Maybee its not that woman cant give birth and live on the island. Maybee it has something to do with bens father and bens sperm. Maybee Juliet was sent here by Ben to fix his problem so he can have children to follow him?

i think it would be possible that he wants Juliet for 2 reasons...to fix the pregnant woman problem and to be his wife and have kids. i think it is very likely that he wants to have children and to carry on his name

I see it as a punishment Ben has to endure, reliving a terrible moment in his life, I know the mothers die at a different time in relation to Bens moms death, and if he wasn't so sociopathic he would feel bad about them dying.

I was thinking it has more to do with the electromagnetic qualities on the island rather than Ben himself. His tentacles are far reaching, but not that far reaching.

Noooo, I want more epic Millenia-spanning Island mythology! I don't want everything to be something caused in the last 30 years.

Poor Ben... no wonder the ladies don't like him! ;)

Okay, given the thread, this isn't surprising, but I totally read that word as testicles. Which makes your post hilarious.

I don't think it has anything to do with Ben - there's no evidence of babies pre-Ben (i.e. with Dharma), either. For the mothers to die only if they conceive on-island sounds like it has something to do with genetic mutation of sex cells - I like the exposure-to-radiation theory.

It could be that all women get so freaked out when they meet Ben, they can't deliver babies anymore in close proximity to him. Only if they get off the island they will feel more safe again.

Yeah, people lived on the island for millenia before Ben got there. Ben has a connection with the island, and just like Locke unconsciously caused his father to show up, Ben is unconsciously causing all the women's bodies to attack their unborn babies, just before the point when Ben's mother prematurely went into labor and died giving birth to him.

Dude, your avatar seriously freaks me out.

It is kinda interesting. No one gets born on the island, yet no one dies either... unless of unnatural causes (exept for MiKail).

So Ben has some bad seed, so to speak? It would follow along with the cult mentality of the others...only letting the leader pro-create.....ugh, I think I'm gonna puke.

If we go with the theory of the island forcing people to come to terms with something in their past and/or wanting specific people there for some reason could we then assume that maybe the woman keep dying because the unborn babies have no past that will include anything of the outside world (where as Claire's baby has the daddy issues that are sure to eventually pop up) and therefore have nothing with which to make them "worthy" of the island and it's powers?

Very interesting, I hadn't thought of that, I still think it's a punishment for Ben but this is making me question that.

Wow, I really dig this. I feel like I'm in an episode of "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey."

This sounds like you have to exist outside the island before you can exist on it?

On a side note, what did the psychic tell Claire: that she had to get on Flight 815 or not get on? Either way, maybe he knew something about the island and children?

I agree with you HordingHurley,...the island is causing a time-shift, one that precludes babies from being born, unless they had a past.

In other words, the babies cannot survive on island, because they were conceived on island.

If the babies had been conceived off island, they have a past to return to,..a constant.

The island's anomaly would be quite a coup if Widmore, or anybody in the outside world, could harness, and control it.

They could, in effect, become all-knowing,..powerful beyond all others, all knowledge would be passed onto the holder of such power. They would have harnessed the true Heisenberg Engine,...a pretty good reason for Widmore to go to 'any' lengths to get it.

I think this is possibility Ben being punished by the island. Ben's Mom died in childbirth and I think that this is the island punishing or perhaps "testing Ben's faith" like Abraham and Jacob in the bible. I don't take credit for this theory but I like it.
