View Full Version : Why would Kate Leave the Island?
scollins1225 02-01-2008, 10:24 AM She has a murder charge waiting for her back in the "real world" off the island. We see her in the FF on with Jack saying "we have to go back" and she doesn't seem to have any intention of returning?
Do you think as part of the Oceanic 6 she took someone else's identity (maybe another on flight 815)? Or was offered immunity or cleared of charges?
Just wondering if there is a group that stays on the island, why she wouldn't remain with Sawyer (unless he later leaves Locke's group and returns home to be with Kate)?
olympia325 02-01-2008, 10:32 AM It's a good question about Kate. I personally think she was offered immunity upon leaving the island. From whom and why? I'm not really sure...Maybe their "rescuers" have the power and ability to grant her pardon so long as the other Losties (not the Oceanic 6) are kept on the island.
hiltop 02-01-2008, 10:36 AM Also remember that the Marshall who made it his life's work to chase her, conveniently died shortly after the crash. There may not be many people interested in chasing her anymore.
But it is wierd that surely her face would be a familiar one with all the press and the Oceanic 6 being celebrities that someone in law enforcement and even her own mother would recognize her and turn her in, not to mention her ex-husband cop.
She had to have been pardoned.
Cuttler 02-01-2008, 10:40 AM Well she wouldn’t have any idea she’d be offered immunity because that’s in the fugure (though there would be no reason for granting it). My guess is that she is planning on giving a false name. Or perhaps she feels that prison is just safer then that wacko island is lol. She sure does want to go home it seems.
BondMan007 02-01-2008, 10:52 AM I'm not sure if those who "left" the island did so by choice or by force.
sioux21 02-01-2008, 11:10 AM I actually wondered this out loud to my husband last night. When Jack was saying they were being saved, Kate did have a funny look on her face, like her emotions were definitely mixed. And, I said, yeah, she doesn't want to go. Also, when she had the phone and the "rescuer" asked who she was, I thought she hesitated before she said, "This is Kate." I thought she might give an alias for a second.
babygotbackgammon 02-01-2008, 11:18 AM Also Kate thinks she might be pregnant and probably just doesn't want to die.

or maybe she was planning on running to another country.
LostMyMarbles 02-01-2008, 12:51 PM Kate's eagerness puzzles me, too--that "I can't believe we're really getting off the island" conversation. Especially since when she was talking to Minkowski (?) on the phone, she gave her real name. That would have been a good time to set up a new identity.
Fierro 02-01-2008, 12:52 PM Also Kate thinks she might be pregnant and probably just doesn't want to die.
WINNER!
BuffyMars 02-01-2008, 12:57 PM Maybe she figured nothing could be worse than fighting for her life on a daily basis? lmao
efbeyi 02-01-2008, 01:01 PM I am also really confused as to why Kate wants to get off of the island. She has no way of knowing that she will have immunity. Also when the plane crashed, in the real world I'm sure they had lots of news stories about it, and probably about the crash victims (sorry to compare, but remember when 9/11 happened, we found out all sorts of information about all of the plane victims?). This leads me to believe that news stories would have had some sort of story such as "Also on this flight was escaped convict Kate, blah blah.."
I don't think they got new identities when they got back to the real world because we know Jack is still Jack the doctor, and Hurley is still Hugo.
Another question I have is how they were able to get back their identities since Naomi told them their "Bodies" were found and identified...
Laurieg 02-01-2008, 01:05 PM Kate and Rose for that matter. She had cancer in the real world and believes the island is keeping her healthy.
QueenElessar 02-01-2008, 02:13 PM Well we have to remember that Kate initally wanted to get off the island very badly. Remember back in season 1 when she tried to help Sun poision Jin so that she could take his place on the raft? She was also trying to convince Michael that Sawyer didn't deserve a spot. She was working any angle she could to try to get off the island. Now granted in that case she would be escaping with a little more stealth. It's possible they could get to a shore somewhere and she could get away without anyone knowing who she really was. If they're rescued this time there will a lot more fanfare behind it and it would be hard for her to escape the law.
I think Kate feels trapped on the island and she hates that. She's been running for a long time and she doesn't really know anything else. We saw this in her flashback when she married Nathan Fillion. She doesn't know how to settle down or stay in one place.
I think there's a part of her that feels like she's found a little bit of redemption on the island, but there's still this urge not to be stuck that she can't fight. And she probably feels like if she can just get off then there's a chance she can get away. If she stays on the island it will be her whole life. But if she gets off at least she has a shot of breaking away and going wherever she wants.
AZKnix 02-01-2008, 02:24 PM I actually just came here to post about this...The think that they did indeed give Kate a new identity, perhaps as a means of assuring that she doesn't say anything about what happened to the other survivors or trying to get back to the island. This would fit with her meeting Jack in a really out of the way place at the end of last season. Maybe she's not one of the Oceanic 6?
morpheus917 02-01-2008, 03:04 PM Well, I'm just saying that Kate would have every reason to leave if she was actually pregnant. So, it seems, at this early stage that the Oceanic 6 are:
CONFIRMED:
Jack (get back to Sarah, life, etc.)
Kate (pregnant??)
Hurley (back to real world without pressures of 'cursed' money)
POSSIBLE:
Kim & Jim (& baby??)
Michael (because of the neighborhood of the funeral)
Juliet (to see her sister & family)
PROBABLY NOTS:
Rose & Bernard (stay to avoid her cancer)
Locke (stay with the island)
Sawyer (he has nothing to live for with 'Sawyer' dead. Some could argue that he has Clementine, though.)
Walt (island likes him too much)
Sayid (he is treated more fairly here than in the real world)
Thoughts?
diabolo237 02-01-2008, 04:07 PM Also Kate thinks she might be pregnant and probably just doesn't want to die.
EXACTLY! If she is pregnant, she can either go home and face the music or die during childbirth on the island....hmmm...going home doesn't look so bad after all. Of course this all hinges on her actually being pregnant.

But Kate has ALWAYS been eager to get off the island, as far back as the first episode. New start, freedom, lots of trees for the tomboy to climb--the island seems like the perfect life for Kate.
booyah 02-01-2008, 04:27 PM Kate knows she can't have her baby on the island. I think Kate may have been a stow-away on the escape event. I don't think she is actually counted as part of the famous Oceanic 6.
She didn't go to the funeral because that would be blowing her cover...which fits with her look of "are you crazy?" to Jack during last seasons finale.

Yes but if they can only take 6 people with them, this might guarantee her a spot to leave, since she'd die on the island anyway. Might be why Sun is also leaving the island.
duckab234 02-01-2008, 04:55 PM i think Kate is pregnant with a boy. In the season 3 finale, when she says she has to get back cause "he'll be wondering where i am", she's talking about her son and not sawyer. she couldn't leave him home alone for too long but wanted to know why Jack called her.
dushell 02-01-2008, 05:12 PM Agreed. I think she leaves because she knows she is pregnant and doesn't want to die there. I think the "him" she refers to in TTLG is a son.
Redemption_Isle 02-01-2008, 05:18 PM Kate also seems more at ease in LA than on the island. Has her urge to run vanished?
