I am trying to put some thoughts together from this episode. I seem to have a hell of a theme going.
Matthew Abaddon. Abaddon = Angel of the Abyss, realm of the dead, an underworld of lost souls, etc.
Redemption Isle - everyone on the island has a past and needs redemption. Some have been redeemed, some have not.
Smokey, aka Cerberus, aka security system - Cerberus guarded the gate to Hades and ensured that spirits of the dead could enter, but none could exit.
Jack, Kate, Hurley and the rest of the O6 have managed to escape the island, and in turn, have not been redeemed. Leaving their friends behind and keeping secret the fact that they are still stranded just adds to the list of their sins.
Enter Abaddon from the underworld abode of lost souls. Hurley, and eventually Jack's lives have become a living hell. They are wracked with guilt and their lives are falling apart. Apparently the person in the coffins life took a similar downward spiral.
Matthew Abaddon seems to me to be some extension of Smokey, trying to guilt Hurley into returning to the island. Dead Charlie is another extension of Smokey, trying to appeal to Hurley in the guise of a trusted friend. Hurley, who is aways in the way, never allowed to help, is given the message "they need you". Way to work the dudes psyche Dead Charlie!
Abaddon is trying to get Hurley to admit that others were left behind. He is trying to coax him into a confession. Confession> judgement > redemption??? I think the only way the O6 can be redeemed is to return to the island and remain there.
Everyone is a better person on the island. Hurley is sane, Locke and Rose are healed, Jin is able to father a child, Kate is respected, Jack is a leader, even Sawyer is becoming a nice guy. The island is their only hope of redemption.
I'm not sure where to go from here with all this. But the past themes seem to be converging and falling into place. I am still formulating my thoughts.
I believe the person in the coffin was Ben. He was neither friend nor family to Jack, and not worthy in Kate's eyes of paying last respects to. He would have no friends or family off island to attend his funeral. Jack was driven to suicide not because he mourned the loss of this person, but because he was the only one who knew the way back to the island. With him died Jacks only hope of returning to the island.
