Locke and company held all the cards at the time. He already had Miles, so he gained nothing by letting Sayid and Charlotte go.

I've got a feeling we haven't been let in on what Sayid traded in return...

Well, Locke had already said that they questioned Miles, so Locke already had him. I'm sure after we have time to watch it again and ponder it, we will figure out what was traded.

I don't think this is true. Locke is very smart and I believe he knows that he will need the whole "army" eventually if they are to defaet the freighties. So as an act of good faith he had to give up something but was able to keep Miles.

He told Lapidus and Jack that, but as someone else noted...Miles was already held captive by Locke at that point. Not much of a trade for Locke there.

I'm thinking Sayid gave John some information or promised to get info to John somehow.

Perhaps that's why Sayid ends up working for Ben off the island...as part of his "trade" with Locke. He helps keep the island a secret from the outside world, since John clearly wants to stay there and not be found.

Actually, Locke had them ALL captured, not just Miles, and he didn't have to let Sayid go let alone Charlotte. I think he definitely traded Miles for Charlotte and the right to come back to the helicopter. Sayid left the island, what would he be doing for Locke now? Locke doesn't want to leave

Yeah, perhaps it all boils down to Miles, after all, how perfect is that? Now Miles is more likely to be around when they find Jacbo and that teleporting(?) cabin.

I am just going off of theory but Locke and Sayid are capable of working out some plans. Lost would not be a good show if it revealed the plan all at once. Yes we Locke come in with Iced Tea and a nice sit down chat. Sayid also told Locke that he too does not trust the people from the freighter. Sayid and Locke both see reason and will work together to protect the two groups. We saw Sayid come back with Charlotte and without Miles. I can assume that is all a part of the plan. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Kate had to be involved someway. Do you think she really just decided to stay? What if Sayid told Locke he could have Miles AND Kate and then just left with Charlotte and told Jack that Kate decided to stay?

Sayid made a deal with Frank that if he could bring Charlotte back, he would be able to go to the freighter. And right after he and Locke talk about Ben's man on the boat, Sayid said he would give Locke something in return for Charlotte. It makes me think the trade was that Sayid is going to the freighter to spy on them.

Yeah, I got the feeling that Kate hadn't really "decided" to stay.

Good point. Sayid hasn't decided what to think about the frieghties yet, so perhaps he agreed to return and share information with Locke.

What if Sayid promised to attempt to prevent anyone else from leaving the Island after he flew off? You know, maybe blow up the helicopter.

And with the strange time effects, could be that the spy Ben was talking about on the freighter before Sayid got to the Barracks and learned about the spy on the freighter, was well... um... Sayid.

My take on the scene is that Sayid allowed the eager Miles to join the expedition because Sayid, from the start, intended on using the trade to obtain Charlotte so that he could get a seat on the helicopter. Certainly, Sayid has suspicions about the freighties, and in a sense he is aligned with Locke. All Sayid had to do is persuade Locke that, by going to the boat, he could learn more about the intentions of the freighties. Locke continues to hold a hostage, and Sayid can learn more about the enemy.

Sayid, on the boat, may never be able to report back to Locke about the intentions of the freighties, but if the freighties are bad, as Locke believes, then only good could come of having Sayid (who's already risked his life to protect his fellow Losties) on the freighter. Sayid presented Locke with a win-win situation. Locke gets to keep a hostage and allows Sayid to go back to the helicopter with Charlotte with the hope that the frieghties keep to the deal (the exact wording of the deal..lol).

This is the diplomacy Sayid was talking about--he wasn't going to sweet talk Locke out Charlotte---for Locke to give up having any hostages would be foolish.

i agree, i know sayid left myles and that seems like the logical explanation of what he traded, but that explanation seems to simple to me. i think there was quite a bit more to sayid's trade, and it may have involved kate. but then, i ask myself, why would like want kate? i remember, of course, that's kate's main value to ben was as a pawn to manipulate jack. might not locke be up to something similliar?

I agree, Miles was the trade. But as well all know, Locke already had Miles, so the trade had to be more about giving Locke much needed information about Miles. Now, Miles has the ability to communicate with the dead and Locke has been receiving visions from Walt and others...perhaps Sayid let him know this information? Or, perhaps he gave Locke info about the mysterious bracelet...

That could be a HUGE BINGO! After all Sayid is working with Ben in his fast foward....

I think Sayid gave Locke Ben's secret room and that info that Ben probably can go on and off the island. That also might lead to Sayid working for Ben at some point, or Sayid being the spy on the boat that Ben talked about. I think Ben somehow can get on and off the island. Whether its from some time loop or a secret way off besides the submarine? Who knows.

I felt that he traded Jack.

Sayid knew that we he came back without Kate, Jack would go after her.

Sayid traded Miles and also the promise he would spy on the freighter for Locke, I think. There's no reason for Kate to be involved. She has no value in this war of freightie information.

Especially since

Locke banishes her in the very next ep, so I don't think he ever felt the need to keep her there against her will. Apparently she takes Sawyer up on his offer and I believe she genuinely decided to stay, just as Sayid said she did.

I thought all along that was the motive for Sayid. To be a spy for Locke and company. Sayid said he does not trust the Freighties either, so he is playing them as interested in getting off the island to get inside and really know what is going on and the motives behind those on the freighter. Good planning between Sayid and Locke!
