Just a little idea I'm pitching.
Didn't Ben say that getting rescued was a bad idea? I'm pretty sure that there was a whole thing about how "bad" getting rescued was. Anyway, I don't have the details on this but here's my idea.
What if rescue, in the end, equals death for the Losties? It started with Charlie. He was the first one, and he died because he unblocked the signal that led to them getting rescued.
Then we see Jack in his flash-forwards, depressed, drinking. Suicidal. Everything. When he takes out that paper it seems like just another brick in the wall, if you will. Something else bad that has happened on top of everything else. And what else would make Jack so depressed? So badly wanting to go back to the island - "we weren't suppoed to leave" I believe he said.
This is because, that since they've been rescued, the survivors have been dropping like flies for some reason or another. That's why Jack seemed so immune or something to the idea when he read that newspaper article - just another thing to be depressed about. Another death of one of his friends.
And this is also why no one showed up for the funeral - seeing everyone die like that eventually got too depressing. Going to every funeral wasn't going to work anymore.
And this is why Jack wants to go back - they weren't supposed to leave.
Idk, it's just an idea.
