View Full Version : Missing Pieces #11 (108) - Jin Has a Temper-Tantrum On the Golf Course
Stumper 01-14-2008, 04:04 PM Mobisode 11 - "Jin Has a Temper-Tantrum On the Golf Course"
Writer - Drew Goddard
Director - Jack Bender
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Jin, Hurley, and Michael are playing golf. Jin is putting.]
Hurley: All right Jin, you sink this putt, you win.
Michael: He can’t understand you.
Hurley: He can feel me, dude. He can feel me.
[Jin misses.]
Michael: Yes!
Hurley [To Michael]: Congratulations, dude. [To Jin] It’s all right, Jin, you’ll get him next time.
[Jin goes on a rant, screaming (in Korean) and running around.]
Jin: No, why? Why can’t I hit the ball in the hole?
Michael: Hey it’s ok man, it’s only a game.
Jin: Shut up! Don’t pity me! All I wanted was one thing to go right.
Hurley: You can’t…
Jin: Do you want to say something? You don’t talk for once, you don’t talk! How can I lose to both Hurley and Michael?
Hurley: I think I heard our names in there somewhere.
Jin: I hate this horrible island. Why doesn’t anybody understand me? All I wanted was one moment of happiness! Why? Why can’t I be happy? Who invented this crazy game? No! You horrible ball! Why?
Michael: Maybe we should do something?
Jin: Please take this handcuff off! I’m going crazy.
Jin: You don’t care about me, do you? Don’t look at me with pity in your eyes. I’ve beaten men for lesser offenses!
Hurley [to Michael who headed toward Jin]: Eh, don’t touch him. Let him get it out.
Jin: No! You horrible ball! Why couldn’t you go in the hole? You horrible ball! Why? Why? Why?
Hurley: Maybe we should take a break from golf for a while.
Jin sits down and cries: I’m so alone. I’m so alone.
[Michael picks up the golf bag, and he and Hurley walk away.]
Jynes 01-14-2008, 04:52 PM This was so hilarious.
EricGunn 01-14-2008, 05:52 PM It left me scratching my head...sigh.
But then, Asian cultures are very different than ours. Any signs of vulnerability or weakness are viewed with "shame" and embarrassement.
Jin looks like he's not used to coming in second...But, after a few months on the Island, Jin seems to have gained control over his emotions. The fact he's been incorporated in the main group along with Sun also helped his temper cool down. This also explains why he was so defensive in the first two seasons, imho.
I can relate. I moved to an english speaking provonce when I was thirteen. I felt alone, I couldnt communicate effectively and I always felt that people were staring me down, or waiting for me to open my mouth and speak...So all could have a good laugh at my expense. Not funny being in a minority group, unless the people around you are open-minded.
6 outta 10 for me.
Eric.
jennylee27 01-14-2008, 05:53 PM Wow, that was freaking hilarious. Daniel must have had a great time filming that. I feel bad for Jin, though, as we are supposed to. Poor guy! His life was especially rough during season 1.
evil-pineapples 01-14-2008, 07:16 PM Am I the only one who thinks this was terrible? I get the point it's trying to send, but it's just so tedious and laughable. And who came up with that title? Is that because of the writer's strike?
Jack Sawyer 01-14-2008, 07:27 PM Am I the only one who thinks this was terrible? I get the point it's trying to send, but it's just so tedious and laughable. And who came up with that title? Is that because of the writer's strike?
That's actually the name? I must have missed it; the copy I watched was so bad.
All in all I think this one's not so bad as it at first appears, even to me. Jin has put up with alot of shit on the island - deemed a criminal (cuffs), scared with an axe, blamed for the raft, kicked in the face, estranged from his wife....and he always deals with it so well, so stoically in the 3 Season we've seen. This, for me, fills in how he did it, how he stayed so silent despite it all. He let it all out in big catharctic outburst.
Not my favorite of the Missing Pieces but it shows me Jin is at least human. ;)
CrazyLatin007 01-14-2008, 07:37 PM Sounds funny.
jennylee27 01-14-2008, 07:42 PM And who came up with that title? Is that because of the writer's strike?
Everything for the mobisodes was written and filmed before the strike.
shmyshmy 01-14-2008, 09:54 PM I thought this one was pretty funny. Nothing really informative, but still funny :)
It shows how frustrated Jin must have been in season 1 :( but that's about it :p. Hurley and Michael were funny too :)
seaquelost 01-14-2008, 10:31 PM lol.....I thought it was pretty funny. Kinda' feel sorry for Jin, though.
It seemed as though Jin was actually "yelling at the island" in part of that scene. Poor island...it gets blamed for everything, like Jack. ;)

