Hello everyone, I was wondering why Desmond presumably stayed at the beach and did not go with Sayid and Juliet? He is just as much of a fighter as Sayid, so I was wondering why he stayed behind. Possibly to help protect the other survivors at the beach I suppose, but I was hoping for some of your thoughts. Thanks so much.

Well I don't know that he is as much a fighter as Sayid. I think we've seen in the past that he generally stays on the sidelines unless he thinks there is something that only he can offer to the situation. He jumped into the fray when he was trying to stop future events from happening...or when he had a specific vision...but he's yet to be one of the losties who's always the first to go 'missions'. When there is a chance for people to be in a search party, or go on fact-finding missions...It's always Jack, Sayid, Kate and formerlly Locke when he wasn't on the outs that have the desire to volunteer. Sometimes Sawyer goes, but that's generally so the audience will have some comic relief and snarky comments to break up the dour mood ;) Not that Desmond's not brave...he's just not the super joiner volunteer guy...yet...

Yea, you make a lot of good points there. Desmond is my favorite character, and I just don't want the wirters to forget about him, because if and once the freighter people meet him, they will know he was not on the flight manifest as well. I can't wait to see how everything unfolds.

Desmond knows it wasn't Penny's boat, but he saw Penny on the monitor in the Lookingglass Station. Perhaps he hopes to find a way to her, even if the freighter wasn't sent by her. A potential means of getting off the Island is better than none.

Yes that's true. I should have phrased what I said differently because I didn't mean he wasn't physically strong or prone to fighting at times...just that he doesn't seem to be the guy who sees the first sign of trouble and grabs a gun, volunteers to go into the jungle to see what's going on. Sayid is ALWAYS getting people organized and going on missions...maybe it's the soldier in him ;). We haven't seen Desmond decide whether or not he's part of that 'let's get a team together' crew yet.

Des is staying behind because he's not 100% sure it's not Penny's boat. Even if it's not getting off the island will get him back to Penny.

I'm actually quite anxious to see Des meet the 4 from the freighter. I'm sure he'd like to know why Naomi had his photo!

Maybe Desmond didn't go with Sayid and Juliet because those two didn't include anyone. You know maybe their idea was a spurr of the moment thing and they just took off?
