View Full Version : Why did Widmore give Desmond Penny's address?

I've been running this over and over again in my mind, and I just can't figure it out.

And what did he really mean when he said he's not the one who hates Des?

I can't believe he was talking about Penny hating Desmond, because hate and heartbreak are two very different things. Also, Widmore clearly doesn't like Desmond - he may not hate him per se, but he definitely doesn't like him. So why would he ever tell Desmond where Penny lives?

struck me as very odd also...........

I expected someone other than Penny to open the door because of his comment

I get the impression that Widmore is simply convinced that Penny now hates Desmond and it doesn't matter if Des sees Penn or not.

He was just saying "sure, go see her. it's futile. she hates you". I don't think his intention was to actually help Des see Penn. I think his intention was to crush Des and destroy any faith he might have in the relationship then and there, thus resulting in Des never bothering to try to see Penn again.

That's just it, though. Widmore isn't a dense fool. Hatred and heartbreak are two different things, on contrasting, extreme sides of the spectrum. There's a chance that Des would go there, and Penny would take him back, because she does love him. She doesn't hate him. Widmore knows that.

Oh, and Penny's adress is 423. 4 and 23 anyone?

I think Mr. Widmore is confident that Penny will not see him. Its just his way of having something over Desmond. He probably feels that it doesn't matter what Des tries to do, Penny will still reject him. Well that's what Widmore thinks anyway. And its probably another way for him to make a fool out of Des.

The whole scene with Widmore (giving the address, leaving the water on, not treating Des like total crap) gave me a weird feeling. Almost looked like ol' papa Widmore had an idea of what was going on.

I understand that, but is he really that much of a fool to think that Penny actually hates Desmond? Anyone would say she doesn't hate him, she loves him, but she is both broken hearted and angry with him. Widmore is an intelligent man. So...who was he talking about when he said, "I'm not the one who hates you"?

maybe Widmore wanted Desmond to see her. Maybe Widmore knew about the EM side effects because he has experienced them or knew about them through Dharma.. He was at an auction buying the diary from the Black Rock, and just maybe he knew Desmond was on the island that was harbouring the Black Rock, and that is his key to finding it???

That's the impression I'm getting, too. But why would Widmore want Desmond to see Penny?

and 42....

I thought Widmore sent him there to see for himself that
Penny was better off without him. I thought I saw a wedding
ring on here.
Can anyone confirm or not?!

Seeing that she was married I figure would let Des know it's over.

Wow...I didn't notice a wedding ring. That would be a huge revelation! I hope someone can either confirm or deny this.

Desmond did enter the sail boat race sponsored by Widmore, and when he turned up missing in that specific area, he began to follow his intuition. I think Widmore knows about the island and that Black Rock is there, but he does not know where it is. As for telling Desmond where Penny is, he knows that Desmond and Penny will meet again after Desmond gets out of the Military (meeting at the track in 2001), and Widmore knows that Penny will still love Desmond...

So by telling Desmond where Penny lives, it will ultimately tell Widmore where Black Rock is or the Island, which ever he is after.

I guess there wasn't any good reason to think this. But for some reason I felt like it was a combination of two things that made Widmore give Des the address. One Penny was upset to the point she wouldn't see him, (ie disconnecting the phone), also he has always thought of Desmond as a weak coward. Giving him the address was almost rubbing in his face he would have to stand up and be a man about it, rather than just talking about it.

Not a lot of supporting evidence, for some reason that's just the impression I got.

When Daddy Widmore sees Desmond at the auction house at first he seems confused but then I think he realizes how Desmond got there. It all goes back to course correction. Desmond has to see Penny because it sets off the whole chain events of him being AWOL, going to prison then going on the sailboat trip to the island. For whatever reason we haven't seen, Desmond must follow this path.

And Penny is wearing a ring but it's not the correct hand, or so I'm told (I can never remember which hand is correct).