LOL your Jack comment :p. Exactly, the ball not going in was just what made him explote...
I was remembering that I wasn't a big Jin fan in S1 because of the way he treated Sun, but this missing piece kind of explains how he was feeling. Again, I feel liked I jumped to a conclusion back in S1 and a mobisode gives me a new angle ;)
Claudia815 01-15-2008, 01:20 PM This was much better comic relief than the Frogurt one and kudos to Daniel Dae Kim, I think he did great. I'm very grateful for all the actors who signed up to do these and give us at least tiny morsels to keep us afloat during the monster hiatus.
We've seen most of the losties have their minibreakdowns on the Island (Jack, Kate, Locke, Shannon, Charlie, Ana, Sun in the garden, etc) and I'm glad Jin got his moment. It's very realistic considering how isolated he is and it's always great to see him away from Sun and able to form other bonds on the Island.
Electromagnetic Anomoly 01-15-2008, 07:00 PM :dongetit:
This is the first mobisode that left me speechless at first.
and now... I'm still speechless except for whatever I just wrote.

:rotflmao2: You can talk with your fingers? I'd still be speechless. Priceless comments there EA! Great avatar as well. A bit bent, just like good O'le Ben. ;)
Eric.

Absolutely, if it wasn't for these mobisode I would have gone crazy by now
I actually look forward to new mobisodes every week, at least I'm getting something about Lost  I know they aren't very revealing or shocking as the real episodes, but I'll take what TPTB give me  Plus it gives the fans something new to discuss

Sign Language, no?!
Also, some speeches are written first, no?!
I've at last gathered my thoughts on this mobisode and have one word..
Random.
Liplocked 01-16-2008, 02:01 PM Clearly no one on this thread plays golf.
Kudos to Dan - can't be easy to rant in a language you don't speak.
and hugs to poor hurting and frightened Jin - culturally adjusted to spare him shame or embarassement - so desperatly in need of the wife who was set to leave him. So sad.
Guinevere 01-16-2008, 02:25 PM I'm anxiou to see this mobisode on Monday! I think Jin and Sawyer are the characters who've come the longest way in their character development. This really does sound like a missing piece!
jennanne 01-16-2008, 06:38 PM I never thought I would be thinking of Jin as Happy Gilmore :undecide: But this was the first mobisode that really makes me want to go back and watch S1 with a new perspective, loved it.
Was this the first time that they broke from the standard of captioning Korean only when spoken between Sun & Jin (other than Hurley's dream)?
pibbsneaker 01-16-2008, 08:56 PM I actually liked this mobisode. It didn't show us something that they should have shown us in the first place like Mike's and Sun's almost kiss, or reveal a character to be lying like Tropical Depressions did. I can sympathize with those that didn't like the humor of it though.
PapaThor 01-16-2008, 10:11 PM Absolutely, if it wasn't for these mobisode I would have gone crazy by now

Amen to that.
Just biding my time until an hour before the show starts again. Why an hour? Because we'll be tuning in to what our Canadian fans will be posting about the episode before we see it out here in the borderlands.
Oh, the joys of being spoiled.

LOL. I hear ya, brother! Let us talk about the frustration of the viewers posting "WOW!" and "OMG!" with little to no details, and then nothing...even during the commercials...
Back OT, I really loved this MP...extremely funny even though it maybe shouldn't be funny, but scary...if that makes any sense...there's probably a technical term for it that escapes me. It certainly fits the therapy theories...
But maybe it's just my dark and twisted sense of humor...
Kudos to Daniel! and Jorge, of course...
Charmedfreak 01-17-2008, 09:58 AM This was was quite funny, Jin was funny in this one. I dont see this as a pointless/filler mobisode, it did have a point in terms of Jins character. The Frogurt and maybe the Artz/Michael one were kinda filler.
celedwyn 01-17-2008, 10:13 AM I liked this one... It went from a comical situation to the audience feeling pity & feeling sorry for Jin.
Hey, I guess that's why we don't see much of the golf course these days either.
Dansam333 01-18-2008, 07:03 PM I liked it. Always good to see Hurley and Jin in the same scene, because they're always funny together (eg: Tricia Tanaka is dead). It was a bit pointless, but it showed Jin's vulnerable side at a very difficult time, plus it gave a reason why the golf course is never seen nowadays. :D
Narrim 01-19-2008, 06:27 AM Good point by jennanne about the Korean subtitling (which I why I'm in this thread at all =P). I even took notice of this early in the video and blocked the text with my finger like I was watching the show proper. I get that it wouldn't make any sense for a mobisode without it and we'd be sending thirty people out looking for translations, but it's just a weird thing to see.
Awesome clip, though.

