View Full Version : Missing Pieces #9 (111) - Tropical Depression
KeepingAwake 12-31-2007, 09:49 AM Features Arzt and Michael.
Arzt explains why he was on 815 and that he doesn't actually know much about island weather patterns.
Meh--disappointed.
jennylee27 12-31-2007, 10:52 AM Ok, why so much Arzt? I didn't get much out of this either, although I can see one explanation for why they wrote it. Now people can't cry continuity error because the monsoon season never happened. I hope the last couple mobisodes go back to the level of the Juliet/Jack, Juliet/Ben ones. Blah.

Same here... :undecide:
CrazyLatin007 12-31-2007, 03:10 PM I'll add my meh. Nothing really interesting here.
briar910 12-31-2007, 05:19 PM Lame. How about some characters we haven't seen yet!? Geez...
Electromagnetic Anomoly 12-31-2007, 05:55 PM Liked it!
Arzt:
Arzt's story almost made me cry!!!! :crybaby:
Who was the woman he fell in love with online? He
showed her a "buddy-mix" photo?! what the heck is that?
He lied just to speed up the rescue/escape.Arzt starting his
bug collection, which reminds us of Expose
Michael:
Good to see more Michael even if it is a fill in from
an earlier season. Sounds like this is the day before they set off,
which turns out to be very pivotal point.
Not the best, but I liked it.
KeepingAwake 12-31-2007, 06:15 PM EA, I think he mant that he showed her:
someone else's photo--his Buddy Nick or Mick, rather than his own.
lostinlaf 12-31-2007, 08:04 PM I wonder if we'll see more of Arzt in S4, or if he's only doing the mobisodes?
Heroic Poser 01-01-2008, 12:41 AM I like Artz, but it seems like they didn't think people would care about this one and just kinda threw it out there.
With the whole oceanicair website and stuff, I was thinking they hit the new year really hard.
pibbsneaker 01-01-2008, 05:22 AM More crap. Now we find out that Arzt lied about the monsoon season? Couldn't they have just said he was wrong? No way they wrote that scene in season 1 with him intentionally lying.
I'm really starting to hate these island flashbacks. This is a dangerous and gimmicky pattern that they started with Expose. They can revisit scenes with an on-island flashback, add in something that wasn't there before like Sun's and Mike's almost kiss, and say it was just something we didn't get to see. Looks more like it was something they decided to create later. Does any other show pull this kind of stuff?
I'm guessing the reason that we are seeing so much of Arzt is that they had to fly Daniel Roebuck out to Hawaii for scenes. It's painfully obvious that they are trying to get the most for their money.
I liked this one in an odd sort of way. Lost is as much about its characters as it is about its mysteries, and they're trying to make the characters real. My guess is that they stumbled on the Arzt character without knowing how much he'd catch the viewer's attentions, and before they knew what they had, they'd already killed him off. They needed someone to appear with lots of technical knowlege, but wanted to make him as opposite as opossible from "the Professor" on Gilligan's island, for the obvious reasons of not inviting comparisons. Arzt has gotta be the most pathetic character they've shown so far, and just when you think they can't possibly make him any sadder, they go and do it. But the interesting thing about him is that they don't just show the stereotypical geek; this geek has feelings, like every other human on this planet.
And that's very refreshing...
Electromagnetic Anomoly 01-01-2008, 02:50 PM EA, I think he mant that he showed her:
someone else's photo--his Buddy Nick or Mick, rather than his own.
Ohhh.. ok. wasn't sure what that meant. I got the feeling he showed her an old pic of himself when he was younger and possibly more fit.
Why would he be surprised that she left though?! He lied to her...
He lied about the monsoon too! Wow, it turns out that Arzt has some troubles being honest.
adam8023 01-03-2008, 03:01 PM Sorry to sound insensitive, but I cannot stand Artz anymore.
CrazyLatin007 01-03-2008, 03:09 PM It's Arzt: "z" before "t"

then you'll be pretty happy when you see what happens to him!
Alien Angie 01-04-2008, 08:08 AM Ok it didnt advance the plot...but I LOVE Artz...I was gutted he exploded because I thought he was a great bit of light relief!

