I was wondering - when they found the airplane and the hatch under it, they commented that something was mixed in with the dirt to keep grass from growing on it.... has that ever been explained? I was wondering if it was similar to the stuff on the ground around Jacob's shack - like a perimeter or something?

It was supposed to be there to make it easier to spot for dropping supplies. It would be kind of interesting to see why there are supplies being dropped at the Swan but there aren't supplies being dropped at the Pearl.

Mixing salt with soil prevents plants from growing in the soil easily.

The powder around Jacob's shack doesn't appear to be salted earth (and if it was, I think Locke would have recognized it, while he seems puzzled at the substance around Jacob's shack). But it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. :)

There was no supply drops at the pearl because it was only a monitoring station, nothing really important was happening there, as opposed to the pearl where they were venting the EM.I guess?

That is a possibility. I didn't think about that. There isn't really any storage area in the Pearl either. However the number of notebooks would point to them being there for a long time though.

True, but they probably had regular supplies via those blue vw buses. Remember when Roger was delivering beer the day of the purge? Maybe he delivered the other supplies needed, too.

im with guilty pleasure on this matter. Reminds me of school experiments with iron shavings and a magnet, making the iron appear to fly. and as we know there are underground tunnels and big magnets on the island maybe "smokey" is actually a machine covered in iron shavings, made to fly by underground magnets... who knows??? lets wait n see.

The people in the Pearl were there for eight hours then they would return to the Barricks after there shift and would probably take stuff in and out with them