True enough, it is weird too see. I like how they always (well, often) keep us in the dark about what Jin or Sun has said or is saying. Funny that you covered it up.
CharleyIsAwesome 01-19-2008, 04:15 PM I've only just watched the missing pieces, this one is the funniest :) Although it also shows the light-heartedness of the Island, but not. If you get me.
I don't make sense anymore :undecide:
Who invented this crazy game?
PAULO: You play golf?
DESMOND: I'm Scottish. Cheers.
:)
Ok with not knowing everything 01-19-2008, 09:59 PM Although it also shows the light-heartedness of the Island, but not. If you get me.
I don't make sense anymore :undecide:
Nah, I get you. I thought this one was really funny, and sad at the end. I like Hurley's lines in this one: "He can feel me", and "I think I heard our names in there somewhere".
I just played this mobisode for my wife. I've watched all three seasons numerous times, but we started watching Lost together last week. We're currently on Disc 2 of Season 2.
After watching the mobisode, I said, "Poor Jin." And she sarcastically added, "yeah, poor sexist Jin."
He really has come a long way, hasn't he? I'll be sure to discuss Jin's development when we finish Season 3.
CharleyIsAwesome 01-20-2008, 02:24 PM You make a good point, Jin has developed a lot since crash landing on the island, from being so detached from the group and being nasty to Sun, to being a well loved member of the community, and of course now being the father of Sun's unborn child. The change is quite dramatic.
In this "mobisode" it is the old Jin we saw at first, but in a comical yet depressing light.
Guinevere 01-21-2008, 11:11 PM I think this does point out the enormous strides Jin's made since he's been on the Island. After watching DOC, I realized that Jin had based a lot of his life expectations and rules from what he had observed "successful" people doing as opposed to his "failure" father. The Island is turning all these preconceptions on their head and his father's raising is coming to the fore.
This is just an example of what Jin expected would happen if he sunk the putt and, when it didn't happen, he lost it. We all do that in our lives. It was a really good mobisode on several levels. I had almost forgotten that Michael wasn't always angry and that Hurley and Michael could be funny together. Of course, that's out the window now but I digress.
Heroic Poser 01-22-2008, 12:55 AM Note to writers...
Reading subtitles on a small crappy phone is not what I look forward to doing.
By the way, can anybody say Happy Gilmore?
Happy Jin-More?

shanzy288 01-22-2008, 03:13 AM poor little jin
Earendil 01-24-2008, 11:54 AM Jin channeling Happy Gilmore.
"Why you don't you just go home? That's your HOME! Are you too good for your home?"
Was so expecting that to come out of Jin next.
Noeland 01-24-2008, 04:50 PM Come on guys, that was comedic brilliance.
"I've beaten men for less"
I laughed out loud during this one. Just effin' brilliant.
And Lost isn't laugh out loud funny very often, so I enjoyed the ever loving crap out of ths one.
Awesome.
jane_eire 01-29-2008, 01:19 PM Was this the first time that they broke from the standard of captioning Korean only when spoken between Sun & Jin (other than Hurley's dream)?
What a fantastic observation. We only see subtitles when someone in the action actually understands what's being said.
Anyone who loves golf understands Jin perfectly.

