I had a strange theory.
What if Mr. Widmore (I forgot his first name) is like Ms. Hawking. Maybe he knows what Desmond must do.
Examples:
-Not liking Desmond, yet still giving him Penelope's address
-Leaving the water on, almost as if he knows that Desmond will jump
-His boat race around the world
and possibly his dealings with the Black Rock.
There may be more...

Yep... He totally knows something... there was definitely something up with him leaving the water on... that part of the episode was just too peculiar to be insignificant.

At first, I was really scared that Desmond was going to flash forward while going to turn off the water, and fall with his head in the sink and drown - that would have messed up history pretty severely!

Yeh, but I really think that when Faraday said "you cant change the future", that was TPTB telling us that you cant change the future.
But yes, that would've been freakin crazy

This week's podcast with Damon and Carlton is *very* interesting and informative, as they explain their philosophy and the implications of time travel for what we've already seen on the show. It's pretty tame as far as spoilers are concerned, nothing major, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a listen, as it's very interesting.
Basically, what they said regarding time travel on the show is that any contingencies set in motion by time travel on the show would not affect, in any way, what we've already seen. Everything we've seen so far is set in stone... that's what happened, and events set in motion due to time travel won't change them. This is contrasted with time travel as it is portrayed on Heroes and Back to the Future, for example. Their reasoning behind that is they feel to change any previously established story based on time travel would cheat the audience, since we are already invested in that previously established story. So, whether your suspicions that this was a veiled message from the writers about the future not being able to be changed is correct, (I think it is) your hypothesis is true: the previously established story, including FF's, is set in stone.
They explain all that better than I did, though, so give it a listen.
(Also, the stuff I hid behind spoiler tags isn't spoiler-y, per se, but technically - I think - official podcasts are considered spoiler material, so I wanted to be safe and respect the unspoiled.)

Anyone consider the fact that Widmore may not be the heinous dood everyone has made him out to be? I mean seriously if some turd was harrassing your daughter, wouldn't you be on your daughters side... Unless of course you figure that the turd was OK, and might need some help.
