What, like a circus or something?
"Step right up! For just $100 you can see John Locke: the incredible Healing man!!!"

Is it just me or did this explanation seem wayyyyyyyyyy too shallow for Lost. I'm going to be severely dissapointed if there isn't more to it than this.

I think this perfectly describes Widmore's personality. I think it's more than just money though. He wants to be recognized as one of the most powerful figures in the world.

We can't believe anything Ben says, about Widmore or anyone...
Ben's a megalomaniac, wants to control and exploit the island for his own purposes, and Widmore's a threat to HIM...

Lots of potential uses for craphole island. Use the 31 minute time gap to game the stock market, make Warren Buffett your Vincent. Employ the magnetic properties to possess the most powerful weapon in the world. Widmore as head of KAOS...

I think that this was just "the short version" of what Widmore is after. This was just a quick way for Ben to explain why Widmore is after them.

Being a true Ben devotee, I think that he was telling the truth about them being "the good guys" and Widmore being the one with evil motives. We probably won't know that details for a long time.

We all had the idea that he was going to open a hotel and hire Ricardo Montalban. The last episode of the series would be them standing on the dock and a little person in a white tux points and says "Look boss! De plane, De plane!"

I don't think Ben was literally suggesting that Widmore would use Locke himself to his advatage. It was an analogy, just a simple way of boiling it down. I'm sure Widmore has much more serious ideas about how he can exploit the island's properties. His plans might even include building a series of bunkers or "stations" around the island to do research on exactly what its capable of.... ;)

From the earliest times, I thought Widmore perhaps was thinking the Island was the fountain of youth, or Shangri La. Turn it into an amusement park, like they wanted to in Jurassic Park. Only, exploit the time as the tourist draw. Widmore could make a fortune.

That's another excellent speculation.

Widmore could be looking for Jacob.

Widmore could be looking for Jacob.

There's another interesting question, who is Jacob, Widmore's parents? Son?
Grandfather? Is Widmore a Hanso? Questions, questions.......
