There was a chess board in front of Aboddon in the hospital.
Any chess folks care to enlighten us with the set up of the board?
This seemed to be a topic in the mobisodes and elsewhere in LOST.

Until I do a rewatch I can't really say.

HOWEVER, I find it intriguing that in one mobisode Jack and Ben are playing chess. Then we see in TTLG that Tom and Patchy are playing chess -- with Ben's board I believe.

Then we see a chess board -- the same one methinks -- in the looney bin.

I thought that too as soon as I saw it. I'd really like to see the set up ... or moves that were used, if they were similar to what we've seen before.

I love chess. It's a tremendous game and it translates to the show brilliantly with all the thinking ahead of moves.

The game I never played that I want to learn is backgammon . . . another battle between light and dark.

Even more intriguing was the conversation Ben and Jack had. Ben told Jack that there might come a day in the future when Jack will want to get back to the island. Ben told Jack to remember their conversation on that day. Now, just before Hurley wants to go back to the island, a chess board shows up. Very odd indeed.

Also a metaphor for the opponent Hurley may have in Abbadon? Really, that guy didn't sound like he had the best interests of the people left on the island at heart.

Let us not forget Locke playing chess on the computer in The Flame which led to it's explosion in Enter 77.

Ah, yes. Forgot about that. Even more interesting if that's what enabled the Freighties to find the Island in the first place.

I noticed the chessboard too, little details like that jump at me now that I'm obsessing over the show on the internet.

In the mobisode, Ben tells Jack it's been a while since he's had someone with a little skill to play against and in TMBTC we see Richard and Patchy play. I guess that's a snub on their chess skills, but I thought it would be funny if Ben's previous worthy opponent was Jacob himself. He and Locke can go to Jacob's shack and play a tournament with Jacob and Christian (who taught Jack).

OK, seriously... if someone finds an easter egg in that scene, let us know. Either way, chess pieces are just another type of white/black symbolism.

Abbadon is sitting at the white pieces. Hurley, from Leonard's old seat at Connect Four, moves to Abbadon's table and sits, not with the black pieces, but in-between the two sides.

Neutral? Mediator? Undecided? What is Hurley?

Not neutral, just not supposed to be on the island.

An unfortunate accident that he got on the plane maybe?

I actually didnt pay much attention to the table where they had "the talk".. but maybe Hurley prefers checkers ; ).

Could there be any significance to the location of the chess pieces in the chess game that is being played on the table where Matthew Abbaddon speaks to Hurley about upgrading facilities? I don't know much about chess aside from how to play it, but thought this could be a possibility.... white vs brown = good vs evil, and who could be currently winning? Just an idear...

Looks like White is winning.

--The Chess Game has just finished the initial phase of the game and looks to move on into Mid-Game.
-- All the Pieces seem to follow correct traditional play Except for 1...... The White Knight has advanced to the Black (or dark) side, and is Threatening Black's Queen (that is not the King).
Clearly, moving the white Knight on its own in such a aggressive manner is not the moves of a skillful chess player and is not a wise move in early chess play. spending too many useless moves to send the Knight over on Dark's side and then would have to use more useless moves to get the Knight out of trouble.

Freighties could be the Light side...clearly because Mr Abbadon is sitting in front of the Light Pieces.

Others could be the "Light" side
Other thoughts.... I cant help from thinking of Ben saying " I have a Man on thier boat"
this leads me to see that Ben and the Others could be the "Light Pieces" where the Knight represents the "Man on thier Boat" and the "Freighties" are the Dark pieces.

even thou that Mr Abbadon is sitting in front of the Light pieces....strange.

If that is true.. Others are the Light pieces and Freighties are the Dark...then this could represent a very naive move on Ben's Part...and in fact will weaken him.

Main Point........
whoever is the Light side is weakened with the white Knight over on the other side.
perhaps, Ben's ploy of "the Man on thier Boat" will backfire?

also, Nice view of Hurley being Neutral .. in middle.
