View Full Version : Hurley ALWAYS wins
james_sawyer 03-07-2008, 12:55 AM Anyone notice how whenever someone plays a game against him, he wins?
Ping pong against James (I like calling him James ), horseshoes against James, horse against Jack in the FF, and if I'm not mistaken, he won the golf tournament too...
...or maybe not...I can't believe I don't remember...
Distress Signal 03-07-2008, 12:56 AM Hurley lost to Walt at backgammon, and owed him $23,000 I believe.
Electromagnetic Anomoly 03-07-2008, 12:56 AM And the lottery!
And possibly Connect Four at the hospital.
Eight 03-07-2008, 12:58 AM It's not that Hurley always wins but in keeping with the theme of OPPOSITES he feels "lucky" on the island while off it he felt "cursed."

Touche.
100%

So...that must have carried over then to when he gets off the island, am I right? I mean, I'm only basing this off the fact that he was dominating Jack at horse, without having missed a shot, but of course we don't know if Jack is any good whatsoever at basketball.
He definitely is feeling lucky, though. He even muttered the word at the end of tonight's episode.
Maalstrom Aran 03-07-2008, 01:13 AM Hurley can affect his own luck just by thinking posittively or negatively about the specific item. The numbers affecting his life (his choice to play the numbers) are what lead to his bad luck/landing on the island.
The only reason Walt wins at his game was that Walt was born with his powers, while Hurley received them by using the numbers.
Selene1212 03-07-2008, 01:49 AM Hurley is a gamer. ;)
lockesmithe 03-07-2008, 02:00 AM Forget Team Jack and Team Locke, sign me up for Team Hugo.

I'll get on board that train. I'm a gamer, too...but I don't think I could take Hugo in anything...maybe horse.....maybe......

Leaving the golf tourney aside cuz i can't remember the winner either (deodorant was the prize, but who won???)
Do Jack and James always lose? Who else has lost to Hurley? Walt beat Locke at backgammon too, right?
Winners/Losers on LOST. (I'm sure we have plenty of lists on this already.)
Tommy 03-07-2008, 02:14 AM Hurly lost libby.
Maalstrom Aran 03-07-2008, 02:20 AM Hurley has lost a lot of things. Seems like it happens when he's depressed or unsure of himself ....
and yah, Hurley does seem like a gamer. He's probably got some fat HDTV or something in his mansion.
hmd1975 03-07-2008, 02:34 AM Attitudes. I like it. Many times over, we've seen Losties with negative mind states resulting in poor/sad outcomes in life.
The opposite...? We've seen Jack thinking Sarah wouldn't walk (i'm certain there are more examples)...but did Desmond alter his mind state...alter the Future???
lockesmithe 03-07-2008, 02:48 AM Hurly lost libby. The nasty look that Libby gave Hurley behind his back after talking him off the cliff leads me to believe that this was a blessing, not a loss. I don't trust Libby.
AboutBunnies 03-07-2008, 03:05 AM I thought that Hurley's luck was an ongoing thing from the beginning...he's lucky but brings bad luck to everyone around him. Was it in season 1 when he insisted on crossing a bridge or something first -- the others assumed because of his weight he wouldn't make it, but he knew he'd be all right. He was just concerned for the guys w/ him.
-calypso- 03-07-2008, 08:37 AM He always wins when he's playing against Sawyer! I love their scenes together, very funny!
axpo23 03-07-2008, 09:19 AM Hurly lost libby.
:*( And he lost his mind...ie the psychiatric ward. I <3 Hurley and really hopes that he gets a good deal out of all the island madness. (although from what we've seen....prob not.)
LostOCD 03-07-2008, 11:33 AM Hurley is all about luck - good and bad. He had terrible luck in the past and it was because he believed he was cursed. Winning the lottery seems like good fortune, but it was at the expense of everybody around him. In S3 though, when Hurley starts the Dharma van, he turns his luck around using hope. Ever since then he has been kicking butt at any game he plays. Hurley's luck may play an important role in getting him off the island, I think.
kokobware 03-07-2008, 11:44 AM I think the electromagnetic currents in response to Hurley's aura impacted the flight of the horseshoes. This would explain... just kidding. Hurley's just got mad skillz.

I agree, I love their scenes together. It wouldn't be nearly as good if Sawyer won anything. I can't help missing Charlie when seeing Hurley now though. I still smile when I see him but feel a little melancholy as well.
Lea_Lost 03-07-2008, 12:00 PM it's not that Hurley wins everything, it's more like Sawyer loses every single time  Even Jack beat him in poker :21:
Hurley is not unbeatable. Walt kicked his arse in backgammon.
Parrot 03-07-2008, 03:36 PM My take on this is a little different. People judge others by appearances. The writers have given Hurley a gift of athleticism, which is not "expected" for someone who is overweight. I like that! Winning in ping pong was cool, and winning against Jack in basketball was awesome!
BlitzwingGibbon 03-07-2008, 06:48 PM I reckon he has whatever power it is that allows someone to be in tune with the island be able to harness its powers when they really concentrate on something.
Its like an elite club that only he and Walt, Ben and Locke are in so far.
Sounds daft the more I think about it though.
snomad 03-07-2008, 07:02 PM Maybe Jacob just wants to play a game of basketball?
switzer 03-07-2008, 07:10 PM Team Hugo...count me in...DUDE
