View Full Version : Ben is the good guy???
MinnieVanMommie 02-14-2008, 11:04 PM Does it seem to anyone else that after that final sceen, we can agree that Sayid and Ben are the good guys? Remember we all talked about murder for the greater good....The people they are after are the "bad" guys....They are protecting the island....They are protecting a great secret...not just the people on the island...but the island and its magic itself......
Only 6 made it off...the rest are living in Utopia and Sayid and Ben are protecting them
adr55555 02-14-2008, 11:06 PM I'm on board with that idea. Ben will seem like a very different character from now on.

Well Ben has always said They're(the others, him) are the good guys!!!!!!!!!!!
I dunno.........I can't trust Ben.........even if he motives are "good" Im sure he was still sneaky & manipulative in getting Sayid to work for him......
Diesels Blitz 02-14-2008, 11:25 PM The good guys vs. bad guys discussion has been heavily debated before. You might have opened another can of worms with this one judging by how those debates went.
The way I see it is this: it will differ from person to person, depending on their individual perspective. I have faith that they are doing things for the "greater good", whatever that may be. I think once we finally know what the "greater good" is that more people will look at them as the good guys, but you will still have those that don't think their actions were justified, no matter what the outcome. Like I said earlier, it's a matter of personal perspective.
As for me, yes, I think they are the good guys. But that's just my opinion.
MinnieVanMommie 02-14-2008, 11:55 PM many of my old threads were based on the Others are good....yada yada...
Yeah I say the others were working on that Utpoia....I say they needed to keep peace and worked on that in strange ways.....Murder for the greater good...but than again most of our survivors killed for the greater good...
axpo23 02-15-2008, 12:02 AM Yeah, maybe.
I just can't see Sayid joining Ben unless it was for the greater good. Sayid could snap Ben in half in seconds if he wanted to, but there has to be a bigger reason he's with him.
MinnieVanMommie 02-15-2008, 12:27 AM agreed....Sayid has his head screwed on pretty tight...and genuinely feels his emotions...I cant see him joining the 'bad" guys at this point in his life...HOWEVER,,,another poster pointed out in a thread that those that have returned...havent done much different in their flash backs and their flash fowards....He was a ruthless killer before...he is a killer now
Eight 02-15-2008, 12:30 AM Actually I have felt certain -- ever since TTLG -- when Ben said they were not who they say they are and that they want to kill everyone that Ben and the others are the good guys.
Kate731 02-15-2008, 12:31 AM Interesting theory.
I've always thought there was more to Ben's "we're the good guys" comment. If his motives really are for the greater good though, it would make sense for him to reveal them a bit more often (except that that would kill a lot of mysteries on the show.)
I need to watch that scene again, cause I was kind of reeling from the shock of seeing Ben and I missed much of the dialogue.
MinnieVanMommie 02-15-2008, 12:32 AM I have battled with the others are good for a good few years now...great coffee break discussion at work.....
LostMyMarbles 02-15-2008, 12:38 AM agreed....Sayid has his head screwed on pretty tight...and genuinely feels his emotions...I cant see him joining the 'bad" guys at this point in his life...HOWEVER,,,another poster pointed out in a thread that those that have returned...havent done much different in their flash backs and their flash fowards....He was a ruthless killer before...he is a killer now
Sayid was not a killer in his previous life. He was a soldier and a torturer. He murdered only when he was put in an impossible bind (he killed his commanding officer and committed treason to save Nadia's life). On the island, he killed without remorse because he was a soldier at war.
Cardielost 02-15-2008, 12:42 AM Ben is probably the lesser of two evils as far as the economist and his cronies are concerned, but that doesn't mean he isn't still plenty evil.
Cardie
toddintexas 02-15-2008, 12:43 AM Yes, much debate could go into that question, depends on how we define good. Are they protecting the island which actually would be beneficial to all? Then by definition they are the "good guys". But that doesn't make them good "people" or a "decent" person. Good People or decent people will give you an explanation when they kidnap your son and leave you for dead, or torture you, or have you kill 2 people in cold blood, not too mention treat you humanely. No matter what happens, I'll always hate Ben, that's why I can't stand that Sayid is working with him, but like Micheal, I sure hope he's being coerced.
Willemite 02-15-2008, 07:23 AM Are Ben and Sayid truly, honestly in league? Isn't it possible that Ben has misled Sayid into his actions? That is something at which he excels. What are the crimes against which they seek revenge? Are they real, or did Ben convince Sayid of whatever in order to get him to do his dirty work?
Damian254 02-15-2008, 07:47 AM Yeah I gotta agree with an earlier post ... there are good guys in the terms of black of white. Ben is more like gray ... a very idealistic person, but willing to resort to any tactic to achieve his goal.
But if there's a good guy on the show ... I do believe it's Ben.
MinnieVanMommie 02-15-2008, 08:46 AM Sayid was not a killer in his previous life. He was a soldier and a torturer. He murdered only when he was put in an impossible bind (he killed his commanding officer and committed treason to save Nadia's life). On the island, he killed without remorse because he was a soldier at war.
Reguadless, he still killed in those impossible binds.....we dont know what the binds are that he is in now....Killer before, killer now....As the torturer, I am sure there were times when he just killed someone upon frustration?
Are Ben and Sayid truly, honestly in league? Isn't it possible that Ben has misled Sayid into his actions? That is something at which he excels. What are the crimes against which they seek revenge? Are they real, or did Ben convince Sayid of whatever in order to get him to do his dirty work?
Very interesting....I just dont see Sayid being someone easily manipulated
Aggie00 02-15-2008, 08:52 AM I don't see Ben as being evil. He is trying to protect something that is good and pure from those on the outside who want to take advantage of it. That was probably the main reason he was involved in "The Purge" of the Dharma initiative revealed in Season 3. Dharma was there to study the island and take advantage of its properties and Ben came to realise that this was not right.
As for Sayid and Ben being together at the end, that was a "Umm, come again now?" moment. Before Ben showed up, my wife called it. I don't know how she knew, but lo and behold, there he was patching Sayid up. Have to watch that again.
