I could be wrong, but I thought it was the first time. Sayid mentioned it to her when he was tied to the swings over in Otherville - and I guess Alex thought about his comment. It did strike me when she said that. There's a bunch of others that would make very good Losties..

I don't remember Sayid saying that to her. I'll have to rewatch that (then again, I'll have till Febrary 2008 to do that!).

But I couldn't believe it when she said that tonight.

I always thought that Alex knew that Ben wasn't her real father, considering that she always has refer to him as Ben. Alex never called him Dad, or father. Alex and Ben seem to have a complex relationship. While Ben seems to act nice towards Alex, she on the other hand seem to hate him. Why? He raise her. It assume that he loved her. Ben was never shown talking down to Alex, nor beating her. So what is it that they are not showing. Alex thinks that they killed her mother. Could that be the reason for the Ben hate? do she believe that her father killed her mother...or could it be something else? Could Ben had told her that she was the reason that her mother died?

I don't remember Sayid saying that to her. I'll have to rewatch that (then again, I'll have till Febrary 2008 to do that!).

But I couldn't believe it when she said that tonight.

Sayid called her by her name, and she asked how he knew her name. He responded that it was because she looked just like her mother. Alex replied with, "My mother's dead." Sayid said, "So that is what they told you," and then the guy who was holding him captive knocked him out.

So, basically, if Alex is starting to wonder whether her mother might be alive, I think it's natural that she might start to question whether Ben is actually her father. Maybe she did some digging that we'll see in a future flashback.

Not quite. She did call him Dad once (maybe more), however spitefully.

Additionally, Alex was under the impression that her mother was dead, but never indicated that it was malicious (i.e. that anybody killed her). Personally, I think her animosity toward Ben more likely concerns 1) Karl, 2) the fact that she may have caught on to the fact that Ben's involved in some sinister business, or 3) both.

I believe she is now wondering if Ben is her dad because of Sayid's comment also and I think she hates Ben because of the way he treats Karl not to mention everyone on mystery island seems to have daddy issues

I'd guess Alex has been hoping she's not actually related to Ben because she sees him as such a jerk. So once Sayid mentioned about her mother a few episodes back, that got her thinking again.

The interesting thing is that she asked Carl about it. She must think he knows the truth, otherwise why ask him? Also, he seemed rather uncomfortable when she asked -- as if he didn't want to talk about it.

I think this was the first occurence of it.

As for the hating her dad part: I'm pretty sure it's because he's kind of an evil guy? Killing and kidnapping? Probably goes against what Alex believes in...
Also, he did imprison and tourture the love of her life (Karl). That would make most daughters hate their father I think.

This was definitely the first time we have seen something to suggest that Alex is aware of her parentage. She calls Ben "Dad" and "my father" on a number of occasions, to his face, to other Others and to Losties. She may have just found out that he isn't her biological father, and is acting in response, or she may have always known, but the story may have started to unravel due to recent events.

I think it's more the latter... I thought her line to Karl was just her reminding him that they both know something is rotten in Denmark, and that everyone is risking death at this point.

I know that Alex believe that her mother is dead, but they never stated how. Did Ben tell her that her mother died in child birth? Alex seem to think that the others were planning on killing Claire, although it seem like they were talking about giving her a c-section. So since the women on the island seem to die in birth, or before giving birth. Alex might think that Ben is causing it/responsible for it , so therefore she likely to believe that Ben had something to do with her mother's death.

I think Karl might be like Richard. Karl might have been born on the island, and he might not age, like Richard .If Alex is aware that Karl been on the island a long time, that she probably figure that he would know about her birth, and birth mother.

(*I do not think Karl ever been off the island, considering he had no idea who the Brady Bunch were.*)

Ben was going psycho in this episode. He was really freaked out by Locke and Jacob and probably by what he did. He shouldn't be in charge, he's losing control.

I think Alex has been questioning things for a long time. Even more so since Sayid said that she looked like her mother and she said my mother died and Sayid responded with I'm sure that's what they told you. She isn't like the rest of them. She's awesome and I hope that her and Danielle meet up soon! I can't wait for that.

I'm sure Alex is questioning a lot of things lately - not only because she's a teenager but also because she's aware of what's going on. Ben is the only dad she knows but she might just sense there's something not right. I bet the writers are working on some nice confrontation scene. But then, I wonder what she might do when she learns her biological mother had to kill her biological father because of the "sickness." It ain't easy being 16 on Craphole Island.

It was my impression as well that she was asking Karl because he knew something. I definitely got the feeling that Karl may be part of Richard's group from that scene.

I agree with you 100%. Ask soon as she said the bit about her "father" to him, i immediately took it as Karl knew the situation with Ben and how Alex "became" his daughter, as in he was around when she was taken from Danielle. I'm thinking Karl could be the one person who told Alex the truth and that could also be why they are so close. But I definitely think he is "ageless" like the eternally handsome Richard.

So Carl is a bit like Peter Pan (in the ageless world the 'island natives' seem to be living in)?

This would make for a great Maury Epi.

Maury: Ben you are not the father.

I think she has been questioning Ben since Sayid talked to her, but before that I think it was just typical teenage rebellion. She was angry at him for keeping her away from her boyfriend and torturing him, and she didn't like the way he treated the losties. I think she calls him Ben and not Dad out of defiance.
