View Full Version : Mornin Drinking
Like father, like son. Jack starts his day with a bit of cable news, Orange juice, and a bit of Vodka to steady his hand. As we see in the FF, Jack has become a full blown oxy junkie, boozy eyed, fully bearded crazy. What happened when he left that island. Did anyone else notice that playing horse against Hurley, his suit was straight out of Walmart, and rather unkempt. He's lost it.
lostlocke 02-01-2008, 12:51 PM I guess when they first got back home Jack was still okay for the time being even though he was drinking in the morning. It looked like he went back to work for at least a little while and fell back into some form of normality. As time goes on I think everything must have just started eating him up inside and he really loses it.
mosdl 02-01-2008, 02:36 PM Perhaps seeing a dead person appear to him is what will trigger his quest to go back to the island?

That's just what I was thinking. Maybe it's just a matter of time before the Oceanic 6 get to have some sort of spectre/manifestation come for a visit from the island. Maybe it's a representation of whatever lie they tell when they get back.
Claudia815 02-03-2008, 07:01 AM I just saw that the Lostpedia article makes the same mistaken assumption that we all made, that this takes place in the morning. I've been shown the error of my ways so I thought I'd share this vital piece of info that will make us reconsider everything we've seen on the show so far. :p
It's not morning, unless Jack is in the habit of going out at the crack of dawn, fully dressed in his daper doctor outfit then coming back to his apartment and having a screwdriver for breakfast. Jack has a drink after work, he comes home, leaves his jacket on the chair and his keys on the counter.
Like I said, absolutely crucial revelation there. The point of the screwdriver was to show us that Jack is not as well adjusted after the rescue as he would appear at first glance and he's on his way to becoming a suicidal alcoholic. I guess the only thing that changes is that he doesn't drink before he goes to work, but after his work day is over.

It could be in the morning, people get dressed in a suit and tie in the morning because they have to go to work. Jack was working at St. Sebasitian and Doctors do wear suits to work. I'm assuming that he took his father's old job, but admittedly I could be wrong about that. I think its important that he is downing an orange juice and vodka in the morning because it shows the developing nature of his problem it's not as bad as in TTLG but the seeds of the collapse of Jack are shown in his on island behavior in TBOTE and in the flash forward when he yells at Hurley we're never going back. The Jack in this flash forward hasn't faced the guilt of leaving people behind so he's dealing with it by drinking.

If you remember the scenes in TTLG, there is a new Chief of Surgery, Rob. That was Jack's fathers' position.
Jack Sawyer 02-03-2008, 04:52 PM It's a tough call. It really could be morning or night...but if you think of it from Hurley's standpoint, it's probably more likely to be in the afternoon that whatever ungodly hour Jack needs to get up for work.
Also, in the HORSE scene, what is Jack's job there, exactly? It sounds different, and I agree that it's a cheap suit. Jack seemed downgraded. Sure he'd been through a divorce but on a doctor's salary he could afford a better apartment than that, you'd think. Hurley said he's "back doing surgical stuff" for the "Consule." Guess Jack wasn't working for a time, perhaps he did something different.

I was led to believe he said he was there (at Santa Rosa) for a CONSULT.....maybe one of the mental patients needed surgery
But I also got the feeling he was just using that comment as an excuse...that he really wanted to see Hurley ( after the car crash/arrest) and get a sense of how he was and IF he had told anyone anything

flyer61055 02-03-2008, 05:09 PM I assumed it was morning and that Jack was getting ready to leave for work. The car chase Jack was watching live on television was in daylight and the produce market Hurely drove through appeared to be setting up for the day and add in the cop offering him a donut (all bad cop jokes aside) during the interrogation and I think we're supposed to believe it was morning and Jack is having screwdrivers for breakfast to show us he's already slipping.

Yes, but TTLG was after TBOTE and Jack was more together in TBOTE. In the time between we don't know what occurred as Jack collapsed. Given the celebrity of the Oceanic 6 and Jack's skills as a surgeon he might have been given his father's old position, because someone from the hospital might have thought it was good publicity to make Jack chief of surgery. And Rob in TTLG introduced himself as the new head of surgery, and we know from TBOTE that Jack went back to work at the hospital and when Rob introduced himself to Jack it was as if Jack hadn't been there in a long time. So perhaps Rob took Jack's old job when his breakdown impeded his ability to perform his job.
axpo23 02-03-2008, 05:22 PM Does it really matter if it was morning or afternoon? It's 5:00 somewhere. lol. Seriously, this was the beginning of the end for Jack. If he was going to the mental hospital for a consult in the pm, he was still technically working, just as if he was drinking before he went into the hospital. Either way, it's to show that something had already started to happen to Jack and he was going to be like his old man.

Great point! I'm sure the writers thought the Viewers would assume (you know what assume does) it was in the morning, but it probably wasn't. Now that you mention it, seeing the freeway chase scene shot, the opposite side of the freeway is not busy at all, and in LA having been there many times for business, in the mornings it's gridlock. That being said it's probably not around 4 pm either, but maybe mid afternoon, maybe 2 pm? Seeing how Jack puts his coat on the couch makes it seem like he just arrived home. And the amount of Vodka he put in the OJ? Not very much at all, and it's not like Jack didn't drink before The Island, he was having drinks when he met Ana Lucia. I think it was when he arrived home.
I also had the same thought about his suit, that it looked so generic and cheap. More like something Randy Nations would wear!

:hesaid: It doesn't matter for Jack (the intent was to show that he is becoming an alcoholic and Hurley's words scare him because he knows it's true... that hasn't changed), I'm just OCD and often the timing of things drives me crazy. I would love a nicely set out detailed timeline from Gregg Nations cause it often boggles the mind. Take all the trekking to the cockpit and around the Island in this episode. In earlier seasons, it used to take them a lot longer to trek through various points on the Island. Now they come and go covering the same amount of ground in the same night/day.
I don't know what you guys saw, all I saw was Jack looking gorgeous. :3: But he's now single, he's not gonna live in his former comfy house that reminds him of Sarah. He's never been a creature of comfort and he doesn't actually live there anyway, he lives at St.Sebastian with his insane hours. I don't even remember if this is a spoiler or not, but anyway... The Oceanic 6 have made a deal. Jack is part of the Oceanic 6. He got a golden pass, but I'm pretty sure that's not all they got, it surely included a lot of money, not that money was ever a problem for him before, what with rich people flying across the world to benefit from his surgical skills.
Dan Clancey 02-03-2008, 06:22 PM I think the produce market gives away the time of day... Early morning before work for me. Anything that says the time on the TV news?
