This has to be the only explanation, maybe nano technology type thing sent by Daniel and Co? Anu Ideas folks?

I disagree with this, and I am not at all convinced that this is the only explination. I truly hope this is not the explination.

TPTB have already explained that the monster will not be explained as some kind of nano swarm.

And the time travelling is purely conciousness at this point. Nothing has physically time travelled.

I think the black Monster has more to do with Jacob than it does Ben or Daniel. The Black Monster was there before the Headcase, the Ghostbuster, the anthropologist, and the drunk showed up. Ben and company dont really seem to understand the Smoke Monster (if we believe them), and ole smokey seems to be leading our losties into actions that ultimately help out Jacob......kinda.

Objects travelling through the EM barrier around the Island apparently physically time travel, possibly depending on the path/bearing they take.

ie. The rocket probe on the way in and the helicopter on the way out.

I'm more curious as to why we've seen nothing of the smoke monster lately. We've had a lot of people tromping through the jungle going from the beach to the plane wreckage to the barracks to the helicopter landing, having picnics, you name it and we haven't seen or heard of him.

I think we'll probably see Smokey soon. But how soon?

All I know is that I wanna see Smokey do it's thing to Charlotte. Well, the other freighties too, but I'd like to see her reaction. Either pee her pants scared, or would she stand up to it like Locke and Eko did?:hide:

What's with the Charlotte hate? She doesn't seem so bad.

But yeah, the monster is definitely no nanites. I think people are jumping too quickly to answer all of the series' questions with time travel, when I think it is going to be a lot more complicated than that. Don't forget, we still have 43 episodes to go.

actually, I think the "what is the Monster" mystery is one of the few answers I'm not really worried about.......kinda. Just remember to steer clear of it Hurley!

It should be an interesting scene if Miles comes across old Smokey and is able to read it's "thoughts".

Good, because I have a feeling we're not going to know for quite a while...

WOW, cool idea!! I would love to see that!

Honestly, it would be cool if "Cerberus" was explained, but I won't break down if it's not. It's pretty cool (..mysterious..) as it is. :)

I have a feeling the smoke monster, when at rest, is the ring of gray matter around Jacob's shack. They make a point of showing Locke touching it every time.

You know what? I can't BELIEVE I didn't think of that-- and I can't believe I haven't heard it suggested anywhere else! That's FANTASTIC!

great idea! does kinda suggest nanobots though (i have no problem with that)

Not necessarily, it could just be that that is what it looks like when it's resting. IMO that would explain why it seems to disappear when it isn't attacking people, it simply changes into a ring of non-descript ash.

I think the smoke monster, like the polar bear, somehow connected into the island's wormhole through another wormhole in space.. it's kind of a straggler that got caught in the hole, and now just floats around causing all sorts of fun.

Of course, it was also described as the island's "security system" by Danielle(?), but that may just be her interpretation of it, and not the reality,

I stick by my initial theory that it is unknown technology from the ancient past.

I have always looked at the Smoke Monster as some form of Stephen Kings Langoliers. The Smoke Monster seems to take those that aren't supposed to be there, those who are in the "wrong time".

Frank, the pilot, would only help to confirm that theory since the 815 pilot was killed by Smokey and Frank stated that he was supposed to have piloted 815.

That's a great idea! I really like it!

I hope it makes an appearance soon, too. It's been a while since we last saw it. I wonder why it hasn't showed up yet since new people have arrived on the island....

This is an interesting thought about it...I thought maybe it killed the pilot because he knew the whereabouts of the island, or possibly even it's location.
And I thought Frank said he was the alternate pilot. Maybe I'm wrong though, I saw it only once.

Thanks RodimusBen (and others). Glad someone else can see what I'm thinking. I have thought for quite a while that it could be that good old Smokey is protecting Jacob (in the form of the ash ring) and thus the island. Ben has said they don't know what the smoke monster is. He could be lying but it also could be a secret Jacob is keeping for himself.

We also know that Smokey doesn't like the sonic fence. Seems plausible it's connected to Jacob since he doesn't much care for technology either.

How the darn thing works? I haven't a clue. That's why I love to watch.

I always thought that was gun powder or something, an explosive charge protecting the house. :34853_huh:

but Darlton have specifically said its not a nanoswarm, they made reference to Michael Crichton book Prey, which this is about,
would they lie to us !! lol

I like this idea. It would also explain why it seemed to be killing people after they resolved their issues, because they weren't meant to be there anymore.

I have always thought the Smoke Monster was the Souls of the Dharma Operatives Ben and the Hostiles murdered.

I believe the whispers are the from the Smoke Monster as well.

For me.....its all connected....as far as the light Locke saw and Jacob, I have a whole other idea on that....and believe it or not.....Vincent is a big part of it.

Would that have anything to do with the last Missing Peice?
