I'm fairly certain that Sayid's real target was Elsa all along. I think he was stalling on his job because he had come to care for her. He didn't seem surprised when she shot him and called her associate with an update on his status. I think it's fairly evident that the Economist boss is someone very high in the power structure if not the big boss. Sayid is being sent out to eliminate all the people who work under the Economist and gather information on tracking him down in the process.

I believe she was his real target all along. When Sayid said "my job is proving harder than I thought" or something along those lines...I believe he was talking about Elsa. She was his target but then he fell for her. My My Sayid. You know you can't do that if you want to become a Double O

I interpreted that comment as "I've been waiting weeks for your boss to page you, whats the holdup??"

If Sayid was after her, why didn't he plug her on the first date? (Keep it clean folks!)
I feel like the Economist is Abbadon, and that is who Sayid is trying to locate.

I agree, he told her that she should leave Berlin as people would be asking questions about her bosse's death, he didn't have to wait if it was her, he had several opportunties to kill her.

As for the plugging her on the first date comment, that had me laughing out loud ;-)

The plugging comment is brilliant!

I think that Sayid telling Elsa to leave Berlin is good evidence that Sayid was meant to kill both Elsa and the Economist. He had fallen for Elsa and wanted her to be the good and safe woman that he desired. If she left Berlin, then it would look like she was possibly dead and missing. I think he did fall for her and thus tried to make an allowance for her.

He was waiting for the beeper to go off to follow Elsa to the Economist. Then he would have plugged them both. :)
