View Full Version : Freighties Individual Motivations & Purposes
BaileySalinger 02-08-2008, 01:33 AM In lostpedia it says Black Rock was carrying Gold back in exchange for slaves but obviously it never made it. We saw Miles use to his ability to talk to ghost to get money. Maybe Miles is there to find out where it is or find out where something even more important is. Maybe someone from that ship is buried with something.
My other theory would be to talk to dead dharma or Jacob
I think the whispers will make sense soon.
Pricei 02-08-2008, 01:22 PM we know that she is after dharma, she knew that it was a polar bear and didnt seem suprised when she found the collar.
maybe she is a relative of one of the original dharma folk,
i think she knew who ben is but seemed shocked when he gave all her info out
she was born in kent then growing up in "bromsgrove" (well thats what i heard) the bromsgrove i know in the uk is only about 10 minute drive from where i live redditch and its in worcestershire which is not far from birmingham kent is nowhere near there its about 200+ miles away.
MatthewAbaddon 02-08-2008, 03:55 PM Seems to me that the flashbacks last night were all to set-up the individual motivations and purposes for each of our identified freighties.
Charlotte is obviously familiar with Dharma
Naomi we now know works with/for Abaddon
Lapidus has guilt over not making his flight and has curiosity because he knows the body in the water wasn't the real pilot that flight
Now, I am still unclear on Faraday (his unexplained sadness while seeing the news), but I think I have an idea with regards to Miles.
We know he speaks with the dead and many have stated that his purpose on the 'team' is to do just that. But what dead is he meant to speak to and why? I have a theory on this that I wanted to put out there for you all to tear apart :)
It's been a while so nobody may have thought about it.... "Help Me". Isn't that what Jacob said to Locke? What if Jacob decided to look off-island for his help and this is Miles's real motivation and purpose there? If Jacob is 'undead', he could have found Miles and is hoping that he brings the cavalry to help him.
I know that when Locke told Ben last season that Jacob said "help me", I got the impression that Ben was offended or upset at those words being subversive. Is Ben holding Jacob hostage and could the purpose for the freighties be, in part, to free Jacob?
Feel free to provide other ideas for each freighties motivation & purpose or just rip mine apart :)
czardingus 02-08-2008, 04:24 PM I am under the assumption that Abbadon knows more about the island, Dharma, and Ben than any of the team members. We got a sense of why Miles and Faraday are there - Miles special abilities are apparent, and Daniel's inexplicable crying and light sensing seems to indicate some "special" talents...plus he's a physicist. While Lapidus has not shown any unusual talents thus far, an argument can be made that, as long as they need a pilot, it might as well be the dude who already knows that there is something amiss with the wreckage. Co-opt him and eliminate the chance he goes public.
But why Charlotte? Does she have some special ability yet revealed? Was the wad of money she had in Tunisia from Abbadon or his organization; if so, Abbadon may not know as much about Dharma as I had assumed and has been using Charlotte all along.
One promising scenario about Charlotte being on the island: what would a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Oxford University say if she saw the 4-toed statue, or the temple that the rest of the Others fled to? She could be the source of answers to a lot of our questions about the island...go Charlotte!
woland 02-08-2008, 04:38 PM I got the impression that Charlotte wasn't on the same page as her team members. She seemed to genuinely believe that they were there to rescue the losties or she is good actor. She seems interesting, I hope she breaks the British=evil rule of most hollywood productions.
Obviously, Charlotte is with the freighties because if she wasn't, the writers would have to come up with some other way to get her on the island.
Seriously, though, when she went to the polar bear dig, she said something like "you can't keep something like this a secret in our line of work" I think she is probably the freightie with the closest connection to Abbadon's group, wether that be the DI or something else.
Colonel Sanders 02-08-2008, 06:04 PM She's there because of her expertise as an anthropologist. I got the impression at least....plus we have the 4 toe statue and other goodies to explore.
lostforumdefector 02-09-2008, 12:35 AM I was also wondering about their motivation, but I had different questions.
Daniel cried when he heard that 815 was found with no survivors.
Charlotte felt compelled to read every account of the discovery, in every language.
Frank was supposed to be the pilot, and obviously feels some guilt that his friend went down in his place.
Miles -- I can't recall and I haven't re-watched it yet -- was he listening to an account on the radio when he pulled up at the old woman's house?
At least 3 of the 4 Freighties had some kind of emotional connection to Flight 815 and the discovery of the wreckage.
So why do they all seem so disinterested in the actual survivors of the wreck? Clearly, they did not come seeking the survivors, (although I am not ready to believe that Ben is their only target). What connection did they have with Flight 815 -- and why is that connection clearly severed?
woland 02-09-2008, 12:43 AM I can't even guess what they're motives are but they're not all going to be the same.
stayinglost 02-09-2008, 12:53 PM Has anyone thought about the freighties each have a reason to be on the island other than working for Abaddon? Like Frank knowing that the pilot in the news clip was not the "real" pilot and wanted to find the survivors because he feels guilty about not being the pilot that day. Charlotte knows alot about dharma and has been on their trail for sometime ( she knew right where to look for the dharma colar and wasn't suprised to find a polar bear in the desert). Miles... (this may be far fetched but...) maybe he had a dead relative or something like that who was Dharma and he knows that Ben killed them. Maybe the dead haunt him! LOL Then Frank seems really fragile... maybe he was in the institution with Harley and Libby. Possibly connected to Libby and thats why he was so upset about the news clip and the wreckage being found. Just an idea.
I searched to see if this has been brought up before but couldn't find it anywhere. Sorry if it has already been mentioned. I am still fairly new to posting.
dacheedster2690 02-09-2008, 05:49 PM Charlotte knows alot about dharma and has been on their trail for sometime ( she knew right where to look for the dharma colar and wasn't suprised to find a polar bear in the desert).
I think you hit the nail on the head for Charlotte.
The main reasons why the freighters are there is to learn more about the island, its history and unique abilities.
I think Miles is there because he can apparently talk to dead or invisible people. I predict that Jacob and him will be spending some time together later.
Faraday is a physicist and would offer vast amounts of information about the island dynamics. There is no branch of science more universal and applicable to what happens on the island then physics.
Lastly the pilot is there simply to get on and off the island.
