I believe that every date given on Lost is important. So once I found out that Jack's newspaper was dated August 30,2007 , I knew the date was important.

August 30 is the International Day of the Disappeared. An annual commemoration day created to draw attention to the fate of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives and/or legl represenatives.

I thought this sounded alot like what is going on with Lost. All these people are stuck on an island they can not leave.Their loved ones have no idea where they are. They think the Oceanic passengers are dead. The Oceanic 6 have kept up a lie that has kept their friends stuck on the island.

There was actually an event associated with the day that happened in 2007. In the Philippines hundreds of people protested against the government to mark International Day of the Disappeared.

Here is the Wikipedia Article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Day_of_the_Disappeared

There weren't alot of other events that stuck out for the date. If you'd like to see other events for August 30, to see if you can make another Lost connection you can check out the events here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_30

The main things that stuck out to me were:

1791 The HMS Pandora sank after running aground on a reef the previous day.

1835 Melbourne, Australia founded

I think the purpose of selecting this particular day was because of the International Day of the Disappeared. Otherwise I think they would have chosen the actual day (or day after) the Yankees and Red Sox game.

The game was played on August 30.
The date of the news article wasn't shown (http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg162/getlostpodcast/4x10/newspaper.jpg), but with all the comments, etc, it was likely the next day. There's a mention of "last night's" Mariners-Indians game so I'm sure baseball fans can pinpoint it, if need be.

Don't know how or if this affects your theory, I'm just sayin'...

I just realized something.

The newspaper date in this episode is August 31, 2007. This is after the newspaper date from Through The Looking Glass, April 5, 2007.

Shouldn't the flash-forward in this episode have happened before the flash-forward in Through The Looking Glass?

This leads me to believe that the dates are wrong, perhaps in both episodes.

Comments?

And you missed this, I qoute Hurley, "Can't believe you're just giving him Australia. Australia's the key to the whole game." cut and pasted directly from lostpedia.

Both newspapers are apocryphal. The TTLG article seems to have two different spellings for the deceased.

The SNBH page includes a boxscore for the Angels beating the Astros 8 to 4... a game that was played in June of 2007, not August. We get two of our numbers, plus a couple of really good names - Angels and Astros? Faith and Science?

Speaking of names, Jack comments "A-Rod" after reading the article, but A-Rod had nothing to do with that victory and was pretty much a non-factor for the whole series, a solo homer excepting. So why does he say "A-Rod"? Is it an oblique reference to DriveShaft, foreshadowing Charlie's message from Hurley?

Methinks the names are more important than the dates. Trying to establish a canonical timeline is likely futile.

Michael: Look, I get it, right? It's the watch. Mine broke and I found this in the wreckage, and I figured, "Hey, why let a twenty-thousand dollar watch go to waste?" - which is ridiculous, since time doesn't matter on a damn island!

Is there any relevance to the email address listed directly below the article? I can't make out if it's a .com address or .au or something else.

If the game was played on 8/30, then the paper is 8/31.

Which is too screwy for TTLG's paper.

The date is very important because, a story about a late August sweep by the Yankees over the Sox, in a Los Angeles newspaper, means that there is a tight AL East race going on, and loosing to the Yanks is never a good thing, but with the playoffs only weeks away, these games become HUGE.

The point of showing the newspaper was to let attentive viewers know that the events in this episode take place AFTER TTLG.

I agree Kevn. Too much unravling to put back together if such is the case..however, the paper was important bec ause they went out of their way to show it to us. First jack looking at it, commenting A-rod, then when he put it down, the camera lingered. A totally useless scene if not to mean something. But what?

Unless time in the real world has begun moving backwards...and I know I'll regret having mentioned that.
