View Full Version : Movie references in "The Constant"
workingmom 02-29-2008, 12:02 AM How many similarities are there with Back to the Future?
- Desmond is sent by present-time Daniel to his past self at Oxford to get his help
- Desmond tells Prof. Daniel at Oxford the final key to his time-travel machine that's been stumping him (the Flux Capacitor vs. the coordinates and the mhz setting)
- Desmond convinces Prof. Daniel to believe him by telling him about something Future!Daniel had told him - Eloise. (Marty McFly told Doc Brown that he came up with the time travel equation after he bumped his head on the toilet (?))
- Prof. Daniel has terrible hair too!
LostLaura 02-29-2008, 12:03 AM OMG lol all episode I was like "Back to the Future"!!! Marty! Doc!! Ack!
The maze for the rat reminded me of the scaled model of the route the Dolorean would drive.
Electromagnetic Anomoly 02-29-2008, 12:11 AM I thought of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure".. for
a moment.
The part where they are in jail and they say something like,
"remember the car keys" and "remember the trash can".
Which if they remembered to go back in time to plant these
items later they would help them in their current situation,
by appearing.
Kinda have to know the scene to fully understand.
SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RULES!!!!!!
100%
I think this thread ties into the thread (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=90391) I brought up as well.
Good observations!
just jack 02-29-2008, 12:12 AM Yes! My favorite movie! you pretty much nailed all the similarities I could think of.
But this is kind of a parallel too: Daniel warned his future self that Desmond would be his constant kind of like Doc deciding to read Marty's letter from 1955 that warned him about the shooting in 1985.
This is my first post. It seems that only Michael J. Fox can bring me out of lurkerdom.
LockeLove 02-29-2008, 12:32 AM I kind of wanted him to pull out the pic of him and Penny and have one of them start to fade away ..
MarineOne 02-29-2008, 12:44 AM I kind of wanted him to pull out the pic of him and Penny and have one of them start to fade away ..
LMAO Good call! That would have sealed the deal!
Electromagnetic Anomoly 02-29-2008, 12:56 AM Good one!
I thought of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=90399)..

Jealous_Guy 02-29-2008, 01:38 AM We have the whole radiation suit thing too, although Faraday's looks nothing like a Devo costume :D
rebelscum 02-29-2008, 01:40 AM Faraday is played by an actor with extremely similar mannerisms to Michael J Fox's dad in the first BTTF
Electromagnetic Anomoly 02-29-2008, 01:40 AM How cool would it be if Lybians showed up looking for plutonium?!
hahahaaaa.
Actually, they did drive a blue Volkswagon van!!!!!
OMG!!!
for ate fifteen 02-29-2008, 02:34 AM when Des was telling Daniel what calculations to use, i could just picture Doc Brown (from back to the future) saying "1.21 gigawatts!?!!"
they both had the same looks on their faces. the same 'aha moment'.....so to speak.

Great Scott!!!!!!!

