In the hospital, we see a chalk board with a palm tree, island, waves, shark and a sun.
I wonder if Hurley drew this one.

Considering his reaction to "a view of the ocean" I doubt it!

haha, didn't think about that.

yeah, totally!
Someone on the staff, I believe did the mural in the hatch. I wonder if who ever drew this was the same person, otherwise they were heavily influenced by it.

I do see the similarities though. Good eye!

As Freud would have said about the drawing, "The island is your mother who is nurturing. The sun is your father who shines his light and warmth over the island who is your mother and you are the shark who cannot approach the island and this causes deep jealous and repressed feelings of a sexual nature. But then again, sometimes a shark is just a shark."

Jung would say, "Shark! I've just discovered a new archetype. I call it the "Hurleian Shark" in honor of my new patient Hugo Reyes, aka Hurley." (I don't know if Jung ever said "aka" but if he did, I am sure it would sound humorous.)

On the chalkboard behind Hurley, clearly you can see elements of Desmonds mural from the hatch.

Wassupwitthat?

The Sun, the boat, the shark, I mean...did Hurley draw that?

I don't see any connection at all. My son has a drawing on our refrigerator with a sun, island and fish too and he's too young to watch Lost.

I saw this as well, though I don't really think it's fair to call them the same. The two drawings are very different from one another, they just contain a few similar elements (waves, sun, boat).

I do admit that the STYLE of the two drawings are very similar. I believe that Jack Bender painted the original mural and I wouldn't be surprised if he sketched the chalkboard drawing as well.

Either way, the two are far from being the same.

where did I call them the same?

I said you can "clearly see elements of Desmonds mural in the chackboard".

Widmore has a painting in his office that has elements of it as well, but it's not the same mural.

I think that this sketch, Widmores painting and the hatch mural are connected.

Nice! I thought I saw a shark and palm tree. Hurley working out his demons? ;)

Gonna have to watch it again!

It seems TPTB gave us some pretty cool artwork to take a look at in the epi. I think desmonds mural and the chalkboard drawing had some of the same tropical imagery but the one I found most intresting was Hurleys Igloo/ice fishing watercolor:

Kind of reminds me of the two guys that were working for penny in that artic? station?
Anyway I thought the two pieces of artwork that were shown in the mental hospital, one being tropical(Chalkboard drawing) and one being in a very cold climate, vastly different from each other at the least pretty intresting.

Don't know if this is the best place to post this topic, I didn't see it being discussed anywhere else.

Jack Bender is the artist of the mural (see link to the art gallery where you can buy it in the box to the right of the screen). Looks like he did the chalk drawing as well :)

Since TPTB must know that we would catch on to the similarities of the two artwork pieces, it must mean something, right?

Or maybe it's just a red herring :fish:

Your son is also not a character on the show. The parallels in consideration are the chalkboard and the hatch mural. Not a fans refrigerator. .
However the minute you start finding piles of dead birds outside your window,
I would consider your son special.

The chalkboard tells me something: I have to consider that the Sun might be a meteor.

Nuts. I was perfectly happy with my solar flare threat theory too.

Anyone catch what was hanging from the mobile?

Everyone forgets Kelvin was painting on the mural too.... Desmond didn't start the mural, and I am sure neither did former CIA contractor Kelvin......

I can not find a prominent 6, I do however see Matthew Abaddon in the upper right.

I like how the shark is practically eating the sun!

The chalk drawing is pretty abstract like the mural though, but I don't think there's a connection between the two. Maybe it's one of those things they just put in there to make us go off track.

Yeah, looks like some more of Jack Bender's work.

An easter egg for those of us who pay attention to stuff like this.

Is the boat supposed to be the raft that got blown up, and the shark the Dharma Shark? Heh.

Anyone also notice, the huge arrow in Desmonds piece? Roughly pointing at a bearing of 325 degrees? Although I am sure its been brought up.
Also of note is the word: OUT right by the arrow.

It's not Abaddon, it's more likely Yemi; note the priest collar.

In the Enhanced Version the pop-up mentions the drawing on the chalk board, just that it means something.

It is supposed to show the real reason for Abbadon's visit.....I would be scared by Abbadon, too. Run, Hurley, run!

I don't know I just can't picture Hurley standing up drawing a chalk picture in front of everyone. Him sitting down all alone drawing an igloo & an eskimo is more in his character & Hurley's water-painted igloo is much more "artistic" then the chalk drawing.
I don't think Hurley drew the chalk drawing on the board.
So that leads to the question; then who did? If it was one of the other patients at the hospital then who? Will they go back in another episode & will we see who else may be there? Or was it the dude who "saw" dead Charlie? Who was that guy? Did we see his face?
Perhaps this is leading the OP in another direction, but as far as the similarities to the mural in the Hatch I do see that. But of course leads to another question. Who painted the mural in the hatch? Lostpedia says Desmond, but did he really? If he did when & how did we find out? A long time ago I thought it was Claire's Baby daddy. But I can't recall why other than the paintings are similar to Thomas'

Are these similar to Thomas' drawings also?

We don't see the guy who told Hurley something to the effect that "that guy is staring at you" & it was dead Charlie. All we see his a colorful plaid robe.

Does anyone have a better screen shot of that guy?