I don't think you need to understand golf to get what hes feeling, the body language tells it all. ;)
A nice little break from the seriousness of LOST.
lostmio 01-29-2008, 07:24 PM I thought this mobisode was intended as just a comic kick, too, and not all that funny. No big spoiler or new info, so I've just now gotten around to reading the thread.
I'm flabbergasted that no one's picked up on what Jin's rant was REALLY about.
He's mad 'cause his ball won't go in the hole, but it's not about golf.
He and Sun had problems, remember? Need I spell it out?
MtnGrlbytheBay 01-30-2008, 04:56 PM That thought crossed my mind, but it was a stretch. I would hardly thing that they'd be TTC on an island on purpose!
I also don't think this was JUST comic relief. A couple lines that I find suspicious are:
"I've beaten men for less..."
"...handcuff off!"
Something just tells me that once Jin is off the island, those two facts might cause him a bit of trouble.
I strongly think that it would be foolish for them to invest this much time/money for simple comic relief. There's a MISSING PIECE in there somewhere, but it's pretty vague.
jane_eire 01-30-2008, 06:34 PM All right, let's look at this one in a little more depth.
HURLEY: All right Jin, you sink this putt, you win.
MICHAEL: He can’t understand you.
HURLEY: He can feel me, dude. He can feel me.Okay, so the premise for being understood is being set up. This goes back to the translation issues, and in particular the convention of showing us subtitles only when the speaker is actually being understood.
Jin misses the putt, then...
MICHAEL: Yes!
HURLEY [To Michael]: Congratulations, dude. [To Jin] It’s all right, Jin, you’ll get him next time.
JIN: No, why? Why can’t I hit the ball in the hole?
MICHAEL: Hey, it’s okay man, it’s only a game.
JIN: Shut up! Don’t pity me! All I wanted was one thing to go right.
Jin is frustrated with more than the game of golf. He wanted just one thing to go right, and that one thing didn't come through. He asks a good question: Why can't he hit the ball in the hole? This is a question that has vexed golfers for centuries. Some "golf gurus" claim that the game is largely mental, and that failure often comes from not visualizing a successful outcome. In this light, Jin's failure is the antithesis of Walt's success at lodging the knife in the Tree Knot in Special.
But there's more going on with Jin...
HURLEY: You can’t…
JIN: Do you want to say something? You don’t talk for once, you don’t talk! How can I lose to both Hurley and Michael?Part of Jin's problem is that he doesn't relate very well to other people. Obviously language is a barrier, but there's more to it than that. Listen to how he positions Michael and Hurley - he feels that he ought to be able to beat at least one or the other, if not both. I think Jin feels he's superior to them, and the game of golf is vexing him for demonstrating the fallacy in his thinking.
HURLEY: I think I heard our names in there somewhere.
JIN: I hate this horrible island. Why doesn’t anybody understand me? All I wanted was one moment of happiness! Why? Why can’t I be happy? Who invented this crazy game? No! You horrible ball! Why?Jin hates where he is, the Island in particular. Hate doesn't really make a good basis for forming relationships. And then Jin goes on to externalize his failure in making himself happy. Why can't he be happy?
The Room 23 video provides a clue: We are the causes of our own suffering.
MICHAEL: Maybe we should do something?
JIN: Please take this handcuff off! I’m going crazy. You don’t care about me, do you? Don’t look at me with pity in your eyes. I’ve beaten men for lesser offenses!
HURLEY: Eh, don’t touch him. Let him get it out.Jin accuses Michael and Hurley of not caring about him, but I think that's a bit of projection on his part.
What does the handcuff symbolize? What is Jin attached to that he hasn't let go of yet? When does the handcuff finally come off? Isn't that after he returns to the beach camp after his Heroic Journey to the Other Side of the Island? Until then, Jin was "the other" in relationship to the Losties in so many ways...
JIN: No! You horrible ball! Why couldn’t you go in the hole? You horrible ball! Why? Why? Why?
HURLEY: Maybe we should take a break from golf for a while.
JIN: I’m so alone. I’m so alone.
The game of Golf first comes up in the episode Solitary, and golf is definitely one of those games that's more "solitary" than most sports. While it can be played in teams and increasingly is played as such, the great majority of play pits individual against individual, or even just trying to play better than one has before.
What's funny is the frustration of the game itself - it truly is one of the most ludicrous exercises ever devised. What's not funny is Jin's isolation from everybody else.
Jin's situation is similarly highlighted in In Translation, on the golf course, by Hurley:
Hurley: You should try sea urchin. They've got more ping. Hey. So listen... I know things got kind of nasty down there at the beach, and, um... I don't want to get involved in husband and wife stuff, but I figured, you know... you might need to relax. So... C'mon, dude, I'm trying here. Okay, you want to be an outsider? It's your business.
And lostmio? You don't need to spell it out, I hope! Yeesh.
bterrill 02-25-2008, 08:05 AM jin is one of my fav characters (I don't know why, I can't understand most he says) and I found this one to be one of my favorites.
I thought it was hilarious,. though I don't know if that was the intention of it.
Jin rocks.
laladollz 03-05-2008, 03:38 PM Was great! I have literally been in his shoes :D
G-Man 04-03-2008, 03:20 PM While this mobisode was pretty darn hilarious, it also confused me a little bit.
In a way it kind of seemed like a parody that the actors came up with (obviously referencing that Adam Sandler golf movie) and less like an actual part of the story. I love the clip to death though for its humor!
As a big Sun and Jin fan, it was definitely a little odd to see Jin threatening Hurley and Michael, albeit half seriously. I dunno. It worked and it was nice to see and hear all kinds of references to Season 1 (my favorite  ) like the handcuff.
Definitely one of the more memorable mobisodes! Good work guys!
