When Des brought up Penny Widmore there was some awkward faces going around. I took this as evidence that Widmore is a name they know, and more specifically, is the man behind their little expedition.

Thoughts?

Yes I saw the double glance from Frank over to Daniel. That was when I knew that the Widmore name is familiar to them

Agreed. Slowly we are seeing the bigger picture...

Totally. And does anyone else think that there's somewhat of resemblance between Penny, Charlotte and Elsa? (Not to mention Juliet, but that one I'm guessing is just a coincidence.) Charlotte really gives off that wealthy, entitled vibe. I would not be surprised to learn that they're all related.

at first glance when sayid and elsa were in bed together i thought it was a desmond flashback , elsa looked soooo much like penny.

and charlotte totally looks like a country-clubber rich girl.

I definitely think Widmore is very involved in this endeavor, if not the head of the who thing.

A lot of awkward faces going around in this episode and, of course, in this scene. I couldn't discern what the faces meant, other that they knew who Penny was. For all we know, Penny could be a competitor of the freightie's boss. I certainly couldn't divine what Daniel and Lapidus were thinking, specifically.

Yeah, but it seemed to me that they were making the "I don't want to tell..." faces before he even brought up Penny Widmore; the continued glances were just part of the uncomfortable silence, like "I don't know who this widmore chick he's babbling about is, but would he just shut up already?"

Seeing that Penny knew nothing about the boat, (and I'm gonna presume she was telling the truth...) the other freighties would still probably know her name just as Naomi did. I'm suspecting that the business with Penny is a cover story that prevents them from revealing who they really work for. If Penny's been actively searching for Des, then that picture has likely been circulated in multiple places, and so will Penny's name. Whether or not Penny knew enough to connect Desmond to the island, _somebody_ apparently did.. .

But for the freighties to have to actually face the _real_ Desmond from the photo may well be something unexpected that they weren't prepared for. Especially if it was all just a cover story; does this person have or know something that will ruin their cover?

I've been suggesting for some time (more info in the link below) that Ben had a lot of financing behind him based on a number of clues in the story so far, and last night's ep has shown that to be true. I've also given a lot of evidence to suggest that the person financing Ben all along has been Widmore and the person behind the freighter is Paik. (I won't threadjack -- lots of substantiating info further into the thread at the link below.)

In any case, I'll just say that I agree with you on the likelihood that Penny's father is a competitor of the freighties' boss, and that they may (or not!) know it.

I had the same thought process as the OP... they seemed to be thinking, "Widmore, yes. Penny, well..."

Now I've been wondering if the Freighties had that picture so they could identify PENNY (or Desmond and/or Penny). Perhaps Widmore, knowing all about the island and that Des is there, hopes to find his estranged, and maybe errant daughter at the same time he finds Ben. Long shot, maybe, but that's my brain tonight.

Maybe the freighter has been there the whole time. Remmeber Henry Gales ballon with Windmore industries printed on it? Also TPTB at one point said the freighter was not Dharma, soo who else?

Could you please provide a link or something where TPTB said the freighter was not Dharma related?
