Could it be that the looking glass is where smokey is controlled from? Could this be why they are on high alert, because they are still Darma? If they control smokey, then they pretty much know all so maybe they can help Charlie and gang out.

I'm thinking that the name looking glass would be a good fit with smokey.

Smokey is NOT Dharma. If it wasn't obvious already, it clearly is alluded to in TMBTC that it pre-dates Dharma. They had the sonic fence in place to protect them from the Island's "diverse wildlife," AKA Smokey.

Smokey is the judgment of the Island. It has been there as long as the Island has existed.
