Seems to me that some people stayed on the island and they are sending people out to find out more about the island and its inhabitats....

my first thought was what if more than 6 actually came back, but that a group (not sure what to call them beyond others right now) are killing them and perhaps that is how the person in the coffin died. that might not have been the first funeral jack had gone to

I think whatever was left of the original group was left on the Island. We don't know all the why's and wherefore's yet but whoever the man was that first visited Hurley in the institution he wants to know if that group is still alive - possibly even the original Dharma group. I believe there's a third group which will be introduced this Season... Perhaps some which are left from the original Dharma group.

ummm.... I don't think that is possible. We know that Hurley won the lottery before the island. We know that he used the Numbers that he heard Lenny say whilst in the Institution. So, yeah, not possible.
