View Full Version : Why Leave The Ring In Aaron's Crib?
ScottNotSteve 05-17-2007, 12:14 PM Did I miss something? I don't recall anyone placing the DS ring in Aaron's crib. Charlie was told by his brother to keep it safe, and to pass it down to his son, so this tells me (1) Charlie thinks he is going to die; and (2) He views Aaron as his son.
But he never told Claire the significance of the ring, and I'm not sure there is enough stated in his "list" intended for Claire (that he gave to Desmond) for Claire to understand the significance of the ring.
Have I missed anything here...the pan close-in on the ring in the crib tells me this is significnt somehow, but I feel I have missed something along the way.
Help me understand this.
Jack Sawyer 05-17-2007, 12:18 PM He's passing it on to Aaron cuz he thinks hes going to die. He didnt mention it to Claire cuz he doesnt want to worry her. The ring in the crib would speak for itself.
South Shore 05-17-2007, 12:18 PM I simply read it as Charlie seeing Aaron as his son.
He didn't want to tell Claire of the significance, to save her the pain of his 'inevitable demise'.
pinkrose 05-17-2007, 12:20 PM She may not know exactly why it was significant to Charlie, but it'll be significant to her because it was his if he does die.
olympia325 05-17-2007, 12:21 PM The ring is in the crib bc it really can't fit on Aaron's weenie fingers..
mikey_mike 05-17-2007, 12:22 PM its more symbollic than anything. It means Charlie has accepted his fate and is passing his ring on to the closest thing to a son tha the has.
Just the ring in the crib sitting there was so moving.
THis wasnt a case of some character motivation or thought that should be picked apart. This simply was a director's idea to bring an impressive visual to the sub plot.
Madge 05-17-2007, 12:24 PM All I could think of is "I hope Aaron doesn't put that in his mouth, he's going to choke on it. Charlie should know better". Then the symbolism occured to me. But still.
molly1977 05-17-2007, 12:24 PM Liam gave the ring to Charlie because Liam thought that he would not live to have children. Liam was involved with drugs at that time and Charlie was not yet. Liam wanted Charlie to pass down the legacy of Driveshaft and that moment in their loves to his children. Charlie was passing it on to his "child". Aaron is, for all accounts, his son. Charlie was just doing what Liam asked and passing the legacy of Driveshaft down to his child because Charlie believed that he would die in the Looking Glass.
Drugal97 05-17-2007, 12:26 PM It annoys me that the ring was left behind.. there was no reason for that... Claire could of just of easily found it & had no idea why it was there or some sort of bad feeling about what it meant...
I thought it was a bit overkill that it was left behind... but I did think it was beautifully fitting that he wanted to give it to Aaron.
Laurieg 05-17-2007, 12:26 PM AND the ring is mentioned on the list that Des is suppose to give to Claire so she will at least know it was very important to Charlie.
penyours 05-17-2007, 12:29 PM And ironically, Liam was the one who settled down first with a family and children, though Charlie did catch up, so to speak, on the island with Claire and Aaraon

Yes. Though, I thought it was more the legacy of Dexter Stratton, the maternal grandfather (or is it great grandfather?) whom Driveshaft was named after.

It's very sad/ironic how Liam tells Charlie that one day he'll have a wife and baby while he won't live to be 30. It turned out the other way around for the Pace brothers.:frown:

I wonder why Liam didn't ask for the ring back when Charlie came to vist him all drugged up.

Same here. :biggrin::biggrin:

I agree: Charlie thinks he is going to die and he views Aaron as his son. As far as the list, I think Claire would be able to read into it the importance of the ring. The ring would be important due to Charlie leaving it to Aaron. I think Claire is smart enough to put this all together.
MiniMe 05-18-2007, 12:16 AM The only problem is that the ring is still in the cradle back at the lostie beach. I assume that it will be part of what is blown up in the explosions. But if Claire had found the ring when they were leaving, she would have known that Charlie didn't think he was coming back.
nancy 05-18-2007, 12:17 AM Nothing is ever wasted on Lost. That ring in the cradle will turn up again before it's all done. Either Claire or Hurley will find it, or a still alive Charlie or Desmond will return to the island and find it. Or some Gollum-like creature will find it in the sand. But I don't think it will just be lost and forgotten.

I think the ring is cursed, that's my theory for the above.

so true. whoever wears it will become addicted to herion. but seriously that ring will fall and be buried in sand in no time. its the thought that counts though i guess.

I feel the same way, haha.
He leaves it there, and then Jin shoots the explosives and blows the hut, cradle and ring to bits!

I thought the ring being left behind had some significance...maybe a future plot point as you suggest. Also, interesting idea that the ring is cursed. And that gives me a theory about what could happen on the episode(s) following: One could argue that Charlie will NOT die precisely because he was NOT wearing the ring when he went to the Looking Glass. Which means if he makes it back and the ring is found...or if Claire finds the ring and decides to wear it...who knows?
desmondhume108 05-18-2007, 11:30 AM I have always held out hope for years that Charlie was Aaron's biological father. Maybe the Drive Shaft ring means more than what we believe.