Angie!!! Nice to see you back around. I like Arzt but, a little goes a long way, you know?
velton 01-04-2008, 12:57 PM i love all the missing pieces segments.....and I LOVE Artz.....he was such a different character.....and since he was a science teacher....it makes sense that you would want to have somebody like that on a "deserted" island to help pick out certain animal and plant species that would be "beneficial to the castaways" or "very dangerous---stay away".......i really like the missing piece segment with Hurley and Frogurt......for me.....these segments just "confirmed" answers to some of the questions that have been asked by the 'lage' since the beginning of the show. What i'm trying to say is that Damon and Cuse have has shows on ABC where they gave "solid answers" to some of the episodes......but the questions are still being asked.....even though Damon and Cust have answered fully on TV and podcasts. Soooooo i guess they thought that some of these misinformed fans would absorb the answers better if they had the actually cast members to "play it out" in a film segment. It makes sense to me.....and i actually enjoyed seeing the segments. Just a thought.

valentin_50 01-05-2008, 01:24 PM I wasn't a big fan of the last one with Arzt, thought it was just ok, but I enjoyed this one. It was a nice little look into his backstory, why he was on the plane, and the way he felt while on the island.

Just a friendly correction. It's Arzt: "z" before "t".
thanks. have a great New Year Everyone! :snowman:
And yes I agree more Arzt, He blew up way too early!
By his Blood 01-06-2008, 03:04 AM It sucked bring on the 31st!

shyguy 01-06-2008, 05:45 PM I thought it was pretty good. Arzt rules.
EricGunn 01-06-2008, 06:01 PM So Ar"z"t is a loveable liar. Pants on fire he got burned, or tnt'ed. regardless, his lying about the monsoon season wouldnt have changed the outcome of the raft taking off, and the hostiles intercepting and kidnapping Walt.
All the Ar"z"t mobies didnt advance the storyline. I agree with the poster that stated they got all the bucks out of Roebuck while he was in Ha. I didnt like the Ar"z"t character..Mr Roebuck's acting reminded me of a young over-acting William Shatner on Star Trek...And I sincerely hope this puts and end to Ar"z"t.s story arc, permanently. ;)
A great mobi would be Kate's dad telling Inman he has the chance to volonteer for a project called Dharma. Right after Inman crosses paths with Sayid...
Or the cream of the crop...What smoky showed Locke in S1, you remember? The most beautiful thing in the world?...
25 days and watching the little arrow on the clock...
Eric.
Charmedfreak 01-07-2008, 02:04 AM This one was probaly the worst of them all, a filler.
Only thing thats interesting is that it mentions what Artz did in Australia, other than that a complete waste of time. But I suppose that since not all the cast did them, they ran out of ideas.

Nice one!!
This wasn't exactly my favorite mobisode, but it was alright. It was a little bittersweet with how both characters ended up.
Occono 01-07-2008, 07:15 AM I liked this. I think this was exactly what these are about: little bits that wouldn't work in the show but are nice to see. I really liked that they referenced the Sun/Micheal relationship they dropped after they decided Harold and Daniel had a great buddy thing going on. It shows they don't just forget about that stuff.
Cardielost 01-07-2008, 03:32 PM Keep several things in mind.
1. They didn't get everyone to sign on to film these.
2. These are extras that only a small fragment of the audience will be able/take the time to access. Like all the other marketing ploys--TLE, ARGs, Oceanic websites, tie-in books, games, puzzles--they will reveal nothing essential to the understanding of the story.

dtisme 01-07-2008, 05:22 PM I disagree there is nothing here. 1) He says, "How do we know JACK doesn't have a medical problem?" (which I've been arguing for a long time); 2) we've seen this nasty spider he's catching before; 3) we know he may have been lured to Australia (as was, one could argue, almost everybody else); 4) we know he didn't plan on being on 815.

