could the whispers be results of time travel...

a few quick examples...

They knew Shannon was going to be shot in Abandoned.

The man Sawyer killed in Australia, Frank Duckett, can be heard in the whispers saying "ill come back around"

Hm, maybe but I'm not sure how it explains the actual phenomenon of the whispering.

Yeah, I posted something like that a few minutes ago (I can't remember which thread though).

Perhaps the whispers are little bits of consciousness (as Daniel shows us is what travels- not the physical body) belonging to people who are on the island in the future and past. They could be anyone (not necessarily the dead). These "bits" are leaking through to the time we are seeing and we hear what they- the consciousnesses are thinking as whispers.

Sorry if this has been brought up. But it has occurred to me what might be causing the whispers after this epi.

The Whispers have been one of the more baffling things from the get go in this show. I'll be simple here and hope everyone else can elaborate or poke holes in it.

Danielle speaks of the sickness. We now know what the sickness is (or at least we think we do). She also spoke of the whispers. Could it be that the whispers are from the minds traveling through time? For those who have the sickness from over the eons?

Seems plausible to me.

I think it's a reasonable question, Bill. Another similar theory that was broached was that, once someone dies from the short-circuiting the goes on with the flashes back and forth (see Minkowski, George), they become 'unstuck' by time themselves and become Whispers.

I'm not sure I agree with either the above theory, or the one that you bring up, but that's more because the Whispers are fascinating and totally over my head. I don't expect to have a concrete answer to who they are until the final episode or two (but that's just me).

I think that your POV is plausible, however --- especially when you consider the dilemma of where does Desmond-in-2004 go during Desmond-in-1996's time travel? Maybe he goes into the ether on the island...maybe he becomes part of the Whispers himself for that period of time.

All interesting questions. Thanks for bringing it up!

Well, if you read the trasnscripts, the whispers are often sentient discussions, and referring somehow to what we are seeing on screen.

I think the whispers will prove out to be psychics, or some other form of paranormal "monitoring" of the island.

Or, ghosts.

When not in your normal frame of consciousness you become a whisper?

Sounds good to me.

But, then, why do the whispers seem to respond to people when they're alone in the jungle? Or is it that at that time, someone is tapping into being unstuck... they are on the edge of the abyss and get pulling back by smokey appearing?

What I mean is this: in previous seasons, whenever someone is alone or in a pair (Kate & Juliet, Sayid & Shannon, Locke...) creepy whispers start happening. Soon after, either smokey appears or someone, a vision of sorts, appears. So people see Smokey or Walt or the Horse or something else that we theorize is an aspect of Smokey.

With that and this theory... the Losties are on the verge of getting unstuck in time during that moment, allowing their current-year consciousness to hear and 'be' part of the whispers. Smokey brings them back to the present. Its a security system to keep people in the here and now.

That's a great theory, I love it.
