If he needed a third item, I'd agree it's the comic about a mysterious hidden land.
Maybe he should have just stopped with two items though.

I felt a huge amount of grief and pity for Locke. He was rejected from the very beginning, by his own family. The rest of his life, at every turn, he experiences rejection.

It's not until he arrives on the island that he experiences any sort of acceptance or belonging.