And wasn't that a medical degree that he said Jack might not have (or I could be recalling incorrectly)? But still good points.
PapaThor 01-07-2008, 07:30 PM I'm wondering who the woman was. Since so little was said about her I am more intrigued as to her part in getting Arzt to board 815.
Was she a part of DI? Was she working for Ben? Who knows.
For us, Arzt's part in all this was in not letting Locke, Jack, Kate and Hurley get blown up at the Black Rock. There's no better teaching than by example. (RIP Arzt)
beema 01-07-2008, 09:14 PM This was pretty pointless as Arzt dies like an hour later, and the musical accompaniment was incredibly cheesy and over the top for what was actually taking place...
these things seem to be getting worse now

I don't think anything's out of the running as something that can provide info to the story. Hints are everywhere. My bad on the quote - I watched again and I think he's saying "medical CASE" - "How do we know HE'S not a medical case." (and my bad that it was in Arzt and Crafts, not Tropical Depression [eyeroll] - but to me both Artz snippets can go together anyway). Oh that goofy Arzt.
Kyle356 01-08-2008, 11:40 AM I don't understand why some people get so upset when a mobisode like this doesn't contain some sort of super-good juicy information. These weren't even made for that. I agree with what cardie said. People also seem to have a huge problem with red shirts. They just want the Jacks and the Bens and Juliets and those who are their favorite characters on them. I personally find these mobisodes like this that there were actually mundane conversations like this one. Also, here they are telling us how Arzt got on 815. Something we wouldn't have found out other wise (hence, the point of these mobisodes). I found it utterly refreshing.
Personally, I haven't found any one of the mobisodes to be utterly meaty or super revealing. Some of them have definatly been more intense than others (ala Castle, 23, and Sleeper), but that's to make those stand out more. If they were all crazy insane plot builders then we could easily accuse them of intending to put in canonical bits about the show. I think we just need to see these for what they are: missing pieces [hat in the long run won't even matter].
Just my two cents.

Just my two cents.Your 2 cents is worth a million! I agree. They're just little Lost-related clips to tide us over until ... :drum roll please: the 31st.
Guinevere 01-09-2008, 02:07 AM I enjoyed this one. I didn't expect to after reading all the negative reviews. I think the most ironic thing was the last sentence Arzt said to Michael as Michael was getting up to leave, "I'll be the first one standing on the beach waving to you when you get back." Just shows to go ya...
Jesse 01-11-2008, 03:55 PM I think you guys missed the point of this one...
The girl he met in Austrailia.... its a seed for a future episode.

BaBuhn 01-12-2008, 01:05 PM My theory is, that this is another black&white / good&evil thingy.
Since Arzt means M.D., he could be the anti hero to Jack. He's clumsy, a liar, not that sucessful in his career and definitely not a leader.
jane_eire 01-14-2008, 07:36 PM Harold's got great timing in this one. Yay!
When Arzt catches the spider, he's saying, "I've got my eye on you and you've got your eye on me." Curious dialogue, talking to a Medusa Spider.
At the end, he waves his hand in much the same way he waves his hand before the dynamite goes off.
Was Michael wearing that Green shirt in Exodus?
When Arzt catches the spider, he's on his knees. Then Michael comes up, and he's sitting cross-legged. He seems more guilty than he should be about lying about the weather. This guy knows something that he's not letting on.

I thought he said, "I've got my eye on you and you've got your eyes on me" cause it's a spider. Haven't gone back to check though.
Liplocked 01-16-2008, 06:34 PM I’ll give you depression!
Where’s my monsoon? Ah Les, you lying toad. :D You do make me smile. It’s not schadenfreude really, it isn’t… but your brand of put upon misery and resentment is funny.
I’m not one of the beautiful, accomplished people either and I can sympathise (through fits of giggles), I actually find myself hoping your Australian date met with some terrible warm-air hand-drier related disaster in the ladies’ loo rather than stood you up but… Meh;
Since you were dealt with so harshly by the Island we may never know. Long may you be resurrected in flashback or vision quest to guide us again with the benefit of your (fabricated) knowledge and misanthropic musings.
3 times divorced….? One of them had to be Libby, right? *crosses fingers and toes* at least let TPTB allow that you met speed dating or something.
I thought this was a real treat, seeing another side to Mike was nice; I didn’t know he did quiet unless he’d WAAAAAAALT!ed himself hoarse – and if ‘no monsoon’ gets me a little closer to NIP (not in the Pacific) that’s fine by me – I fancied messing around in the Azores for a bit anyway.
Antes morrer livres que em paz sujeitos (or run hide in the caves – your call). ;)

Totally! It's all gravy. Quit complaining about the gravy!
RodimusBen 02-02-2008, 10:33 AM Who knows, maybe there will be a connection after all. I wonder who Arzt's mystery woman was? Maybe... Libby?
