Thomas Mittelwerk claimed to work for Hanso Industries but in reality he was searching for an island.... I remember the 70part video in which he sent a ship and counselled some researchers that they will release a virus that will kill 30 percent of the inhabitants. More or less and the mission has failed. Somehow I get the impression that Ben vs. Widmore is the same game: Probably Widmore and Ben are/were partners. But while Ben is stuck on the island Widmore doesn't know the exact location and tries everything to get this info. this explains his interest for the ledger and the freighter. Remember the Hanso-video? "The precise location of the island is only known by myself and the DeGroots" In the end we learned that Alvar Hanso was kept prisoner but had contacts to the outside world to help Rachel Blake to reveal that his former partner Mittelwerk misused the power of his company to develop a deadly virus..... The story in 2006 made me think that the it will influence our island storyline somehow. Let's wait and see.
