In the establishing shot of the freighter that comes right after the Jin/Bernard fishing scene, what does it say on the side of the frieghter? "Lakama" or something?

It looked to me as if it said, "Karina" or "kahana". We be needing a screencap methinks.

From Lostpedia (http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Kahana):

"Kahana," according to a Hawaiian Dictionary, means "n. Cutting, drawing of a line; turning point. Cf. kaha 1, 3. Eia maʻaneʻi ke kahana alanui e iho ai i kahakai, here's the turn of the road to go down to the beach." There are many places in the Hawaiian islands called "Kahana," and "Kahana" is also a proper name for men or women. In addition, if spelled "ka hana", this could mean "the work" in the context of a larger sentence.

Additionally, "Kahana" is the aramaic form of the word Cohen in Hebrew, which means Priest but also Leader. All Jewish priests came from the family of Levi, who was the son of Jacob.

Thanks allergygal, some interesting stuff in that definition. I really like the "turning point" part. In many ways the frieghter is the turning point. The unexpected Jacob reference is awesome too.

That connects Jacob to Widmore since it's his boat. Interesting.

drawing of a line? hmmmmm sounds like it's in the exact and only location it can be placed.

I've always been amused by the freighter, it looks horrendous....if i had been Sayid i would asked by now what kind of budget this rescue is on

I suppose we now should expect the Losties to plot the take-over of this ship.I assume this is how they eventually escape the island. If true, this could make a very interesting "plot" line for next season.

From the LostPedia enhanced Constant transcript...

The freighter is actually a 150-foot supply ship.
Its real name is the Kahala.

Act Three

(Sayid surveys the ship)
These scenes were filmed
a few miles off the Oahu coast.
The ship docked at Barbers Point
just west of Pearl Harbor.
This ship used to transport supplies
to islands and science research stations
within the Hawaiian Archipelago.

That being said, it does look like there would be another name under Kahana. And to me, the first letters look like BL. And I immediately jump to Black Rock. I know it's silly, but it would be funny.

To be honest, when I heard the term "freighter" I imagined a boat much bigger than the one that we are seeing now. I guess in my mind I was actually picturing a tanker. In any case, it seems apparent that this boat isn't necessarily there for a rescue mission because it seems ill-quipped to handle carrying too many survivors - especially if there was a remote chance that the majority of a plane full of 300+ people managed to survive.
