View Full Version : Chemical Burn?
teksmith 03-06-2008, 11:37 PM When Juliet first noticed the injury was a chemical burn, for some reason my first thoughts were about the powder stuff that is always around Jacob's shack. Of course the more obvious explaination is the Tempest gas, but I thought that stuff was highly toxic where even a tiny bit would kill you.
Also, I don't think Juliet knew about the gas flavored doomsday device when she treated Gooodwin so how did she know it was supposed to be a secret? Because he lied about it? Maybe, but then why did Goodwin keep it a secret?
Any thoughts?
Flotsam 03-07-2008, 03:50 AM Perhaps Goodwin was doing something with the chemicals he shouldn't oughta', or he didn't want to fess up to making a mistake on the job.
As for the powder around Jacob's cabin, I think it's simple volcanic ash. But that's just what I think. I've been wrong before. Once.

Goodwin said he burned himself at the power station on a transformer, right? But in
reality he burned himself at the power station with a chemical.
Kevonski 03-07-2008, 09:47 AM The chemicals needed to mix the gas itself would be caustic to some degree possibly, spill a little on the counter top and lean on it before cleaning up...
BuffyMars 03-07-2008, 11:34 AM I thought the gas at first, but if he was exposed to the gas, wouldn't he had died?
(4.8.15.16.23.42) 03-07-2008, 11:38 AM Maybe he was working with one component of the gas? Like, you have to mix certain things to create it and one of the ingredients came in contact with his skin?

That is what I would have thought. And what was he actually up to that he did not want anyone to know??
molly1977 03-07-2008, 11:36 PM The gas seems to kill when inhaled. I am at a loss as to what the chemical burn came from.
Maybe Goodwin worked on the side in a meth lab?

Good point. And why make a biohazardous material engineered for mass murder on an island inhabited (at that time, before the crash but after the big purge) by only their little Utopian community?

The gas is presumably made up of less dangerous chemicals. I think we can assume
the burn came from his working with those chemicals since he said the chemicals
were dangerous and that the burn happened at the power station. How much more clear
does it need to be?
As for how long it lasts, I read that it persists for about 3-4 weeks in the environment.

I think he could be a little more clear as he was lying about how he was burned at the power station. Maybe it didn't even happen at the power station. Maybe he has his own little chemical doomsday device stashed away that no one else knows about?
-calypso- 03-08-2008, 10:18 AM I think it's just a clue to tell us he worked at the tempest station...
and now i wonder where the guy was during the purge...are we supposed to believe him and his wife? Because i don't trust them! And how Goodwin's wife learned about his husband's affair with Juliet..i'm curious to know...
GOODWIN:Now a little less than a kilometer from here, he has me working with chemicals that could kill every man, woman and child on this island if I flip the wrong switch. Trust me, Ben has enough on his plate. The last thing he cares about is you and me.

Unless the Utopia was about to be invaded by a plane crash and then a freighter, and Ben knew it. This holds water if you buy into the theory he is also time travelling. The Economist supports this theory.
