of death in order to fulfill his real destiny in the Looking Glass. Desmond was like his mentor/guardian angel.

That's true Cap. Charlie on the island was largely pretty passive. He always waited for someone else to step up and do things (unless it involved Claire or Aaron). Without the idea of his death being inevitable, he never would have gathered the resolve he needed to do this. And who could really? When he held that rock belt and stood in the boat, he looked like a man about to jump off a bridge. What a horrible situation for anyone to find themselves in.
