Im jumping on the "time" thing bandwagon...I really think that it explains alot!

Well, from what I can guess, the Island is simply unstuck in time. When they hit the borders, it can affect things passing through it, that means the heli and passengers experience it. Daniel created a small machine, but the island is a massive version of it (or was, until Desmond didnt push the button and it blew up. maybe the "2342" at the end of the numbers set the frequency).

That's my guess.

Does the passage of the time on the island differ than the rest of the world? Penny told Desmond she has been searching for him for three years. Wasn't he on the island for one year before the plane crashed? Even with being in the race and all it wouldn't add up to three years? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Desmond has been lost for 3 years. Watch the Season 2 finale again.
Besides, he said he would call her on Dec 24 2004, and he did. That pretty much puts the nail in the coffin of the whole "Slow Time on the Island" theory.

Well it was mentioned that the effects were not "constant" for a lack of a better word. Sometimes the person would jump just a couple of hours back and sometimes they'd jump years. Does that relate in any way to the perception of time between individuals? I don't know, my head is spinning.

well to me it seems that it is the 2004 peeps that travel back in time...no one is traveling deep into the future...
