View Full Version : Locke's Future
rindjosh 03-26-2008, 03:35 AM What do you think the Island has in store for Locke this season? I miss talking about Locke.
Maybe in the end he will call Ben's bluff (if he's bluffing) and be the savior. What do you think?
smack632 03-26-2008, 02:24 PM I bet that Locke if instrumental in having Ben and the rest of the Oceanic Six removed from the island. With Jack and Ben out of the way, he can cement his leadership position. Locke will become the new pharoah.
MysteryFan 03-27-2008, 03:10 PM I think Ben is Locke's replacement for his father-manipulator. We saw Locke as a tough guy on the island, quirky, enigmatic, giving counseling sessions to Charlie and Claire and Boone and . . . He seemed like a real leader. But since he's met Ben, it's like seeing the Locke from the FBs: he is so gullible and intimidated by Ben, I'm waiting for him to offer to give up his other kidney. Every time Locke seems to get his courage back and stand up to Ben, he backs down again. (Where's Helen when we need her?)
tierneygreen 03-31-2008, 04:11 PM Yeah, they've made Locke Ben's bitch, and it annoys me every time.
I have a theory that Locke represents rabid, over-analytical fans (like me), and Ben represents TPTB, and its all just one big joke they are playing on us. We want answers from people we think have them, but the answers are always either cryptic, lead to more questions, or are just a flat out denial of the information we seek. Because it's all just BS, like the aforementioned Verbal Kent analogy.
I go back to Locke's inquiry about Smokey. Ben promises to tell him whatever he wants to know about the island in exchange for not being executed. Locke asks, "What is the monster?" Queue Lost fans salivating over any shred of information on the show's longest-running mystery. Ben's response, "I don't know." Why even include that exchange in the dialogue if its not a camouflaged middle finger from the writers to the fans.
Surferdervish 03-31-2008, 04:42 PM It's all about daddy issues. The stuff he's playing out with Ben is the same stuff he played out with Cooper off the island. I think if he'd killed Cooper himself, the cycle would have stopped. Now he's doomed to continue the same stuff with Ben (and probably Jacob) until he figures it out and...doesn't anymore.
TPTB have said over and over that LOST island is a metaphor for the characters' lives-- they're all lost in their lives, and the story is about how they find their way. Locke will get there, but maybe not until the final season. Until then, we'll have to suffer more of his annoying cycle of approval-seeking and rejection-getting...til he finally becomes his own man.
Keepin' my fingers crossed for my man Locke. Go Team Individuation!
rindjosh 04-05-2008, 02:15 PM I just can't help thinking Locke is the key to everything...
Don't you think he is "special" and will snap out of his funk and be the savior of the Island?
MysteryFan 04-05-2008, 03:38 PM Locke is special. We knew from the 4th episode Walkabout what made him so special. The way he mentored Boone and Charlie and discussed deeper truths with Jack . . . he was fascinating. He loved the Island that both restored him and proved that nobody could 'tell him what he can't do'. Then he discovered the hatch, and he started looking for answers. Instead of believing in the destiny that brought him to the Island, he began doing things to please the Island, looking for whatever he couldn't get from his father. When will he resolve that problem and get past it so he can once again be the cool Locke we first knew?
TheFrozenDonkeyWheel 04-05-2008, 10:58 PM I have a feeling Locke is going to bite off more than he can chew in terms of forced leadership. He will be abandoned by the few Losties he's got with him. He'll go into some sort of depressed confusion and then will be helped to a path of guidance and some sort of "island redemption" through Alpert and the Temple Others.
texgeekboy 04-06-2008, 01:32 AM I believe that Locke is 'The Economist', and is in a major struggle with Ben in the flash forwards.
jedimasterchief9 04-09-2008, 09:29 PM I think Locke will become more like a leader, more Locke from season 1 in the next few episodes, because he won't listen to Ben anymore. We saw once that Locke has rules, and next time Ben breaks them, I think Locke will kill him. Locke will lead his team against the people from the boat.
TheElectricGlidingWarrior 04-20-2008, 11:21 AM I suspect Locke is more important than we realise at this time. Although there have been many hints and references to Locke having a special relationship with the Island, I think even more about Locke's role may be revealed in the future.
The reason for my suspicions is that during Par Avion (Season 3 Episode 12) Mikhail says:
"The man who brought me here, who brought all of my people here, he is a magnificent man."
I assume we are supposed to believe this "magnificent man" is Jacob, but check out the way Mikhail looks at Lock when he says "the man who brought me here" and "HE is a magnificent man."

Me too, EGWarrior, at this point I suspect that Ben needs Locke as much as Locke needs Ben. Ben has knowledge about the island; however I believe Locke now has a stronger link to it...through Jacob maybe.
Oh, and welcome to the Fuselage!