Ha! I thought the same thing (flux capacitor).
Good call on the bad hair
:rotflmao2:
duckab234 02-29-2008, 03:07 AM this episode reminded me of Frequency, in how they were communicating with each other in concurrent timelines. and EW or E! just pointed out that kate's lawyer was played by Shawn Doyle, who was the villian in Frequency. his name was Jack Shepard as well. i suspect the Hanso Casting Agency has something to do with this.
Clochard 02-29-2008, 03:12 AM I know!
I was watching with my boyfriend, and when the "enhanced" version said his character's name was Jack Shepard I said I thought that was really weird, and he was like "Weird, I don't get it?!?" - That's what I get for watching this with a non-Lost fan, but regardless, I do find it verrrryyyy interesting to have the same name..
LockeNessMonster 02-29-2008, 03:16 AM Elizabeth Mitchell also co-starred in that movie as a character named "Julia" (nicknamed "Jules").
workingmom 02-29-2008, 08:46 AM Yes!
Welcome to the Fuse, just jack! Heck of a week to start posting - have fun!
That notation in Daniel's notebook is like Marty's letter to Doc, isn't it?
I kind of wanted him to pull out the pic of him and Penny and have one of them start to fade away ..   Yeah, Des and Penny's picture looked a lot worse for wear every time he pulled it out but so far Penny didn't change back to the original woman in the picture or anything  (Remember in the beginning of S2 they had a different actress posed in the picture, before they cast Sonya Walger. That would have been funny.)
I just think this movie would have been one of Damon's and the other writers' favorites so the similarities are worked in as an homage.
palomino_grl78 02-29-2008, 09:15 AM There were a lot of B2TF similarities. When I saw that Eloise was a rat I imediately thought of "Einstein" the time traveling dog.
I wonder if this means that Desmond is going to break into a mean guitar solo! That would rock!
BuffyMars 02-29-2008, 10:08 AM I was saying that the whole time! And Daniel is soooo McFly!
mikebinos 02-29-2008, 10:26 AM They flew through a lightening storm. I expected them to get struck by lightening and that would cause the time travel. because we all know what a bolt of lightening can do
prospero 02-29-2008, 11:00 AM This is sooo HEAVY, but mayve things are heavier on the island. If I wasn't such a slacker, i would probably know this.
Love Back to the Future, and I said out loud, wow this is just like Marty and Doc when Des went to see Daniel.
fun!
Boone's blue eyes 02-29-2008, 12:13 PM *plays a mad air guitar*
that is awesome....good one!
Electromagnetic Anomoly 02-29-2008, 12:26 PM I think we have seen similar instances in other time
traveling movies, but this scene just jumped out at me.
Madge 02-29-2008, 12:28 PM Heh! Des even travelled in a phone booth!
Electromagnetic Anomoly 02-29-2008, 12:32 PM Heh! Des even travelled in a phone booth!
hahahaaaa.. Party On dudes!!!!
MikeWhitt 02-29-2008, 12:35 PM you guys rock!!
laidback 03-02-2008, 03:02 PM DUDE. Episode blew my mind. Wormholes, space-time continuum, alternative universes, free-will versus determinism -- but boy the movie references.
Nose Bleeds: Butterfly Effect - Every time he tried to change the course of history the main character had severe nose bleeds and similar effects Desmond and others have. Also, I need to rewatch Donnie Darko.
Picking Up Change - Somewhere in Time (Christopher Reeves ironically picks up a Penny which warps him back to the future)
CS Lewis - A Wrinkle In Time
The Phone Booth - Dr. Who and Bill and Ted's Excellent and Bogus Adventures
Lightening Rod Desmond Hume used - Back to the Future (BTW David "Desmond" Hume).
Did Daniel find his constant b/c Desmond visited him in the past thus changing his log midstream (GREAT SCOTT!) allowing him to find his constant as Desmond did?
Wormhole theory and the paradox that comes along with it. Brings us back to the beggining of the end...another paradox. If time is infinitely long and is a human construct, how can something really end? Time and Space are relative some bonehead said once.
Quarks?
Well, maybe TPTB named the show "Lost" b/c I totally spaced during Quantum Mechanics. Don't forget Brief History...
egats.

Meatloaf is behind this mess ehh?
Liplocked 03-03-2008, 06:28 AM :eek2: What.... you guys didn't see Harry Potter?!
Bleeding heck - he was stood large as life in Hogwarts' cloisters in red and gold Gryffindor garb and thick Boy Who Lived specks!
:D I roared (and me a Slyth).
workingmom 03-03-2008, 12:02 PM There were a lot of B2TF similarities. When I saw that Eloise was a rat I imediately thought of "Einstein" the time traveling dog.
I wonder if this means that Desmond is going to break into a mean guitar solo! That would rock! Actually, I thought of Einstein with the watch around his neck in the previous ep (Economist?) when Daniel does his experiment with the missile carrying a clock vs. his own synchronized clock. I bet for the next experiment he'll put Vincent in the return capsule with a clock around his neck!
I was saying that the whole time! And Daniel is soooo McFly! His arm motions when he speaks are George McFly to a T.

I kind of wanted him to pull out the pic of him and Penny and have one of them start to fade away ..
HAHAHA you guys are funny. Yeah that episode had a lot similarities to all these time traveling movies.
Founder 03-03-2008, 01:28 PM Damon said one of the main influences on this eppy was the final episode of Star Trek TNG. Picard just shuffling through time, with the anomoly as the only constant.
