This might seem like a dumb question, but how did Locke know about "Not Penny's Boat", which he referred to when he encountered Hurley near Jacob's Cabin? I must have missed the simple detail.

View Full Version : How did Locke know about Charlie? rabidranger 02-01-2008, 12:41 AM This might seem like a dumb question, but how did Locke know about "Not Penny's Boat", which he referred to when he encountered Hurley near Jacob's Cabin? I must have missed the simple detail. Andromeda Irulan 02-01-2008, 12:43 AM I'm thinking he might have conferred with Jacob who likely knows everything that goes on on the island. rabidranger 02-01-2008, 12:44 AM I'm thinking he might have conferred with Jacob who likely knows everything that goes on on the island. That's what I was thinking. I wanted to make sure there wasn't a more mundane answer. stevenscorsese 02-01-2008, 12:46 AM I took it to mean we caught that scene in the middle of Locke and Hurley's conversation. Off-screen, Hurley had told Locke what he knew and we were introduced into the scene as Locke was replying to it. I'll have to watch it again to make sure. wolffootball37 02-01-2008, 12:48 AM I took it to mean we caught that scene in the middle of Locke and Hurley's conversation. Off-screen, Hurley had told Locke what he knew and we were introduced into the scene as Locke was replying to it. I'll have to watch it again to make sure. I assumed that too because they both wee sitting down by the fire as if they had been there for a while. rabidranger 02-01-2008, 12:49 AM Midstream conversation-wise makes sense. Good call. Distress Signal 02-01-2008, 12:55 AM Locke knew this information long before Hurley or even Charlie knew. Why else would he kill Naomi? He's been saying that the people on the boat aren't who they say they are, and urged Jack not to make that call. Walt must have told him in the pit. emmaAmethyst 02-01-2008, 07:17 AM I don't think Hurley & Locke had a chance to debrief, during the commercial break. Looked to me like they'd just sat down. Locke was just pulling out the water bottle for Hurley, & the fire in the foreground was just a torch stuck in the ground. "You got yourself good & lost out here" sounds to me more like an opening comment, rather than a change of topic after the full status report. Locke's good at lurking around in the jungle, so he could have seen Hurley with the rest of the group before Hurley got separated. But I think it's mysterious how Locke knew about Desmond's report about Charlie. Laurieg 02-01-2008, 08:19 AM I would guess Lock is on a first name basis with Jacob now. Anyone notice Lock seemed to be completely healed from his bullet wound, yet Naomi died from her knife wound. My best guess is Lock has an inside track to everything going on now. hiltop 02-01-2008, 09:00 AM emma, I just assumed he was lurking and overheard it too. But, Jacob could have told him as well. I don't remember him ever knowing who Penny was. Did he have a conversation with Des about who Penny was before now? If he overheard "Not Penny's boat" why would that mean anything to him? Jacob would have had to have explained alot. Death by Smoke 02-01-2008, 09:59 AM Locke's all knowing powers have to come from somewere. It is probably skeptical to assume that he gets ALL of his special powers from Jacob. Cluck 02-01-2008, 10:20 AM Locke and Hurley were together for a while. When they were walking to catch up, Hurley probably filled him in. I think Hurley would have said something or looked at Locke weird or something if he hadn't told Locke about Charlie's message LeslieBN 02-01-2008, 06:51 PM Did anyone else find it odd that Locke, who ever since the showdown with Jack at the Tower has not interacted with anyone, somehow knew about Charlie's death. He even knew about the "Not Penny's Boat" written on his hand: LOCKE: You got yourself good and lost out here, Hugo. How did you get separated from the group? HURLEY: I just, fell behind I guess. LOCKE: Is that why you were shouting for help? HURLEY: I got scared. LOCKE: What Desmond said happened down in that station, “not Penny's boat”. Are you sure that's what Charlie wrote on his hand? HURLEY: Jack should never have called those people. LOCKE: I couldn't agree more. HURLEY: Its gonna be hard, to talk them into thinking they're not coming here to rescue us. LOCKE: Well, we're just gonna have to try our best, Hugo. Because if we can't take em out of it, then Charlie died for nothing. Locke could never know about any of that because as far as we know, he hasn't talked to anyone. Yet, he does know. Thoughts? LockeRocks815 02-01-2008, 07:11 PM Here is what I think... Seems Hurley and Locke had been sitting there for a few mintues and Im sure Hurley spilled the beans to Locke about what happened with Charlie. I was going to say Locke could have been eaves dropping on one of the groups, but I think Hurley would have looked a little confused as to how Locke knew all that information. duckab234 02-01-2008, 07:19 PM ...the same reason everyone knows Locke blew up the submarine, despite not being at the barracks when it happened... off-screen word of mouth. an old trick to avoid having to rewrite extraneous dialogue and make sure characters are on the same page. LeslieBN 02-01-2008, 07:41 PM My bad. I had to go through the screencaps - I didn't realize they went from Hurley on his back (when he spotted Locke), to both of them sitting and chatting. I thought Hurley was still on his back when Locke started talking about Charlie. So yeah I suppose there could have been some dialogue in there. Stuz1 02-02-2008, 12:58 AM Can anyone explain how Locke was aware that Charlie had died when he was talking to Hurley. We never saw Locke down at the beach or in communication with any other survivors before Hurley. So how did he know bumpygrimes 02-02-2008, 01:00 AM I re-watched the episode today, and it appeared as if Locke and Hurley had been talking for a few minutes during the commercial break. The show picked up halfway through their conversation. Bella 02-02-2008, 01:00 AM When I re-watched the episode today, I wondered the same thing... maverick9six 02-02-2008, 01:04 AM Maybe Walt or Jacob clued Locke in... sawyer101 02-02-2008, 01:10 AM Can anyone explain how Locke was aware that Charlie had died when he was talking to Hurley. We never saw Locke down at the beach or in communication with any other survivors before Hurley. So how did he know And the anwser is= Hurley told Locke about Charlie's death and about "Not Penny's boat" couldn't you tell from this line by locke "are "you" sure that's what charlie wrote on his hand" meaning hurley told locke simple. . Flotsam 02-02-2008, 01:14 AM ...it appeared as if Locke and Hurley had been talking for a few minutes during the commercial break. The show picked up halfway through their conversation. bumpygrimes called it. Locke asked Hurley if Desmond was certain that Charlie wrote "not Penny's boat" on his hand. Locke and Hurley had been discussing Charlie's death when we (the viewers) joined them. heppamies 02-03-2008, 07:16 AM Logical simple explanation: After John threw the knife at Naomi, he then started to walk back to the beach. He sees them there talking what has happened in the Looking Glass. Instead of revealing himself, he decides to follow the bunch when they leave for the radio tower. This is how he catches up to Hurley in the jungle, and they walk the rest of the way together. |
