He was probably called the Dentist because Bernard's last name has never been on the show before, and they didn't want to shift the focus to that in such a suspenseful scene.

Is it possible Bernard's last name would give something away? If it hasn't been said on the show before (has it?), what if it was Hanso, or de Groot or something?

What we really need is Bernard to join in one of Sayid's seasonal torture seasons and repeatedly ask "Is it safe?" Marathon man style.
