Why did Locke have random money in his pocket -- for the Island vending machines?

He got it from Ben's secret room stash.
And when Ben saw the money, he knew the Losties had found his room. That's why Locke gave the money, to let him know his secret room is secret no more...

If Locke had money when the plane crashed, he certainly hasn't anywhere to spend it. It would seem odd that he had it in his pocket 94 days later, though, unless he was planning on making a point.

I would say it is just habit to keep a wallet, even if on the island there is no real need for one. Just some false sense of civilization I would think.

Keeps it on him to get quarters for the Dharma arcade!

He did get a refund on that Australian outback vacation...

Was it Henry Gale's?

Why does he need to carry around money when they're stranded on an island?

Because he's still an American, regardless of where he lives. ;)

Well as for me, especially when I travel, I have money in my pockets or wallet. Sure he doesn't need it, but he has no reasoon to get rid of it either. He just has it.

Nevermind that. It almost seemed to me to be out of character for John.

From 'The Economist':

BEN: I lost a dollar, you know.
SAYID: How did you manage that?
BEN: I bet John that you wouldn’t be stupid enough to fall for your friend as bait.

Locke was giving Ben his dollar back.

i don't credit Locke with that much subtlety, especially when dealing with Ben.I don't think he has a clue about Ben's secret room

Locke was giving Ben his dollar back.Wonder if that was real or metaphorical?

My initial thought was that if you think you're going to be rescued some day (or dragged off the island, in Locke's case), then why wouldn't you keep the money? I'm not going to throw away any money that I may have... nor trust my money or certain other possessions to sit unguarded in a tent on the beach...

From 'The Economist':

Locke was giving Ben his dollar back.

...but I really think that gutsdozer hit the nail on the head with this one!

Someone tipped him after the chicken dinner.

But seriously, it's a dollar... Not too mysterious.

I'm sure he had cash on him when he traveled to Australia.

I wish they would tie this tiny loose end up. You would think that OBVIOUSLY Locke found the room simply because the bookcase was left out by Sayid. But then they have shown Ben and Locke talking a few times now and . . . and . . . no reference to the secret room!

I really thought when Locke went to interrogate Ben this episode he might say, "You know Ben, I found your secret closet, and all these travelling supplies, and money and stuff . . . what's that all about?"

I've read debates on both sides of this, whether he found the room or not. If the room is important, as we are led to believe, then why no mention of it from Locke? Or has it just not happened yet?

I guess the obvious answer to me is that Locke doesn't care about getting off the island at all... and he already essentially knows that they (the Others) can leave the island because of the submarine that he saw (and blew up... LOL).

i think may have been the dollar from the first time he was caught
